    Good to know.

I'm encouraged to hear these girls are athletic. Win or lose, they're going to be fun to watch.

They were practicing bright and early this morning. I didn't get to hang around and watch as I had to get to work.

          New Guard

Marisah average 8 assists a game & 6 steals a game over her career at Sumner Academy in Kans City, KS. Those are pretty impressive stats for anywhere. What I don't understand is this: She is transferring from the U of Arkansas - Fort Smith. Is that a Community College or a 4-year school? If it's the latter, she'll have to lay out a year, right?

I'm pretty sure Ark-Ft Smith is a juco.

              From the Wikipedia:

The University of Arkansas – Fort Smith, known also as UA Fort Smith, is a public, co-educational,
four-year university. It is one of 11 campuses that make up the University of Arkansas System and is located in Fort Smith, Arkansas. UA Fort Smith is the sixth largest university in Arkansas, with a fall 2007 credit enrollment of approximately 6,500.

UAFS is a JUCO. A few of the recruits the WSU men have been on have ended up there. At one point, we even had a couple of guys from UAFS on our radar.

                  UA-FS only has 7 sports programs - baseball, M/W b-ball, VB, M/W tennis and M/W golf.

They are members of the NJCAA.

It is very hard to evaluate a player based on a bio and a Coach putting their best traits forward.

Despite her dimimutive stature at 5'2" I would not be surprised to see Marisah getting plenty of time at the point, maybe even starting. Her assist numbers are pretty impressive and I picture a very quick player.
Leading her JUCO team to a 34-2 record ain't bad either. I see her challenge being able to defend bigger guards who might want to take her inside or who could shoot over her from the perimeter.

I anticipate Ashley being perhaps a Nichole Switzer type of player.

You generally like JUCO transfers to contribute immediately and with the short roster they no doubt will get their chances. That said these recruits are the best we could do in the circumstances and both apparently had some issues getting through the NCAA clearinghouse. Maybe that's why they were still available and perhaps they will prove to be solid players.
Very diffiucult to know for sure.

The last JUCO recruit Jane made, Kristen Donnell out of Neosho County, did not work out, as she played only sparingly and poorly her Junior year and left the team after that one year. She was also out of Sumner Academy.

The lone freshman recruit Haleigh comes from a winning program which is a positive. However, when a Coach says a players strength is "pure athletic ability" I think we may have a little bit of a project on our hands as a basketball player. Perhaps a player you would normally redshirt if you had a full roster.

11 players on the roster should be enough to get us through the season as long as we can hold he injury bug to a minimum.

I don't see anything in this group of players to make me think this will not be another tough season for the Shocks.

Another all too common transition season for a new coach. Hopefully, Jody is the one that can get this program turned around and at least competitive in the MVC down the road.

One thing is for certain. If coach Adams and staff are any kind of recruiters at all, they ought to be able to make a nice haul this year. 3 graduating seniors, 2 open schollies and a ton of potential playing time should be enough to attract at least a couple of impact players.

If I am correct we will have 4 open scholies as women basketball can have as many as 15 scholorships.

Ah, I forgot about that. Good catch.

So, make that seven schollies to work with.

                            Scholarships

My understanding is that Men's basketball gets 13 scholarships and women get 14 scholarships (one more), not 15.
