  • Shocks vs ORU

The last time WSU played ORU in Tulsa in December 2005, the Shockers turned in one of the most embarrassing performances ever, losing to the Golden Eagles by an 81-49 score and committing 43 turnovers in the process. Yes, Forty-Three, Four Three, 10+10+10+10+3, a bunch.

We lost at home to ORU in December 2006 by a more respectable 71-55 score. Still, the Shockers turned the ball over 25 times in that game.

Not sure what kind of team ORU has this year, they won their exhibition game agaisnt Central Oklahoma by a rather close 84-79 score and they lost their only regular season game on the road to Marquette by a score of 89-67.

Their Coach is in his 13th year at ORU so they will probably play the same high pressure defense that the Shockers have not handled well in recent years.

They have 5 Seniors and 4 Juniors on their 15 player roster so they have a big experience advantage over the Shocks.

Against Marquette they received 20 point performances from 5'9" Freshman Georgia Jones who took 10 of ORU's 20 trey attempts and made 4 and from 5'10" Junior Janae Voelker from Newton.

The keys for the Shockers IMHO:

    1. Keep the turnovers to a minimum and work for good shots.

    2. ORU's Jones has a good height advantage over Jacie. Haleigh Lankster, at 5'9" may be valualble in defending Jones. Daria Frazier needs to control Voelker without getting in foul trouble.

    3. Shocks need to at least hold their own on the boards.

    4. As always it will help if the Shocks can shoot a decent % from the field.

This will be an interesting early test of how the Shocks will handle playing on the road under Coach Adams.

You are correct. I saw the score and just assumed a win by ORU, but they did in fact lose their Exhibition Game.

      Thanks for the correction.

Do you think we have a chance to break our long road losing streak?

That losing streak is currently 20 games (24 if you count nuetral site games).

Shockers get blasted at half-time at ORU 47-28.

Poor offense, poor defense, poor rebounding.

Not sure why this team simply can not repsond on the road, but I sure Jody can not be happy at all.

It will be interesting to see if they can respond at all in the second half.

I was kidding Doc about his -35 PPG differential for MVC road games, but if tonight is any indication I may have to eat crow on that one.

        :(

ORU outrebounding the Shox 26 - 13. The Shocks have 8 turnovers which is not terrible, but the have only forced 4 turnovers.

That is a 17 possession advantage for ORU and they have taken advantage of the extra possessions.

Sounds like they've at least come out the 2nd half a little better.

Trading baskets. Not getting enough stops.

Daria Frazier picked up her 4th foul fairly early in the half.

Jacie Hoyt just picks up her 4th foul at the under 12:00 minute media time out.

ORU is already in the double bonus.

I have no doubt Jody is going to turn this around but we are simply overmatched right now.

I told you it was going to be closer to -100......and even that might not be nearly enough.

Shocks with a late rally behind Marcy Sudbeck and Marisah Henderson close to within 89-76.

Just dug themselves to deep of a hole in the 1st half.

Marcy with a career high 24 points plus 10 rebounds and 2 blocks.

                    Daria and Jacie were non-factors.

Small positive is the second half effort. Last year we lose this game by 35 - 40 points.

Jody said she really did not make any adjustments at half-time. She said she basically just challenged her players to be more aggressive and play with more intensity.

The ladies at least responded fairly well to that challenge.

Despite the late come back the game was really never in question.

Some nice minutes off the bench for Soph Jadhon Kerr and Frosh Haleigh Lankster. That may be valuable later in the season.

Biggest difference between the halfs was we missed what sounded like open shots in the first and hit them in the second. On the radio broadcast it sounded like they missed at least 2-3 layups.

Also, a very big difference on the boards. ORU had a 26-13 advantage in the 1st half. The Shocks outrebounded ORU 21-16 in the 2nd half.

Shocks did shoot a very good 54.8% from the field in the 2nd half after shooting only 37.0% on the 1st half.

The teams shot a combined 60 free throws  . The Shocks were a very solid 20-25 while ORU was 22-35.

ORU was a tourny team last year I think. IT is a shame we dug ourselves such a big hole in the first half. One thing I have noticed in the first two games is our team getting in foul trouble very early and putting the opponent in the bonus quickly. Is this due to the pressure Adams wants, a lack of quickness from some of the players, tight whistles, a young team, or a combination of all?

I can't comment on the ORU game because I did not see the game, but if a total of 60 free throws are shot that gives some indication how the game was called. The opener against CSU was called pretty tight also, I thought. However, I'm not saying it favored one team over the other in either case.

I will say that Daria Frazier and Jacie Hoyt have been in foul trouble in both games (in fact, both fouled out in both games) and these are two of our better athletes. What I see with Daria and Jacie is that they have developed some bad habits that seem to be hard for them to break. In Daria's case she seems to get a lot of offensive foul calls. In Jacie's case she trys to steal the ball on every possession it seems and tends to get a lot of reaching fouls.

We need both ladies on the floor more going forward. Daria is athletic enough that she can pull up and shoot over a defender. She does not have to drive everything to the basket. Jacie just needs to pick her spots better. Both of them are capable of being good defenders IMHO.

Another factor against ORU last night was the beating we took on the boards in the 1st half. ORU simply had about 17 more possessions in the 1st half than did the Shockers and therefore, a lot more opportunities for the Shocks to foul while defending.
