The Shocker women set 13 new PR's at the Red Raider Shootout but these were mostly set by Freshman and Sophomores establishing marks early in their careers. Of the 13 PR's only 2 of them would be scoring or close to scoring marks on the AAC performance charts.

The best perfourmance was a javelin PR of 144-0 by Shocker freshman mulit-athlete Kendra Henry that is 7th best in the AAC this year and 2nd best mark by an AAC freshman this year.

Senior Meghan Holmes PR of 18-8.5 in the long jump was the 11th best mark in the AAC this year.

Wichita State is hosting The Shocker Open this Friday, May 4th at Cessna Stadium At first glance there is not much here to really see. It appears to a glorified intra-squad meet iwth some athletes from D-II Oklahoma Christian (Edmund, OK) and from two NAIA schools, Central Christian (McPerhson) and some Okies from Muskogee (Bacone College) thrown in. There will also be some former Shocker athletes competing though the Shocer Track Club. Perhaps a warm-up meet for a few athletes wiith the AAC Outdoor Chanmpinships next weekend.

Still there might be some decent perfourmances. After in Track & Field you mostly competing against the clock or the tape and yoruself.

Field Events start at 1:30 and Running Events at 5:00. Here is the Schedule. The price is right as admission is free. A live video stream is also available.

This is major rebuilding year for he Shocks as they try to reset the women's team after losing a ton of talent to graduation last year. I

I did notice that Shocker Jr. Rebekah Topham is running the 400m hurdles. Rebekah, who is redshirting this year is an outswtanding middle distance runner and I am not sure she has ever run that event in competitition before.

Former Shocker Gavyn Yetter is scheduled to participate in the shot put, 100m hurles and 400m hurdles for the Shocker Track Club. Any event with Gavyn in it is worth a look..

Jr. Kelsey Slawson provied the main highlight for the Shocker men Friday at the Shocker open setting a new school record of 51-0.75 in the shot put which #5 in the AAC this season.

The Shocks will head to Cincinnati next weekend, May 11-13, for the AAC Championships.

The Shocker women are going through a major rebuild and will most likely finish at or near the bottom of the upcoming AAC Outdoor Track and Field Chapionships next Friday, Satruday and Sunday I thought I would see where the Shocker women might pick up a few points based on the AAC Performance Charts as they now stand. I

By my calculations based on a finish equal to the current performance charts would produce about 45 points for the Shocker women. In last year's AAC Championships that would be good for a 9th place finish. All 12 AAC schools field women's track and field.

Of course, points aren't awarded for your best peformance during the season but the actual results next weekend.

The Shocker men or the Shocker women need to outscore Tulsa to win the inaugural Havoc in the Heartlnad Trophy.The Shocker men chart out at around 130 points vs 70 for the Tulsa men and the Shocker women chart out at around 45 points vs 35 for the Tulsa women. Maybe we get all 6 Havoc poiints remaining to be had.

The rebuilding Lady Shocks will go into the AAC Outdoor T&F Championships with very modest goals. Like perhaps trying to avoid finishing last as they did in the indoor championships earlier this year.

The Lady Shocks hopes of doing that probably rely most prominently in how Fr. Winny Koskei does in the 5k on Friday and the 10k on Saturday.

AAC Tournament Central

Day 1 of the heptathlon is done. Fr. Kendra Henry is in 4th place at 2,930 and Jr. Carlea Miles is in 13th (last place) at 2,475.

Today's events included the 100m hurdles, the high jump the shot put and the 200m dash.

Carlea won the shot put with a PR of 40-8.75 however she had performed poorly in the high jump and the 200m dash. In the high jump she was only able to clear 4-7 well below her PR of 5-1.75 and that probalby cost her 150+ points. She followed that with her shot put PR but had big problems in the 200m dash to close out her day. She ran a 30.62 which was 5 seconds of her best time and by far the slowest on the day which cost her 350-400 points.. Hopefully she did not pull up lame as the Shocks were probalby counting on her for points in the open javelin. But doesn't sound good.

Kendra also set a PR in the shot put at 39-9.75 to finish 2nd behind Carlea. Kendra also set a new outdoor PR in the high jump at 5-4.5 which was good enough for 5th in that event. The speed events are not Kendra's strong suit at this point in her career but she did just good enough to hang on to 4th place bit with a number of competitors within striking distgance.

Will have to see if Carlea continues. She is 364 points out of 8th place. Even if she can go it may not make sense to continue.

Tomorrow's events are the long jump, the javelin and the 800m run.

Kendra is not a very good long jumper but is decent in the javelin and the 800m run. She has a good shot at setting a new PR with a decent perfourmance tomorrow and perhaps scoring a handful of points for the Lady Shocks.

Shocker Freshman Winny Koskei wins the 10k in time of 35:21.14. Congrats to Winny.

Distance coach Kirk Hunter on Winny's win (always good to have an athlete name WINny and to live up to their name):

"We are really excited for Winny," said distance coach Kirk Hunter. "From where she has come from last year, she is not the runner that she is today. She trained really hard over the summer, put in the miles, came back and was ok in cross country. Comes into the indoor season and scores some points in the 5k and didn't even score in the 3k, then she comes into outdoor and wins the conference. That is just an amazing escalation and performance that she has done throughout the year."

Winny has a day of rest before she competes in the 5000m race Sunday night, she enters that race as the No. 2 seed behind Hannah Miller of SMU.

Another Shocker Freshman has come through with a second AAC Championship. Very much like Ben Johnson's charge in the decathlon Shocker freshman Kendra Henry rallied from 4th place at the end of Day 1 to make up a 236 point deficit to win the AAC Heptathlon championship.

Kendra's long jump was nothing special at 16-4. In fact it was pretty poor only scoring 557 points. That dropped her back to 5th place 437 points behind the leader with only 2 events remaining.

Kendra responded by winning the javelin with a throw of 153-7 for 798 points picking up significant points on the 4 ladies in front of her overall who all had relatively poor throws.. That moved her back into 4th place but still 125 points behind the leader.

Kendra finished 2nd run at 2:26.83 which was good enough to pass the 3 athletes in front of her to win the decathlon by 38 points with a score of 5,018 points which beat her previous best score by a whopping 457 points.

Coming into the meet Kendra was seed 5th based on this season's performances.

As feared Carlea appears to have sustained an injury. She did not record a distance in the long jump nor a time in the 800m run. She did make a javelin attempt but only threw 110 feet which is 55 feet short of her best. Probably just wanted to see if she coudl do it because she would have been counted on for points in the open javelin. Looks like that may not happen.

The Lady Shocks are just a little bit ahead of the perfourmance charts but it did hurt having Alesa Frey no height in the pole vault and if Carlea Miles is out of the Javelin due to injury as it appears is the case that will hurt tomorrow.

Winny has a day of rest before she competes in the 5000m race Sunday night, she enters that race as the No. 2 seed behind Hannah Miller of SMU.

If you watch the replay, you'll see one hell of a gutty performance by Hannah Miller. She led 23+ laps until Koskei blew by her with about 450M left and Miller had no answer. She collapsed near the end of the race, not once but twice in the last 35 or so meters and if she didn't pass out as she walked across the finish line, I'm sure she wished she had because she was clearly not well. She essentially locked up from head to toe and frankly it is tough to watch. How she managed to finish, and stay 3rd is a real testament to endurance and guts. To give you an idea of how much she collapsed, the two were basically tied with 400M left and Winnie beat Hannah to the line by more than 35 seconds.

Hopefully Hannah was able to recover today, but based on the finish in the 10K she's going to have her hands full tomorrow, if she can still compete. Hell of an effort Hannah.

Yeah, that was a bit scary. She's a terrific runner and hopefully she will bounce back quickly but she was certainly in need of medical attention at the end of that race.

My concerns about Carlea Miles were wayoverblown as she not only participated in the javelin but had a storng throw of 163-2, just short of her PR, to claim 3rd place. Newly crowned AAC Heptathlon Champion Kendra Henry followed up her strong heptathlon javelin performance with another strong throw breaking her PR set in the heptathlon yesterday with a toss of 156-6 for 4th place as the Shocks pick up 11 points.

Jr. Katie Murray solid 5-7 high jump tied for 7th chipping in 1.5 points to the Shockers total. That jump was just and inch shy of Katie's PR.

Looks like the Womens's 5K is being run in 2 sections. The unseeded section 1st which included 3 Shockers and the seeded section after that which inlcudes Winnie Koskei.

At this point Tulsa leads the Shockers 38 to 32.5. Winnie is the 2nd seed and Tulsa has the 10th seed. It will be interesting to see if Hanna Miller has recovered sufficiently to compete tonight.

The only other place the Shockers might gain some points on Tulsa would be in the shot put with Kelsey Slawson.

As of right now the Lady Shocks are dead last with only 3 events left to complete. The 5k, the 4x400 relay and the shot put. Good chance the Shocks will not score in the 4x400 relay.

Hannah Miller is in the 5k race, whcih is good to see, and she jumps out to the lead right off the bat as she did in the 10k. Miller looks like she wants to set a fast pace as she is pulling out to a big lead early.

Miller has about a 4 second lead over Winny 1/3 into the race.

Winnie has closed the gab at the 7:00 minute mark and is now drafting off of Miller like she did in the 10k. 7 laps to go.

Winny didn't quite realize where the finish line was but she wins easily. Very impressive racing by the Freshman.

Kelsey Slawson finishes 6th in the shot put wiht a heave of 50-8.75 to pick up 3 poitns for the Lady Shockers.

The Shockers edge ahead of Tulsa 45.5 to 43. We will just have to wait and see how Tulsa does in the 4 x 400 relay.
