  • Lady Shocks @ Missouri State

The Shocks begin a tough stretch where they play 5 of their next 7 games on the road beginning with MSU on Saturday afternoon 2:05

The Shocks follow up next Thursday and Saturday against Evansville and SIU on the road before returning home to face 3rd place Drake and league co-leader Creighton. Then it is back on the road for games against co-leader Illinois State and Indiana State.

Considering our recent history the road has not been kind to the Lady Shocks. However, we did pick up a nice win at Bradley at the end of last year and a nice win at Kent State earlier this year under HCJA.

I would consider a 3-4 record from this stretch of games to be a very good result. Evansville, SIU and Drake may be our best chances for wins, although the game at Indiana State and, to a lesser extent, the game at MSU may be winnable.

The MSU game shapes up to be MSU's league-leading scoring offense (76.7 PPG) against the Shocks 3rd in the league scoring defense (61.9 PPG). By contrast MSU has given up 71.2 PPG and the Shocks have scored 61.9 PPG (the same as they have allowed).

The key will probably be how the Shocks fare against MSU's 2 super-sophs, Casey Garrison and Jaleshia Roberson. Garrison, a 6'0" guard averages 18.9 PPG, 7.8 RPG and 5.9 APG. Garrison shoots 51% from the field and 83% from the line. IMO, she is the best all-around player in the league. Roberson, a 5'9" guard averages 14.1 PPG and takes two-thirds (116/173) of her shots from behind the arc.

As a team MSU shoots 43.7% from the field, including 36.3% of their treys, and 73.3% from the line. By comparison the Shocks shoot 38.9% from the field (28.6% from behind the arc) and 68.5% from the line.

I suspect Haleigh will have the primary defensive responsibility on Garrison and Sheena on Roberson. I think Sheena can definitely slow Roberson down. Not to take anything away from Haleigh, but Garrison is likely to get hers. Haleigh just needs to make sure she doesn't go ballistic on us. Also, Shocks might mix up the defenses as they have had some success with their zone in recent games.

The MSU game is not one I would expect the Shocks to win, but they play the games for a reason. An upset win in Springfield would be a very big win for this young team.

Shocks with a nice effort in Springfield. Shocks were down by as much as 13 in the 1st half and tralied by 8 at half time. Morgan Boyd hit a trey with about 10 seconds left to put the Shocks up 80-78. But Casey Garrison drove to the basket for a tying layup with 3 seconds left.

    Going to OT at 80-80.

Shocks win 92-85 in OT. Sounds like they had more gas left in the tank in OT.

      MSU announcers are pretty weak.

      Big win for the Shocks.

If we finish .500 or better in the league, Jody should be Coach of the Year.

Shocks jumped out to an 88-80 lead in OT. But a turnover by Marisah and a Casey Garrison basket made 88-82.

Marisah missed the front end of a 1 & 1 with about 1 minute left.

Jaleshia Roberson hit a trey to make it 88-85.

Marisah was fouled and again missed the front end of a 1 & 1.

Fortunately, MSU missed and Haleigh was fouled. Haleigh drained 2 free throws to pretty much put the game in the deep freeze at 90-85.

Marisah made a break-away layup at the buzzer for the final margin.

Shocks shot 57.8% from the field for the game.

          :good:

            Good for Jody.

These girls can beat a lot of teams.....and they can lose to anyone. Some consistency would be nice sometime, say, this lifetime?

We have been consistently bad on the road. 2-33 over the last 3 years. We already have 2 road wins this year including today's win in what is probably the toughest environment for Women's hoops in the Valley. 4,859 in attendance today. So great job by this young team to be able to handle that today.

I never would have predicted that the Shocks would win a shoot-out over the Lady Bears but that is pretty much what they did.

I thought we would have to play great D and hold Casey Garrison and Jaleshia Roberson in check. That did not happen Roberson scored 23 and Garrison scored 21 (although she took 23 shots to get there).

The Shocks apparently played pretty good team ball with an outstanding 26 assists on 37 baskets. They also shot lights out. The Shocks shot 57.8% from the field including 9-16 treys for 56.3%. In the second half and OT the Shocks shot 22-32 (68.75%) from the field and were 7-10 from behind the arc. My guess is by far and away their best shooting game of the year.

Great balance for the Shocks with 5 players in double figures and a 6th with 8 points.

Chynna led the way with 20 points on 9-12 shooting.

Haleigh had 18 but was only 5-15 from the field. Haleigh was 6-8 from the line including two big free throws to ice the game late in OT. Haleigh also had 4 steals and a couple of blocked shots.

Jessica scored 16 on 7-12 shooting (2-4 on treys). She also had 7 assists.

Morgan chipped in 15 on 6-9 from the field including 3-3 from behind the arc. Perhaps Morgan's most efficient game of the year.

Jazimen was 6-7 from the field for 13 points and led the Shocks in rebounding with 7.

              Sheena chipped in 8 points.

Marisah's only shot was a layup at the very end of OT after the game was pretty much over. However, she had 13 assists to only 4 turnovers while playing 44 minutes of an up and down game.

Just a very, very nice performance and win for the Lady Shocks.

And how about the combined line for the three freshman -- Chynna, Jessica and Jazimen:

              49 points on 22-31 (71%) from the field, 15 rebounds, 9 assists, 6 turnovers, 3 blocks and 2 steals.

              I like it.

Agreed. On what was a very disappointing day for the men's team, the ladies shined through and gave us fans something to crack a smile about at least. Kudos to the girls on a hard-fought win on the road in what I've been told is the toughest venue in the Valley.

I look forward to the day when the Shocker women and the Lady Bears are battling it out for supremacy in the Valley and the game can warrant some national TV exposure on ESPNU or Fox. It's always been a fun rivalry back to the days of Jackie and Daryl. Hopefully those days are coming sooner than later.
