  • Lady Shocks @ CSU Rams

Should be a good initial test for the young Shocker team. The Shocks defeated CSU at home last year 76-69 in OT.

CSU is coached by former WSU assistant Kristen Holt and former Shocker point guard Taylor Steven is also on the CSU coaching staff.

CSU defeated CSU-Pueblo 81-59 and Adams State 84-67 (after being tied at 39 at the half). CSU plays Montana Friday at home to open their season.

CSU has no Seniors on its roster and is pretty much a Sophomore-Junior team. The have 3 players listed at 6'2" on their roster. They have an international flavor with 2 players from the Netherlands and 1 from Belgium. The Belgium player is Kim Mestdagh, a 5'10" Sophomore. She scored 25 and 30 points in the two exhibition games and knocked down 7 treys in each game hitting 14-23 from behind the arc.

CSU apparently is battling some sprained ankles and perhaps other injuries as they only played 7-8 players from their roster of 11 in their two exhibition games. CSU will have played 2 exhibitions and their game vs Montana compared to only the 1 exhibition played by the Shocks. Not sure how much of an advantage this will prove to be for CSU, if any. With CSU playing a game Friday and apparently being a little short-handed (maybe) the Shocks may being able to wear-down the Rams some. It appears the Shocks plan on going 10 deep (maybe 11 once Alicia Sanchez is available in mid-season) and sending players in and out of the game in waves. They should be able to go hard on the defensive end and play an uptempo game.

Other keys would seem to be how they do controlling Mestdagh and how the fare on the boards. I assume guarding Mestdagh will fall primarily on Haleigh and Morgan.

I think this game could go either way.

Here is a statistcal comaprison based on last season's stats:

    CSU vs. Wichita State comparison:
    CSU-Category-Wichita State
    59.1 Points Per Game 59.9
65.0 Points Allowed Per Game 63.4
    35.7% FG % 38.6%
    39.2% Opponent FG % 39.3%
    32.5% 3-PT Field Goal % 30.5%
    32.5% Opp. 3-PT Field Goal % 31.3%
    67.3% Free-Throw % 66.4%
    40.6 Rebounding Average 37.6
    +1.8 Rebounding Margin -2.2
    10.9 Assists Per Game 13.7
    17.5 Turnovers Per Game 17.2
15.1 Opp. Turnovers Per Game 17.3
    6.8 Steals Per Game 8.9
    2.6 Blocks Per Game 3.3

Pretty even although I'm not sure how relevant they are especially for the Shocks since we have almost a totally new team taking the floor this year.

BTW, since the Men and Women play at the same time on Sunday does anyone know how the radio coverage will work or if they are even carrying the women's game?

I will be at the Men's game but would probably listen to the women at the same time if it is on the radio.

I think the Lady Shox have something to prove on the road, and this is the first test. I think they will pull through and win this game, but by a close margin.

            A victory for Jody.

Ugh! A poor start for the Lady Shocks. Pretty disappointing. Not so much the loss, but the margin of loss. I guess our road woes continue to be an issue which maybe isn't too surprising considering our inexperience. Hopefully, we will get much better as the year progresses.

We played with the lead for much of the first half, then let it get away from us. Certainly not happy with the result, but I'm not surprised that we would struggle on the road. Hopefully we can gain some continuity and confidence at home, and make progress on learning to win on the road as the season goes on.
