After a ragged first half which found the Shocks trailing, 24-27, they played a sterling second half, shooting 58.6% and scoring 49 points for a solid win.
Daria picked up two fouls and sat most of the first half, so we had no one to stop Jasmine Gibson who scored 13. Our only answer was Marcy who scored 12. In fact, Marcy scored 12 of our last 15 for the half.
Marisah was a starter rather than Val, and she ran the point for all but a few trips down the court. We had a strict seven-player rotation this game - no Jadhon, no Shantel.
Marisah went off in the second half, scoring 16. For much of the half, we ran a high-ball-screen offense and she scored or created something. Some of her scoring was with some pretty crazy shots, but she got enough of them to go down.
Val scored all of her 15 in the second half. Early in the second half, I commented that if Val could get ten or so we should be okay. Shortly thereafter, we went on a 12-0 run (of which Val had eight including two three-balls) to give us a 42-33 lead at the 13 minute mark and we were in control the rest of the game, ahead anywhere from eight to thirteen points.
Marcy with sixteen and Daria with ten were our other scorers in double figures.
With Daria available the entire second half, Gibson only scored two after the break. However, Erica Smith scored 25 of her 29 in the second half, the large majority of it with dribble penetration.
We were outrebounded by three, but had only thirteen turnovers to SIU's twenty, twelve steals to their three.
It was a very nice win leading into Senior Sunday. Hopefully, we can do an encore against Evansville, an 80-67 loser in Springfield tonight.
