If you build it they will come? HCJA and staff appear on their way to building a competitive MVC program that could actually contend for an MVC Championship in the next year or two.
Will Shocker fans start to support the women's program in greater numbers? Will they even notice?
Volleyball has the advantage of not having football at WSU. The women's basketball seems to have to compete with the men's team for attention, although there is no reason not to support both programs.
The Shocks had "paid" attendance of 1,442 for UNI and 1,628 for Bradley although actual attendance was no doubt short of those numbers.
By comparison MSU drew 4,788 and 3,240 for UNI and Bradley, respectively. Which is 2.6 times what the Shocks are drawing. Granted MSU has a much better women's basketball tradition and historically have supported their women's basketball team very well. Nevertheless, they are also in rebuilding mode and at this point have an identical record to the Shocks.
While the support for the Lady Shocks does seem to be growing some we are still well short of where we need to be. I'm not sure we will ever be able to match MSU's support and passion for their Lady Bears, but I'm hopeful we can perhaps start to pull in crowds of closer to 3,000 as we go forward.
Plenty of room on the bandwagon and there are great seats available for season ticket buyers (and they are cheap). This team plays an entertaining brand of basketball with hard-nosed, in your face defense and they can really get up and down the floor. They are inexperienced and will make you scratch your heads at times, but they will just as often make you say Wow (like Jessica D's performance vs Bradley).
Not sure how well we will do this year, but so far things are definitely looking up. A shot at participating in the NCAA 1st round game at Intrust Arena next year is not out of the question. A surge in fan support would go a long way to achieving that goal.
I urge all Shocker fans to get out to as many games as possible.
