Lady Shocks 71-59 Mercer
A nice win against a good team. Observations, in no particular order.
* We played a lot of 2-3 zone. In part this may have been due to Haleigh not being suited up, although she was on the bench. I did not hear the pregame show, but there was no mention on JA's part of the postgame show as to the reason she did not dress. So six players had 191 minutes.
* Four of the five starters were in double figures. Daria led the parade with 17 followed by Jacie and Marcy with 16 and Val with 12. Marisah had 8. Jacie scored early in the first half and Val was scoring late in the first half. Daria and Marcy did most of their scoring in the second half.
* Early on, we got some easy buckets by getting out in the passing lanes and making some steals. But just as Kent State did, Mercer adjusted and there were far fewer of those later.
* We ran a 2-2-1 zone press fairly often, mostly in the second half as I recall. It was not overly aggressive, but not a soft press, either. We got a number of turnovers from it.
* We trailed only once, midway in the first half. But when we stretched the lead out to eight to ten points, Mercer soon had it back to three and even down to one at the seven minute mark. Then Val hit a three-ball (assist to Jadhon!), her only points of the second half, and we were in control the rest of the game.
* For much of the first half, we were a little impatient on offense, jacking up a lot of outside shots with some time left on the clock. Fortunately, Jacie hit a couple of threes, but Marisah was way off the mark with her attempts. They were probably sagging off the non-Val outside shooters to cause some of this. In the second half, we had some nice penetration dribbles (even when Mercer was in a zone) and dish-offs.
* We outrebounded Mercer and had a number of offensive rebounds - but they had a lot, too.
* We did a very nice job on the free throws - 19 of 23 for 82.6%.
* The win moved us to 127 on the RealTimeRPI power ratings. Bradley is at 103. http://realtimerpi.com/ncaab/Women.html
* The Valley begins Friday with Bradley coming to town. This team is not finishing last in the Valley.
