  • Shocker SB at Southern Illinois

The Shockers take to the road this weekend to meet the Salukis of Southern Illinois to continue their conference season. The Saturday DH starts at noon with a single game on Sunday starting at 11am.

Southern Illinois has a season record of 23-21. They are in a tie for fourth in the Valley with a record of 10-7. They have swept Drake, taken two from Bradley and Illinois State and have one win in their series with Loyola and Northern Iowa. They split the two games thus far in their series with Evansville.

Offensive leaders for the Salukis in conference play are Shaye Harre (OPS of 1.079 and three homers - with five doubles, eight of her ten hits are for extra bases), Maddy Vermejan (1.053) and Merri Anne Patterson (.953 and three homers). Brianna Jones (ERA of 2.34 and WHIP of 1.21) and Savanna Dover (4.58 and 1.81) have all but one start in the Valley for Southern Illinois.

The Shockers are third in the Valley with a 12-5 record. A number of offensive players have big numbers: MackenzieW (OPS of 1.200 and three homers), McKenzieA (OPS of 1.161) and Madison (1.118 and four homers). Kelli has an OPS of .969, and Laurie is at .952 with four homers.

In the circle, Katie has an ERA of 1.91 with a WHIP of 1.21. Jenni's numbers continue to improve. Her ERA is 2.54 with a WHIP of 1.45.

With the way Katie and Jenni have been pitching the last few weeks, does anyone expect Bailey to pitch another inning this season? Curious on everyone's thoughts.

Given that they are in the stretch run for the 1 or 2 seed for the conference tournament I cannot see Katie or Jenni not in the circle. You never know though that's why you need a staff at least 3 pitchers. Someone gets hurt, struggles, Blowout and you need an innings eater etc.. Its been 14 games since she has been in the circle there must some reason for the lack of work for Bailey and I would rather not speculate as to how come. Maybe they are just working on her development for next year since Katie and Jenni are graduating.

Not really. The only scenario I can envision is that both Katie and Jenni get rocked in some game, a run-rule defeat seems imminent, and so there is nothing to lose by giving Bailey the chance to get a few outs. What I hope is happening is that Coach Ryne and she have identified some issues and are working on them. Physical issues? Mental? In any case, this is not the point in the season to say, "I think we have this figured out. Let's run her out there and see."

Hmm. First time poster. Allen. Is this Bailey's boyfriend. :)

Softball starts crucial trip — Wednesday’s split with Missouri State dropped the Shockers into third in the Missouri Valley Conference softball standings. If WSU is going to make a run at first place, it will have to do it away on the road.

WSU (27-15, 12-5 MVC) starts a seven-game trip on Saturday at fourth-place Southern Illinois (23-21, 10-7). The doubleheader begins at noon.

On Tuesday, the Shockers finish the series with Missouri State (22-16, 10-7) in Springfield. The swing concludes at second-place Northern Iowa (25-15, 13-4).

Todays' games have been cancelled. The Shockers will play a DH against Southern Illinois tomorrow starting at 11am. This is the first game to be lost to weather during Valley play.

Katie has the start in this game.

Merri Anne Patterson led off the second and fourth innings with solo homers for the Salukis. They added a third run later in the fourth: walk, error on a sac bunt when Macklin started to throw to second but changed her mind and hit Katie in the back of the head with the throw to first, sac bunt, fielder's choice when Kelli's throw to the plate on a ground ball was late. After another walk, Jenni came on to get two ground ball outs, including an out at the plate.

The Shocks did not counter until the seventh when Laurie struck a two-out homer after Macklin led off the inning with a single.

Katie gave up three runs (only two earned, despite the box score) in 3.1 innings, walking two and striking five. Jenni gave up a hit and a walk in her 2.2 innings. Among the five Shocker hits were two singles by Kelli with Laurie's homer being the only extra base hit.

                        Jenni has this start.

Southern Illinois scored single runs in the first (single, single, sac bunt, sac fly) and second (lead-off homer).

The Shocks tied the game in the fifth on a single by Mackenzie, error on a ground ball by Kelli, stolen base by Kelli and a two-run single by McKenzie. A pitching change by the Salukis followed, but three Shockers failed to drive in McKenzie from second who had advanced on the throw home.

The bottom of the sixth brought on two Shocker errors to set up a three-run homer by Harre, all three runs being unearned.

Mackenzie led off the seventh with a homer. After two outs, a double by Macklin and a single by Laurie scored another run, but Asea ended the game by lining out to third.

Jenni gave up the five runs, two earned, on four hits and three walks with one strike out. The Shocks had seven hits with Mackenzie having a double and homer and McKenzie having two singles. Macklin's double was the other extra-base hit.

These two losses really hurt. Sounds like the Shocker defense which has been only so-so this season really hurt them today. Although and the offense was not able to bail them out today in either game.
