Hey guys, just checking in. I need to do so more often. But I thought this would be an interesting topic.

Which one of the eight new recruits this season has the highest ceiling? There's so many different ways you can take the question, it's a hard one to answer. But I thought I would give my take on each one and see what you guys thought.

    Morgan Boyd
It's a close call between her and Jessy for who has the best scoring ability. I've teased the coaches to tell her the mid-range is where she needs to be. But you can tell she is a shooter, it's just her shooting percentage from beyond the arc (18% on 40 attempts) doesn't show it. But when she drives and pulls up for the 12-15-foot jumper, she is deadly. I think she will learn. She is already one of the team's top offensive threats, and I expect her to develop into a more consistent scorer by her senior season next year. She's an alright defender, so she's going to be one of the better players in the future.

    Jessica Diamond
She is a rarity at this level, simply for the fact that she can consistently create her shot and has shown the ability to knock down that patented mid-range jump shot. She's only going to get better at it. Oh yeah, and she's only a freshman. It will be interesting to see if HCJA reigns her in next season without Marisah to run point, or if she will set her loose. If she does, then Diamond will be a top scorer on this team for the next three years. She needs to work on her defense and vision as a point guard, but still a solid player.

    Jazimen Gordon
How can this not be the player everyone is most excited to see develop. Early on I wasn't sure if she would find a place in the rotation by conference play. Now, I'm wondering how HCJA will find enough minutes for her. Her development has been rapid and in every phase of her game. I would say she's the best post defender, technically, but her only weakness now is her strength. But she has unworldly athleticism and has used it to create space for most of her shots. She's started to become a little more aggressive attacking the basket and looking for that little jump shot. Right now, she's the best post player on the team and she has the highest potential of anyone. Really excited to see where she goes from here on out.

    Sheena Johnson
She is the type of player that might go a little unappreciated by fans or people that just look at the box scores. Her impact on a game goes far beyond numbers in the box score. She has such a strong core that she wears down her defensive target and can handle much larger players. HCJA loves her and has always called her the most consistent player so far this season. She's the perimeter lock-down defender and has shown an ability to knock down that little jumper coming off the screen. She won't have to contribute much on offense, as her worth comes on the defensive end.

    Dannah Kemp
Kemp has been lost a little bit in the shuffle the past few games. I'm not sure she will see major minutes in conference play, as her defense has to improve to be out there. She has a nice stroke, but it hasn't been falling much this season (26% on 43 three-ball attempts). She's a three-point specialist, so if she can start to catch fire in games she will start to work her way into the rotation. She's a junior, so she will add nice depth this year and next season.

    Michelle Price
Until last night, I wasn't sure if Price would see major minutes again for the rest of the season. She had played sparingly and hadn't produced much. HCJA said she needed to harness her athletic ability and control it. She's not as athletic as Gordon, but she has a much better frame and should be a sturdy post player in the coming years. She's only a freshman, so she has a lot of time to grow and develop. She showed she can be a steady rebounder, but she'll have to work to find a go-to post move to be effective on offense.

    Alicia Sanchez
Sanchez hasn't been with the team for awhile now, but I am fairly certain she is still on. From what I have heard from coaches, etc., she will probably be available toward the end of MVC play and the tournament. Not sure if they will burn a year on her, or if she could possibly be red-shirted since she is a junior. But from what I've heard, she's a taller version of Kemp aka a three-point specialist.

    Chynna Turner
By far, Turner has the most developed offensive game of any of the posts. She is deceptively fast in her movements and has developed a nifty spinning post move to go to. To compliment that, she has proved to be able to step out and knock down not only a jumper, but a three-pointer. That will be valuable. She's pretty sturdy in frame, but has been picked on on defense recently in conference play. That's the only thing holding her back. That, and her shot selection (sometimes she shoots that guarded jumper early in the shot clock). She has the potential to be a good scorer from the post position, but will have to work on her defense to see major minutes this season.

So that's it. What a core to build around though. HCJA has definitely shown a keen eye for talent already. Morgan (jr), Jessica (fr), Jazimen (fr), Sheena (jr) and Chynna (fr) already part of the core, WSU is in good hands for the future. So who do you think has the most potential of all of these talented gals?[/u]

    Poll

Jasimen Gordon! I read somewhere a way that she was a 5 star recruit. I doubt if WSU has ever recruited a player with that high of a ranking. It's interesting when to review her bio on GoShockers in that she only averaged around 8 ppg in her HS Sr year if I recall correctly. Right now, she is hitting around 0.585 % of her fg attempts which is really outstanding for a frosh.

All the players listed in the poll have great upside, so it is hard to choose (which is a great thing to be able to say).

I went with Jessie because when she plays the way she is able to play, I don't think there is a player in the MVC that can guard her. She has a cross-over dribble that would be effective in the men's game and great shooting form. As Jody has said, if she ever realizes how good she is and starts playing with confidence, she is easily a POY caliber player.

I don't know where you read that she was a 5 star recruit, since she was the least heralded of the freshman.

However, we all heard coming in about Gordon's upside athletically, but I expected her to need a lot more work to get to where she is now, and she can get even better. She is one of the hardest working and smartest players on the team and once she gets into the weight room over another summer or two, she will be hard to stop.

She has done a great job at picking up what the coaches want from her, and the reward has been obvious.

Great synopsis of the players so far TE. I went with Jessica also. It's hard to go with the Juniors since they don't have that much time to "develop" and are already 2.5 years into their careers. Jessica must be a home economics major because she can "shake and bake". I think her defense will come along.

Morgan is intriguing and I agree that if she figures out that her strength as a scorer is mid-range and slashing to the basket that she will be much more effective and consistent. Her length and athleticism make her a tough matchup for MVC teams. I would like to see her get a little stronger over the off season also.

Jazimen could be The One depending on how much stronger she gets. She just has one of those frames that makes you wonder just how much Kerry can add, although there is no doubt she will get stronger. To what degree is the big question.

Sheena is just solid and plays within herself. She seems to have the best understanding of her strengths. I'm not sure she will get a lot better in her remaining year and a half, but I'm not sure she needs to. Hard to believe she could get much stronger physically.

Based on Coach Guffey's comments at the High Hoops function before the UNI game Alicia is still on the team, although it is still unkown when she will be able to play this year. She does have a red shirt year available to her, an in my opinion, I would like to see her use it at this point, although that decision has not been made. She would join Haliegh next year as the only Juniors on the team (subject to any JUCO recruits that might be added). That would balance out the classes a little bit more and would give Alica two full years of playing time.

The coaching staff also seem to be very high on the two high school recruits at the guard position, Krystle Henderson and Breanna Dawkins, that will be coming in next year.

Senior Marisah Henderson has been very solid at the point for the Shocks in her two years, but in the future the Shocks may add scoring as a legitimate threat from the point. However, despite her 5'2" frame I'm not sure future point guards will be able to match Marisah's rebounding production. Right now Marisah is tied for the team lead with Jazimen. On a rebound per inch of reach Marisah is by far the leading rebounder.

As a group these players can really get up and down the court in a hurry and if they can get out in transition they are tough to deal with.

In any case, the arrow is pointing in the right direction for the Lady Shocks.

          :good: :goshocks:

Condolences to Jody on the recent passing of her grandfather.

Coaches Guffey & Barr filled in for Jody on her weekly radio show last night.

Coach Guffey did mention that they are looking to add a player to Haleigh's class in the spring signing period which I interpreted as meaning they are looking for a two-year JUCO player to transfer in.

If that happens and Alicia takes a redshirt this year (my preference at this point) then our classes would be in pretty good balance going forward.

We would have 14 players on the roster broken down by class as follows:
3 Seniors (Morgan, Sheena and Dannah)
3 Juniors (Haleigh, Alicia and the JUCO transfer)
4 Sophs (Jessica, Chynna, Jazimen and Michelle)
4 Freshman (Krystle, BreAnna, Kelsey and Shannika)

Our sophomore class would be more experienced than most after getting quite a bit of PT this year.

Coach Guffey has talked about the possibility of redshirting Shannika Bryant, the 6'4" center out of Chicago. We could use the size inside so I don't know if this indicates Shannika may be a little bit of a project or if they just feel her PT might be pretty limited behind Chynna, Jazimen and Michelle. Maybe a combination of the two.

Not sure if there is any interest in redshirting Alicia or not. She had the best shooting stats of the 4 JUCO transfers. She shot 41% from behind the arc last year which is very good and we could certainly use the help on the perimeter. She also comes from a winning tradition as Central Arizona College went 67-1 in her two years there including a NJCAA Division 1 national championship in 2009 and a national runner-up finish in 2008.

OTOH, we pass the half-way mark of the season this week. Do we want to waste a half-season of eligibility in a rebuilding year. She could be a key component in what should be a much-improved Shocker program over the next two years.

Might Alicia's "life plans" be part of the equation? For example, if she is scheduled to graduate on time, has no interest in graduate school, ... . I have no idea that any of that is the case, but I could see it being a factor in the decision.

No doubt there can be issues outside of basketball that will impact that decision. I really have absolutely no knowledge of Alicia's situation including why she hasn't been able to play. So I am speculating purely from a basketball standpoint and I am assuming she will be able and willing to play at some point. If those are trumped by non-basketball reasons than that's fine too. We will be OK either way although I would like to see what Alicia can do for WU.
