  • Shocks 74 - UNI 64

Very nice 74-84 win over UNI to open up league play.

Shocks may have figured out a few things tonight.

For one they seem to be much better in the half court when they are attacking the basket and not just settling for the first three they see.

Morgan Boyd, in particular showed a very good mid-range game and a good ability to slash to the basket. I would like to see her may that the staple of her game while de-emphasizing the long ball. Morgan led the way with 21 points.

Haliegh also did a good job attacking the basket after going scoreless in the first half. Hopefully, Haleigh broke out of her mini-slump in the second half tonight. Haleigh notched all 17 of her points in the 2nd half.

Jazimen Gordon is starting to really come on. She was very impressive with her second consecutive double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Sheena Johnson kicked in 12 points. She is a tough defender, has a good mid-range game and her shot selection is generally very good.

The transition game was also very good tonight as the Shocks used their athleticism to consistently beat UNI down the floor.

This game was very tight all the way until the Shocks finally broke out to an 8 point lead around the 7:00 mintue mark.

The Shocks scored 74 points after having only 10 halfway throught the 1st half.

Although only one game, it does raise my hopes that the Shocks will be able to up there league win total significantly from a year ago.

    :good: :goshocks:

    TO's

The Shocks also cut their TO's down significantly from the last game where they had 27. This game, they had only 14.

Good point. With 18 assists the team's assist to turnover ratio was very good.

Marisah had 8 assists, same as last game, but cut her turnovers down from 9 to 2 from last game.

Now we just need Sheena to develop a change up for those 3 to 5 foot passes under the basket (or at least double check the team's dental coverage).

      :good:

Yes, they settled for a lot of jump shots early instead of getting shots inside.

The ability of all three to score both inside and outside was one of the key factors of the game

and to play the defense they did. UNI never really pressed at the end, just trying to trap the inbounds pass, and I think our athleticism was the basic reason for that.

We had five players with thirty minutes or more. Chynna and Jessica were on a short leash in the second half, and Michelle was on a very short leash - lackadaisical post defense on her first trip down the court and she was gone. More players need to play consistently enough to earn playing time.
