Shockers have 42 women athletes at the Arkansas Spring Invitational which was dodging rain drops a good part of Friday's action.

Nikki Larch-Miller and Breanne Borman are not competing in the heptathlon.

Sr. Gavyn Yetter is in 2nd place in the heptathlon with 3,010 points and Fr. Sydney Wilson is 4th with 2,760 points. Marteisha Caines no-heighted in the high jump, typically one of her stronger events, and did not finish in the 200M.

Looks like So. Kelsey Slawson set a new PR of 155-4 (only 4 inches behind the winner) in the discuss. Shocker newcomer, Jr. Tyra Bickham, a transfer from Northern Illinois who threw 157-4 last week at Emporia State, was 3rd with a throw of 149-10.

Gavyn Yetter did come from behind on Saturday to win the Heptathlon with 5,032 points although that is well off her PR.

Shocker Fr. Sydney Wilson placed 5th with a score of 4,326.

The Sam Adams Multi appears to perhaps be sponsored by the Santa Barbara Track Club (SBTC) which is made up of former collegiate athletes.

SBTC had 4 athletes entered into the Heptathlon but 1 scratched. Looks like there are a couple of more former collegians, one who has been on the Canadian Olympic team.

WSU with 5 athletes and Cal Poly with 3 athletes are the D-1 participants and there are a few others from smaller schools.

After Day 1 and 4 events (100H, HJ, SP, 200) Nikke Larch-Miller is 4th but she is the leading collegiate athlete with 3,296 points. Breanne Borman is 6th at 3,127. Gavyn Yetter 7th at 3,098. Marteisha Caines 8th at 3,013 and Claudio Rojo 10th at 2,944.

Shocker Sr. Nikki Larch-Miller finished 3rd in the Sam Adams Multi at Santa Barbara with a score of 5,464 points finishing behind two ex-collegians now competing for the Santa Barbara Track Club. Nikki's score was about 350 points shy of her personal best. In fact, her PR would have won this event.

But this was Nikki's 1st heptathlon of the outdoor season.

So. Claudia Rojo finished 5th (2nd among collegians) with 4,932 points just shy of her PR by 33 points.

Breanne Borman scratched from all 3 of today's events and Marteisha Caines and Gavyn Yetter skipped the final event, the 800m run. Hopefully, no serious injuries involved with those decisions.

Shocker Jr. Tyra Bickham, a transfer from Northern Illinois, appears to have set a new Shocker school record in the (new) javelin with a throw of 171-05 passing teammate Carlea Holt-Miles' record of 164-11 set last year.

Shocker Sr. Nikki Larch-Miller won the heptathlon at the KT Woodman Classic hosted by Wichita State this week. Nikki scored 5,551 in her second heptathlon of the season improving on her score of 5,464 from the Sam Adams Multi Invitational just 4 days ago. This score might qualify Nikki the NCAA Championships but it is still well short of her PR of 5,812 points she set last year.

Participating in two heptathlons so close toghether seems a bit unusual. If the indoor season is any guide they probably would like to get Nikki solidly qualified for the National Championships before the Valley Championship in mid-May so that she can leave the heptathlon to her teammates and contribute points in as many individual events as possible.

Breanne Borman was 2nd with 5,224 points, Gavyn Yetter was 3rd at 5,174 and Marteisha Caines was 4th at 5,147. Borman and Yetter have PR of 5,400+ but Marteisha was just shy of her PR of 5,150. But it is still early in the outdoor season and you would expect or really want your multi-eventers peaking at this point.

WICHITA, Kan.  --  Nikki Larch-Miller won the Heptathlon and Kaden Griffin won the Decathlon after the first two days of the K.T. Woodman Multi-Events Wednesday afternoon.

Shocker Sr. Jamesia Milton won the Hammer Throw at the Texas Tech Red Raiders Shoot-Out today with a toss of 202-4. Not only is that a new PR for Jamesia but I think that may be a new school record breaking the previous records of 201-0 set by Shocker Hall of Famer Katie Panek in 1998. Jamesia joins Katie and Chandra Andrews (200-4) as the only Shocker women to ever pass the 200' mark in the hammer throw.

The 2nd place throw by a Texas Tech athlete was 185-0.

Taylor Larch-Miller, Daysha Bullocks, Martiesha Caines and Nikki Larch-Miller set a new school record in the 4x400 relay at Texas Tech in 3:39.18 breaking the previous record of 3:41.45 set in 2005. Congratulations Ladies.

Looks like Breanne Borman set a new PR today at the Shocker Open with a toss of 44-0.05. That was 3rd behind solid throws from teammates Kelsey Slawson at 48-2.75 and Tyra Bickham at 46-0.05. In fact, Kelsey Sawson's is a new Wichita State record.

That is a pretty solid throw for a multi-event athlete like Breanne who is not a shot put or throws specialist.

Courtney Mills (40-2.25), Megahn Holmes (40-0), Martiesha Caines (39-5.25) and (38-11.5) all with triple jumps that could score top 5 points in the Valley Championship.

Claudia Rojo PR's in the 400H with a 1:00.67 which is 3rd best in the Valley so far this year.

The Shocker Men and Women are picked to win the Valley Championships this Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Cessna Statdium.

The Shocker Women were the unanimous pick to win followed by Illinois State, Indiana State and SIU.

I would encourage Shocker fans to try to take in part of this meet. I went to the last Valley Track and Field meet held at Cessna Statdium and really enjoyed it.

Friday, if you happen to be off, will primarily be Day 1 of the Decathlon and Heptathlon events and several field events a couple of which will be in the throwing pits south of Koch Arena. These events can kind of drag on although I enjoy the multi-events myself. The field events include the Hammer Throw and Javelin for for the men and women and the women's Pole Vault. The running events on Friday evening are 1,500m and 200m prelims that qualify athletes for the finals on Sunday plus the finals of the 10,000m runs which is the final event scheduled on Friday since those races take about 30 minutes + to run.

On Saturday, they finish off the Decathlon and Heptathlon events. Field events include Shot Put, High Jump and Long Jump for both the men and women. Running events are all prelims except for the days final events the men's and women's 3,000m Steeplechases.

Sunday brings the men's and women's triple jumps and discus finals and the pole vault finals plus the finals of 18 running events. 9 for the men and 9 for the women.

Personally I enjoy it all but if you said I just want to see the most concentrated, sustained, point scoring action I would recommend taking in the action on Sunday. The 18 running event finals for example will occur over a 3-hour span from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The men's pole vault and triple jump will also be going on inside the stadium at that time.

Right now the weather is looking pretty good for a track meet.

                            Schedule of Events

Shockers hope to go out with a bang in their final MVC Track & Field Championship.

They have their sights set on possibly breaking the MVC scoring record of 204 points set by SIU in 2010.

Might be fun to attend Sunday's afternoon action just to see if the Shocks can get reach that goal.
