  • 2017-18 Shocker Women's Tennis

Nice community outreach event that the Lady Shockers will be participating in on Saturday, August 26th.

I noticed that the Lady Shocker tennis roster has no newcomers listed for this season yet and only have a roster of 6 players at this point. Perhaps it is as simple as the roster simply has not been updated yet but more than likely it is just due to the nature of college tennis recruiting and its heavy reliance on international players. Note that the Men's team also has no newcomers on there roster at this point. Last year the women's team added 2 newcomers in the fall and 2 who joined the team in January and the men added 3 players in January. So this is not really that unusual I guess.

Marija Mastilovic who was a Freshman last seaon did not return this year. She played last fall and some in the Spring but it appears she lost playing time to Marta Belluco in the Spring.

It doesn't make much difference in the Fall season as these are not dual team events. The Shocks can field whatever set of singles players and doubles teams they want to compete in the Fall Events. However, in the Spring having only 6 players gives you no cushion against injuries or illness. So I anticipate the Shocks will add a player or two in January. The Shockers have 2 seniors on the roster this year, Giulia Guidetti and Gabriela Proubin.

The Shocker Fall schedule is actually a couple events lighter this year than last year. Last year they played in tournaments at Drake, OU and SMU in the Fall. This year they are playing in tournaments at Missouri and SMU. Also the Valley has hosted a Individual Championship Tournament in the Fall. The American Conference does not.

In the Spring season the Shockers have 23 dual team events scheduled before the American Conference Championships in Dallas. Three of those duals are with American Conference teams. SMU, Tulsa and UCF.

Last year the Shockers beat #43 ranked SMU 5-2 in Dallas and they beat #35 ranked Tulsa 4-3 in Tulsa. They will get the same opportunity this year.

Wichita State's top doubles tandem will open with the program's highest national ranking in more than two decades.

Senior Gabriela Porubin and sophomore Fatima Bizhukova checked in at No. 16 in the 2017 Oracle/ITA Division 1 Women's National Rankings in doubles.

In singles action, Bizhukova will begin the season at No. 102. The sophomore from Balashiha, Russia, finished last season with a 22-6 record in singles action including a victory over No. 64 Ana Oparenovic of Arkansas in NCAA Regional action. Bizhukova ended the season with a team-best 15-match winning streak.

The Lady Shocks finished off the Mizzou Invite with a couple of good doubles wins over K-State but had a tough day in singles play going 0-5 against fellow AAC member Memphis. 2 of the losses to Memphis were due to Sophomores Fatima Bizhukova and Ting-Ya Hsu retiring from their matches due to injury.

The Lady Shocks opened their 2018 Spring Season this morning at the SMU Tennis Complex with a 7-0 sweep of Stephen F. Austin. No details avalable at this point that I can find.

The Shocks take on fellow AAC member SMU tomorrow at Noon in what should be a good early season test.

The Lady Shocks downed SMU 5-2 to move to 2-0 on the season. I nice win against a good AAC opponent.

DALLAS, Texas --- The Wichita State women's tennis came away victorious (5-2) over SMU Saturday at the SMU Tennis Complex. The victory gives the Shockers their first win against an American Conference opponent in their inaugural season with the conference.

The Lady Shocks moved to 3-0 on the season with a 4-2 win over Florida International at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend event host by Texas Tech in Lubbock.

The Shocks lost the doubles point with the #15 ranked FIU pair of Ulyana Grib and Maryna Veksler defeated the #23 ranked Shocker duo of Fatima Bizhukova and Gabriela Porubin 6-3 in addition to winning the #3 doubles 6-2. FIU also lead the #2 doubles 5-4 when they clinched the doubles point.

However, the Shockers came roaring back to win 4 singles matches to take the match including a huge boost the Sophomore Fatima Bizhukova who defeated (make that crushed) #3 nationally ranked Andrea Lazaro 6-1, 6-1. Yes, #3 in the nation. Giulia Guidetti, Gabriela Porubin and Sandra Honigova chipped in the other 3 needed singles points.

Host Texas Tech took care of St. Mary's (CA) 4-0 and will play the Shockers tomorrow at 2:00 pm.

LUBBOCK, Texas – Fatima Bizhukova took down No. 3 ranked Andrea Lazaro, helping Wichita State to a 4-2 victory over FIU Saturday at the McLeod Tennis Center in Lubbock.
