  • Shocks 64 - Santa Clara 49

The Shocks managed to turn a 30-point blowout into a 15 point win against a winless Santa Clara team.

The Shocks commanded a 37-20 lead at the half behind some terrific perimeter shooter lead by Haleigh and Morgan.

It took Santa Clara about 3.5 minutes to score 13 unanswered points to open the second half and reduce the lead to 4. Santa Clara pulled with 3 with about 15 minutes remaining in the game.

From that point the Shocks stretched the lead back to 20 over the next 12 minutes behind the play of Haleigh, Morgan, Jessica and Heather.

I'm not really sure what Jody was trying to accomplish with the starting line up of Chynna, Michelle, Jazimen, Heather and Breanna. This group started both halves but only scored 17 points. The "bench" contributed 47 points. Not sure if Jody was trying to combat the size and strength of SC's Lena Gipson or if she had some other reason for this lineup, but they were offensively challenged to say the least.

BreAnna, after playing very well at the point in the loss to Wyoming, had a very poor night with 2 assists to 8 turnovers. Jessica, OTOH, was sharp at the point handing out 7 assists to 2 turnovers. Overall, the teams 16 assists to 17 turnovers wasn't bad, but we had 11 assists and only 5 turnovers at the half.

Haleigh had a terrific game scoring 21 points on 7-9 from the field and 4-5 from the line. She had 1 assist, 1 turnover and 3 steals in 24 minutes off the bench.

Morgan also had a good game off the bench scoring 16 points on 6-13 from the field and 1-2 from the line. Morgan also led the Shocks with 11 rebounds and chipped in 2 blocked shots. Unfortunately, she did not get a lot of help on the boards as the Shocks were outrebounded 36-26 with Lena Gipson leading the way for SC with 12 boards.

In addition to her solid floor game Jessica contributed 8 points.

Still not getting much production from our interior players. Chynna, Michelle, Jazimen, Shannika and Kelsey combined for 8 points and 9 rebounds.

    Krystle still sidelined.

I did not care for the starting lineup Jody put on the court tonight. One of the lineups I did like had Jessica, BreAnna, and Haleigh on the court together.

I'm guessing the starting lineups had more to do with sending a message to certain players about them not doing what Jody wanting them to in past games or practices than with putting our best lineup on the floor.

In the case of Haleigh, at least, her foul problems at home have been a major problem, especially with her picking up stupid ones early. Coming off the bench she had 0 fouls this game. Maybe a coincidence, but it may be that she doesn't get as over-excited when coming off the bench and plays more within herself.

That thought crossed my mind also and may very well be the case. I did not hear either the pre-game or post-game comments from Jody so I don't know if she said anything about this or not. I tried to stay in the arena and listen to Jody's post game comments by I simply can not hear what is being said. (I blame it on the poor accoustics but maybe it is just me --
I won't be trying that again.)

Possible, we will see what happens as the year progresses. One thing for sure is that we need Haleigh on the floor as much as possible if we are going to be successful.

At the end of the day, who started didn't determine who got the most playing time. Jessie had the most minutes of any player with 28, Morgan was second with 25, and Haleigh was tied for third with 24 (along with Breanna and Heather).

Who started had a tremendous amount to do with a major momentum shift at the beginning of the second half.

You can get away with that against a Santa Clara. You may or may not regain the momentum against better quality opponents.
