To beat a dead horse, I finally had a chance to look at it again. I cannot tell that a call of any sort was ever made. (After consulting an authority, a correction from a previous statement follows), the order of who has the call is U3 (the umpire who starts on the third base line) and then PU. I know the home plate umpire did not make a call - you can see that from a shot from center field. On the home plate shot, U3 is not moving in that direction as long as they are still in the picture.

This may be a case of "if nobody saw it - if nobody knows - the call has to be Safe."

Or it may be that U3 went out, but at the last second was screened by the SS as she went out (about the 1:04:50 mark). U3 made an uncertain Out call, and after getting help in their discussion, changed the call to Safe. (At one point before the commercial, U3 steps back from the umpire huddle - in preparation for giving a Safe call? - before rejoining the huddle.) Seeing the final call (by U3 or PU) instead of a commercial would give us a clue about this scenario. The other item that supports this scenario is that Coach Fischer approached U3 to appeal the call which would happen if U3 made the original call.

At any rate, I have it on very good authority (I'll stop there) that Ashley short-hopped the ball.

I will now let the poor horse Rest In Peace.
