Pretty much the unanimous pick to finish dead last in the Valley beats us at home.
I think that pretty much says all that needs to be said. There is simply no excuse for that to happen, on a variety of levels, and especially so in women's basketball.

Seventeen turnovers!! There should not be that many in the entire game! Just one bad decision after another. No, not bad, terrible. Jessie is clearly in the dog house (bad practice habits according to coach's comments in the post-game), when Alicia Sanchez is even running the point. Evansville pretty much had their way on offense. Our defense was poor, we hit the ten-foul mark with 8:23 remaining in the half, and they shot 48% for the half. After Haleigh goes out with two fouls and us leading 17-11, the offense and very quickly thereafter, the lead (Evansville goes on a 15-0 run), disappears.
In the second half we played much better (admittedly, a pretty low barrier). We attacked the basket and got some interior offense going. Jazimen was a beast. We tied the game at 55 at the 9:40 mark and trailed 64-66 with 2:49 remaining. Then we missed three contested shots in the paint with just under two to play and with the same score. After that, the questionable decisions and turnovers reared their heads. The awful first half was too much to overcome.
Southern Illinois comes to town on Sunday, and they are clearly the worst team in the league. It should be "educational."

Apparently Haleigh replaced Jessica in Jody's doghouse during the game. Haleigh went out of the game at the 5 minute mark with the Shocks trailing 62-65.
I figured Jody just wanted to give Haleigh a rest until the under 4:00 minute timeout. Nope. She elected to finish out the game with her best and most experienced player sitting at her side with the exception of a few seconds after the outcome was settled.
As flyingMoose said the 1st half was about as bad as a team can play.
The basketball IQ on this team, on a scale of 1 to 10, is about a 2.
Many times the offense was about as stagnant as it could be with the point guard dribbling at the top of the key and the other 4 players pretty much stationary.
Can the Shocks get this turned around? Yes, it's possible.
Have the Shocks given any indication or reason to believe that they will get things turned around? No. If they don't they are looking at about an 8th place finish.
goShockers.com laughingly reported that the game was played "in front of a New Year's Eve crowd of 1,547". That may have been the paid attendance but the game was played in front of a crowd of about 347. That could dwindle even further if the Shocks continue to play this poorly.

When our athleticism gets us some easy baskets (a major part of our second half rally), we do okay, but if we have to win in the half-court, we're hurting - points that have been made before. We struggled with the post jumping out on the guard on the high-ball screens. We struggled some when Evansville used their full court 1-3-1 zone press. And much of the time, we just struggled.

At tiimes the kids seem to be tied in knots trying to think their way through a possession or a situation. While it is important to be able to play smart basketball that needs to be done instinctually and not mechanically. At other times they seem totally oblivious to the situation or what the opponent is doing or might do.
There were many bad decisions and mental lapses by the Shocks but the play that about had me ready to be comitted was when Jessica made a nice play to deflect the ball into the back court as the shot clock was running down for Evansville. In the ensuing scramble for the ball Breanna commits a foul 80 feet from the Evansville basket with 1 second remaining on the shot clock. Granted Breanna was hustling, but you have to understand the game situation and react accordingly.

I'm having difficulty figuring out what the women Shox are trying to do. One player dribbles for 20 seconds, players stand around, no off ball screens or cuts to the hoop. On defense, I've never seen a team get beat by back-door cuts as much as the Shox. Of course we can all figure it out from our blog posts :-) We all want this team to win. A young team is an excuse; start executing and play with incredible intensity; the wins will come!
