  • Lady Shocks at Evansville

The Shocks play Evansville a DH beginning at noon on Saturday. The Shocks are now 4-8 in conference and Evansville are 5-9. Winning at least two this weekend would be good for the standings and better for any possible tiebreaker. Evansville has the possibility of rain later today and tonight, but it is supposed to be sunny tomorrow.

Shocks drop game 1 to Evansville by a 3-1 score.

Breezy started and allowed all 3 Evansville runs in 2.1 innings.

Kasha pitched the final 3.2 allowing only 1 hit.

Shocks simply could not get much going offesnively, although Evansville only out-hit the Shocks 6 to 5.

Why are they not starting Kasha? She's been well the last few times out. Surely she's starting the 2nd game

You woul think, but not so.

          Katie starts game 2.

Shocks score 1 in the 1st, but Katie gives up 2 in the second.

Kasha relieves Katie with 2 outs in the second. She has pitched 2.1 innings allowing only 1 hit and not runs.

Shocks still trail 2-1 going into the bottom of the 5th.

Shocks score 3 in the top of the 7th to take a 4-2 lead.

Kasha can't hold it as she gives up her 1st two runs of the day.

Tied 4-4 as they head to extra innings.

Shocks score 3 in the 8th and Kasha makes it stand up this time as Shockers win Game 2 by a 7-4 score.

Based on Wednesday in Springfield and today, it appears we have a new pitching strategy for DHs.

Knowing what you can get out of Kasha, but having little idea from day to day what you can get out of anyone else on the staff, Pooch seems to have chosen to let the non-Kashas start and go as far as they can, and then bring in KK. I think it has a lot of merit, given the circumstances. The trick is knowing when to make the change.

But I do assume Kasha will get the start tomorrow. :)

BTW, the box score says Kasha's two runs in the seventh of the second game were unearned.

You still have to score for that to work FM. That strategy might have cost us the 1st game

Possibly, but I am actually encouraged by the recent offense, despite the single run in the first game.

It is definitely an atypical approach. More typical is what Creighton does with Tara Oltman and the nTs: their coach gives her the first game and brings her in as soon as he has to in the second game.

Apparently, the Shocks 1B (I think Jamie Hull) dropped a foul ball that would have been the 2nd out of the inning. Kasha had given uo a lead off single. That batter, with new life then double to put runners at 2nd and 3rd, followed by a two-run, game tying single. The player that singled in the tying runs advanced to second on the throw to the plate. Kasha then got the last two outs to send the game into extras.

Breezy started and was relieved by Kasha after giving up a lead-off single in the bottom of the 4th with Evansville leading 2-1.

Kasha got out of the inning unscathed and the Shocks tied the game at 2 in the top of the 5th.

Unfortunately, Evansville scored in the bottom of the 7th to pull out a 3-2 win and to win the series 2-1. Not a good weekend for the Shocks.

Okay, time for the will-we-make-the-tournament check.

After today's games, the Shocks are in eighth place at 5-10 and Bradley is ninth at 5-11.

The remaining series for the Shocks are v Southern Illinois (currently first), v Bradley and at Indiana State (currently tenth at 2-14).

The remaining conference games for Bradley are a single at Northern Iowa on Tuesday, and series v Creighton (currently fourth), at Wichita State and v Illinois State (currently second).

Only a complete and utter collapse will keep us out of the tournament.
