The Shocks begin a tough stretch where they play 5 of their next 7 games on the road beginning with MSU on Saturday afternoon 2:05
The Shocks follow up next Thursday and Saturday against Evansville and SIU on the road before returning home to face 3rd place Drake and league co-leader Creighton. Then it is back on the road for games against co-leader Illinois State and Indiana State.
Considering our recent history the road has not been kind to the Lady Shocks. However, we did pick up a nice win at Bradley at the end of last year and a nice win at Kent State earlier this year under HCJA.
I would consider a 3-4 record from this stretch of games to be a very good result. Evansville, SIU and Drake may be our best chances for wins, although the game at Indiana State and, to a lesser extent, the game at MSU may be winnable.
The MSU game shapes up to be MSU's league-leading scoring offense (76.7 PPG) against the Shocks 3rd in the league scoring defense (61.9 PPG). By contrast MSU has given up 71.2 PPG and the Shocks have scored 61.9 PPG (the same as they have allowed).
The key will probably be how the Shocks fare against MSU's 2 super-sophs, Casey Garrison and Jaleshia Roberson. Garrison, a 6'0" guard averages 18.9 PPG, 7.8 RPG and 5.9 APG. Garrison shoots 51% from the field and 83% from the line. IMO, she is the best all-around player in the league. Roberson, a 5'9" guard averages 14.1 PPG and takes two-thirds (116/173) of her shots from behind the arc.
As a team MSU shoots 43.7% from the field, including 36.3% of their treys, and 73.3% from the line. By comparison the Shocks shoot 38.9% from the field (28.6% from behind the arc) and 68.5% from the line.
I suspect Haleigh will have the primary defensive responsibility on Garrison and Sheena on Roberson. I think Sheena can definitely slow Roberson down. Not to take anything away from Haleigh, but Garrison is likely to get hers. Haleigh just needs to make sure she doesn't go ballistic on us. Also, Shocks might mix up the defenses as they have had some success with their zone in recent games.
The MSU game is not one I would expect the Shocks to win, but they play the games for a reason. An upset win in Springfield would be a very big win for this young team.
