  • NCAA Track & Field Championships

I'll keep this in one forum since only four athletes are left.

Competing in Fayetteville, Arkansas next week are:

    Kellyn Johnson - 5000m
You all know about Kellyn by now, she will run the 5k prelims Wednesday and the finals on Friday. She should be in the mix at the front of the race and I would think one of a half dozen girls that could win the championship.

    Brooke Demo - Pole Vault
This is her 2nd straight trip to the NCAA Outdoor meet. Last year barely missed making the finals. She'll also compete Wednesday to try and advance to Friday's final. Has been very consistent all outdoor season and on a good day could finish in the top 8 and earn all-American honors.

    Brett Trudo - Javelin
Also his 2nd straight trip to the NCAA Outdoor meet, struggled last year but looks like he is hitting his stride at the right time this year. Should qualify for the finals as both our guys will throw Wednesday and hopefully Friday. Has been ranked in the top-10 all season and has an excellent chance at getting an all-American.

    Trent Mazanec - Javelin
Newcomer to the Shockers this year, first trip to NCAA's. Has been up and down but on his good days can push Trudo. Making the Friday final would probably be a good accomplishment for him and if he bombs a big throw could place well.

And another today about Kellyn Johnson ...

I also saw channel 12 with previews of the NCAA meet last night and our qualifiers, nice to see the local media picking up on these great athletes. I guess it helps that its the only sport still going at WSU now.

Kellyn Johnson (5k), Brett Trudo (Javelin), and Brooke Demo (pole vault) all advanced to Friday's finals. Very good day for the Shockers. Kellyn looked very good basically cruising through in 3rd place in her heat. Brett and Brooke battled hard and put themselves in a nice position to gain all-american honors. Way to go Shockers!

Not the best finish today for the Shockers. Kellyn Johnson placed 10th and earn all-American honors but I'm sure she was hoping for better. I heard she was ill at this meet and ran with a fever tonight. Bad luck. Trudo didn't look like himself either and finished 12th in the javelin final. I think Demo would up 15th, outperforming her pre-meet placing.

Great job Shockers, I know there are some athletes competing in 2 weeks in Oregon at the USA Championships and Junior Nationals.

Congrats to Scott Sellers of KSU, the only NCAA champion from the 3 Kansas schools so far. Now an 8 time All American in the high jump.

Don't worry too much about it. Just do all you can do and let the rough end drag.
