Shocks could not keep up with 8th ranked Texas Tech today falling 4-0 in Lubbock with 3 singles matches going unfinished.

Interestingly, in the No. 1 singles Shocker So. Fatima Bizhukova, who knocked off the #3 nationally ranked singles player yesterday, was leading the #5 nationally ranked Gabriela Talaba 6-2, 5-2 when the match ended. May want to keep an eye on Fatima. The Shockers may have something special with her.

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Shockers (3-1) fell short to No. 8 Texas Tech 4-0 Saturday in the championship round of the ITA Kick-off at the McLeod Tennis Center.

Shocker Sophomore Fatima Bizhukova is the American Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week.

I guess beating the #3 nationally ranked singles player and having the #5 nationally ranked signles player on the edge of degeat when their match was termianted before finishing was a pretty good week. Actually, that kind of understates what Fatima did. She did in not just defeat these players she cominated them. She beat #3 ranked Andrea Lazaro of FIU 6-1, 6-2 and was ahead of #5 ranked Gabriela Talaba 6-2, 5-2 of Texas Tech which went unfinished when Texas Tech clinched the dual win.

Looks like Fatima has caught Sully's attention: http://goshockers.com/news/2018/1/30...-in-texas.aspx

Shocks lose a close one at home to North Carolina State 4-3.

NC State won the doubles poiint and the match essentially came down to who would win the #1 singles. Shocker So. Fatima Bizhukova who has been playing very well could not quite get it done losing in 3 sets 4-6, 7-6 (7-2) and 6-7 (4-7).

The Lady Shocks moved to 5-2 on the season with a couple of relatively easy 4-0 wins over Texas-Arlington and UMKC today at the Wichita Country Club.

WICHITA, Kan. -- The Wichita State women's tennis team swept UT-Arlington and UMKC (4-0) Sunday at the Wichita Country Club to improve to 5-2 on the season.

Shocker Jr. Sandra Honigova picks up the Shockers' 2nd consecutive AAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week honors.

            http://goshockers.com/news/2018/2/6/...-the-week.aspx

A couple of interesting matches this weekend. On Saturday, the Shocks head to Fayetteville to take on Arkansas and on Sunday the Shocks host Old Dominion at 10:00 am at the Wichita Country Club.

Arkansas is 2-3 on the season but have played a pretty tough schedule. The beat fellow AAC member Tulsa 4-3 at home and beat Oklahoma 4-3 in Norman. Losses have been to Wake Forest (2-4) and Kansas (3-4) both on nuetral courts and at #18 Oklahoma State 4-2. This looks like a very challenging match for the Shocks.

Old Dominion is 8-1 on the season with their only loss at home to Tennesee (3-4). Not real sure how strong of a schedule they have played. To my untrained eye it doesn't look to overwhelming but they have 5 sweeps, a 6-1 win and two 5-2 wins including one over Virginia. This past Sunday the Shockers' two matches at the WCC were free of charge. Might be a fun match to take in on Sunday morning.

Singles Rankings for the Shockers: for Fatima Bizhukova

              for Sandra Honigova.

First time two singles player have been ranked in same week since weekly rankings began in 1999-2000 for the Shockers.

Here are the complete ITA singles rankings (a total of 125 players).

None of the Shocker doubles teams are ranked in the Top 60. The Shocker's opponent Satruday, Arkansas, has 3 teams in the Top 60 at #32, #35 and #36.

Arkansas also has 2 players in the singles rankings at #67 and at #113.

BTW, the Shocks are 1-21 all-time against Arkansas so that pretty much settles who the favorite will be in Saturday's match. This would be an excellent win if the Shocks can get it.

Entertaining and competitive match at Arkansas this morning. Shocks drop the doubles point kind of surprisingly. But they come out roaring in the singles with #2 Sandra Honigova picking up the first point 6-4 6-2 and Giulia Guidetti the second 6-2 6-2. The other 4 are up for grabs with WSU taking the first set in 2 of the matches and Arkansas the other 2.

Boom! At the #6 Sarvinoz Saidhujaeva comes from down a break in the 2nd to win the tie break 9-7 and take the match 6-1 7-6. It's 3-1 Shocks and they need just one more point.

2 of the remaining 3 matches are in the 3rd. #1 Fatima Bizhukova dropped the first set but was up 2 breaks at 5-1 but has given 1 back and leads 5-3 trying to force a deciding set.

Gabriela Porubin closes out the match with a 6-3 3-6 6-3 win at the #4. Shocks win 4-1.

Not surprising that the Shockers dropped the doubles point as all 3 of the Arkansas double pairings are ranked in the Top 60. None of the Shocker doubles teams are currently ranked.

Really nice work by the Shocks in singles play lead by #104 Sandra Honigova's straight set win over Arkansas' #67 Ana Oparenovic.

Shocks now 2-21 all-time vs Arkansas. Both wins coming in the last 4 years under Coach Foster. Another under the radar head coach that WSU is very lucky to have.

Shocks host 8-2 Old Dominion Sunday morning at 10:00 am at the Wichita Country Club.

Shocks move to 7-2 on the season by defeating ODU 4-2 this morning at the Wichita Country Club in a pretty competitive match.

WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State held off a late Old Dominion rally to take down the Monarchs, 4-2 Sunday at the Wichita Country Club.

Nothing wrong with that win. ODU is solid. They are 8-3 with tough losses to OU where they lost 3 of 4 tiebreaks and RV Tennessee 4-3 when UT came back from 1-3 winning 2 of the matches in the 3rd. Good solid win and Coach Foster continues to drive a nationally prominent program right here in the 316.

Little surprise Nebraska took the doubles point. Shocks off to a decent start in the singles but need four of six to take the match.

Shocks take the 1st set in 4 of the 6 matches. Nebraska gets the 6th and it's 1-1 in the 2nd set there and the #2 match is on serve 4-5 in the 1st set.

                            Nebraska won't go away easily.

Shocker Sarvi Saidhujaeva wins her 2nd set to send the #6 singles to a 3rd set.

Nebraska leading in 4 of the remaining 5 2nd sets with the remaining 2nd set tied.

#4 singles goes to a 3rd set as Gabriela loses 3-6 in set 2.

Nebraska goes up 2-0 with a 6-4, 6-1 win of Sandra Honigova in #2 singles.

#1 singles going to a 3rd set. So at this point #1, #4 and #6 signles in a 3rd set. Set 2 in #3 singles in a tiebreaker.

Giulia Guidetti just won the tiebreaker to win the #3 singles 6-3, 7-6 to give the Shocks their 1st point of the match.
