  • Shocks vs. Iona

Looks like the Gaels will be a tough test for the Shox tomorrow. They've started out 3-0 against what looks like decent competition but I don't know a thing about women's college basketball.

I think tomorrow might be a good time for me to attend my first women's game.

Just got home and didn't get to go to the game. Looking at the stats online. Did something happen to Lankster that she's only played 6min?

Nice win. They still need to cut down on their turnovers.

Very entertaining game...much, much improved over last season.

The bench didn't play very well. All the starters basically played 30+ minutes.

Yes, too many turnovers especially in the 1st half.

Jody said in her post game show that she could sense that her bench just wasn't there today so she went with her starters as much as possible, with the execption of Daria Frazier who again found herself in foul trouble.

Yeoman's work put in by Marci, Marisah, Val and Jaci and nice work by Jadhon and Ashley (particularly Jadhon) in filling in for Daria.

Marci with her fourth consecutive double-double is looking particularly solid, but at some point teams are really going to collapse on her if we don't find more consistent shooting from the perimeter.

Nice to see the Shocks pull out wins in close games, although I can't believe we let Iona's guard drive the floor at the end of the game almost totally uncontested until she took her 10 foot runner that bounced off the rim at the buzzer.

Bottom line though is a win is a win is a win.

Wasn't Illinois State the top pick in the Valley preseason??

Not exactly a sterling beginning for the Lady Redbirds.

I'm not sure if teams can collapse on Mary too much, because Val is the big time shooter. We certainly can have better perimeter shooting, but I think that teams are worried enough about Val that they are going to be hesitant to leave her open.

Val certainly has a nice stroke but at 5 - 15 from behind the arc this year she has been pretty average so far.

In any case, if you only have 1 perimeter player to shut down you can do that and still collapse around Marcy.

However, I do think we are capable of having a decent perimeter game between Val, Jaci and Marisah. So far they have been a little inconsistent. If they can consistenly knock down 35-40% of their treys as a group we will be much tougher to deal with on the offensive end.

Note that our opponents are shooting 35% from behind the arc in through our 1st four games. Shocks are at 27.5% on 35 fewer attemtps.

They haven't hit as high as you may like yet, but we're only a few games in. Siemens, Hoyt and Henderson are all good enough shooters that teams can't afford to double off of them without paying for it.

I am glad to see Marcy having so much success this year. I always thought she could be a solid presence inside and so far she's gone beyond that. Hopefully she can keep it up as this team has been missing that kind of player for a few years now.

Yes, each of the 3 have shown they are capable of knocking down the perimeter shot, although it seems that only one of them has been on during each of the games. If we can get all three of them consistently knocking down the three-balls we can certainly present some problems to the opponent.
