  • All Sports Trophy

Certainly my calculations are nowhere near official but if I have it correct then WSU is in good shape to return this trophy to it's rightful resting spot in the Chuck.

I have us tied with Illinois State with 3 sports remaining:

1)Baseball - We have slim lead over ISU but it's more than likely that we'll finish behind the Redbirds. They are done after 2 more this weekend with the hapless Braves and we have league leader CU left. At worst we should lose no more than 2 points here.

2)Men's & Women's Track and Field - ISU finished 5th in both sports indoors which at least gives you a feel for what to expect outdoors. Our men finished 4th and women 2nd. With the addition of the throwing events and the way our team has performed I cannot see WSU doing any worse than that. I actually expect no worse than 3rd in men's and 2nd in women's. Even if ISU improves to 4th in both, WSU finishing 2nd and 3rd should be enough to secure the title.

No other program is close enough to catch either WSU or ISU, imho.

Evansville has finished in the top half of a sport exactly once this year....a tie for 5th in men's basketball. Great addition to the Valley.

Exactly why did they let Evansville in, in the first place?

How does losing the games this weekend affect the baseball race with ISU? And can they truly count the regular season baseball with teams losing up to 6 games from it?

      All Sports Trophy

WuDrWu, based on your logic above, the Shocks should have nailed the MVC All Sports trophy this weekend. You figured Ill State might finish ahead of WSU in baseball whereas WSU finished 3rd, & Ill State, 6th.

Ditto for track - the WSU women finished 2nd & Ill State, 5th. For the men, WSU finished 4th and Ill State, 5th.

Yes, I didn't see much interest in going in to further depth in the track and field, as it didn't appear anyone other than myself and '74 were interested.

Unless I am way off on my calculations, the All Sports Trophy will be returning to Wichita.

Might I add, on the rather broad shoulders of our women's programs for the most part.

5 championships this season, volleyball, women's indoor track, women's cross country, women's tennis and men's golf.

I think Doc is correct, except that the MVC site says we got 2nd in women's indoor T/F, so that is what I used. Here are the results of my research (If you see errors, please correct them):

          Code:
                       WSU ISU
          Sport Finish Finish
          ---------------------------
          Baseball 3 6
          B-ball (M) 6 3
          B-ball (W) 10 1
          CC (W) 1 3
          CC (M) 4 3
          Golf (M) 1 2
          Golf (W) 3 1
          Soccer (W) 2
          Swim/Dive 2
          Softball 7 5
          Tennis (M) 3 4
          Tennis (W) 1 4
          In. T/F (M) 4 5
          In. T/F (W) 2 5
          Out. T/F (M) 4 5
          Out. T/F (W) 2 5
          VB 1 5
          ---------------------------
                       52 61

So you're saying it wasn't official when I said it? ;-)

I can't believe my memory is so bad that I forgot we finished 2nd indoors....must have been the Kellyn Johnson factor.

I like our chances for another All-Sports Trophy for the 2009-2010 year.

I see the arrow pointing up for Men's Basketball and Baseball.

The Cross Country and Track & Field teams are in solid shape under 'Bolts leadership and should continue to compete for solid finishes in MVC competition.

Despite the departure of Chris Young he has left the Tennis programs in solid shape.

The golf programs have some interesting recruits coming in and should hold their own in the MVC.

Volleyball is arguably our most successful sport over the past 5 years and looks set to conitinue that success this year.

Women's Basketball and Softball may be our two most questionable sports. The BB team is coming off 6 poor years with a cumulative 61-113 record, 0-4 in the MVC Tournament and not even coming close to sniffing post-season play plus the team faced significant player turnover under allegedly less than cordial circumstances during Jody Adams' 1st year. OTOH, we have a highly rated recruiting class coming in so it will be interesting to see if all these new faces can come together and start this program on the road to recovery.

The Softball team would seem to require an upgrade in the key component of fast-pitch softball and that would be more consistent and effective pitching. The Shocks lost a lot of big leads and games in the late innings last year.

Bottom line though is that we seem pretty well positioned to win another All-Sports trophy this year.

Best of luck to all Shocker Teams, Coaches and Players in 2009-2010. Should be another solid year overall for Shocker athletics.

72 Shocker, i agree with what you say here. Regarding softball, since I moved here from AZ, I've paid more than passing attention to recruits from there. Softball recruited Hayley Temple from Valley Christian HS. She not only made small school POY, but she also made All-Western Region all high school classes. And, she is a pitcher. It may be that she can be used in relief if need be. Kasha Kolb was a frosh starter as a pitcher so she should be much stronger next spring, too.

Pretty sure the Shocker ladies defeated arch nemesis Missouri State in the first round of the MVC Tournament earlier this year.

I think women's basketball and women's golf will both be a lot better this season. Coach McCurdy has done an outstanding job in his short tenure, and deserves credit for resurrecting a program that was all but dead before he arrived.

I stand corrected. They are 1-4 in the MVC Tournament. They did win the "play-in" game vs MSU in St. Charles this past season by a 52-51 score.

Unfortunately the Shox are not in need of a kid who "can also pitch" We are in need of a kid who can flat out pitch. I know everyone keeps saying that Kasha now has a year of experience but the question is, did she get better during the season? Was she a totally different pitcher at the end than she was at the beginning? On the contrary, the valley teams figured out how to lay off of her rise ball and she became less effective.
The bottom line is this, Kasha has played on the highest level of Gold ball for several years. There is not much difference from high level Gold and NCAA D1. Therfore there is not much to gain from one year of college experience. However, I do think there is a lot to be gained in the weight room and that might be enough to get Kasha over the top.

Less effective? I dont think you really paid attention QP. Sure she gave up some bombs late in games to lose, but the hits she gave up were less an less. Not to mention how many scoring chances did we NOT capitalize on? IMHO

My expectations are for Kasha to be more effective in 2010. That said, I think QuickPtich's point is still valid. We need another solid pitcher to shore up the pitching staff.

I would also hope that we improve at least incrementally on the offensive side of the ball since we have our entire starting lineup back. We only graduated 30 base hits from last year's roster as the 3 seniors combined for 30 hits in 118 AB's for a 0.254 average.

Still the key, as is always the case in fast-pitch softball, is what kind of performances will we get from the circle.

Just on experience alone we should be able to improve our position in the MVC a notch or two over last year.
