  • Shockers v 9/T9 Oklahoma

The Shockers have their home opener in a mid-week clash with 9/T9 Oklahoma. The single game with the Sooners is on Wednesday and begins at 5pm.

Oklahoma was ranked 1/1 in the preseason polls and are the defending National Champions. Their record is 9-4. As you would expect, they play a challenging schedule. They have played twelve different teams, nine of which were at least RV in one of the two primary polls.

As noted in another thread, the OU stats are hidden in the Big 12 stats. If an OU player is not in the Top Ten there, then we can't know about them here. From the Big 12 site, Caleigh Clifton has an OPS of 1.136 and Nicole Pendley has three homers. Sydney Romero is in the Top Ten for runs scored and doubles, while Shay Knighten is on the list for RBI. The two main pitchers are Paige Parker, the mainstay of last year's staff, who has an ERA of 2.35 and a WHIP of 1.11, and Paige Lowary, a transfer from Missouri where there were some troubles with the coaching approach last year. This Paige has an ERA of 2.23 and a WHIP of 1.28. Both Paiges average about seven strikeouts per game. Although both of these ladies are very high-quality pitchers, the Shockers faced both of them last year, perhaps diminishing the intimidation factor some.

The Shocker offensive stats compare well, but the competition is obviously weaker. Laurie has an OPS of 1.334 with four homers, Kelli is 1.109 with a BA of .500, McKenzieA (with less playing time than the others) is 1.096, Macklin is 1.056 with four homers and MackenzieW is 1.033.

Katie has an ERA of 1.39 and a WHIP of 1.07. Her record is 8-2. Bailey's bad weekend lifted her ERA to 3.05 and her WHIP to 1.31.

Good job by Katie working around a lead off single and a 1-out stolen base in the 3rd. Looked like a pretty good catch in LF by Kelli Spring although the camera work wasn't exactly stellar.

A long, no-doubter road the wind out of the park for OU in the 2nd as the Sooners jump out to 1-0 lead.

Paige Luellen pounds a bomb to LF through the crosswind in the bottom of the 4th to put the Shocks up 3-2.

That was only the Shocks 2nd hit of the game.

Kelli Spring reached on a 1-out error by the OU 3B. Macklin Hitz, perhaps the Shockers best power hitter, got jammed and hit the shortest fly ball of her career that went only about 10ft in the air and landed with a dead stop about 10 ft from home plate for the Shocks 1st hit. Phil Mickelson could not hit a better flop shot.

Laurie Derrico struck out for the 2nd out before Paige unloaded to left.

BTW, it looks like the entire outfield wall is surrounded by Shocker fans taking in a freebie. Perhaps folks leaving the Shocker baseball game. Petty cool for the Shocker ladies.

Long way to go though and you know OU won't go down easily.

1,113 fans in attendance. That is SRO for Wilkins Stadium. That doesn't count all the folks ringing the outfield wall. Nice.

OU with a duck snort to right and an error on Laurie at SS on a very tough short hop on a chopper.

Freshman Bailey Klitzke is coming on in relief in place of Kaite. Not really sure that is the right move but we will see. Katie pitched quite well and deserved better this inning.

Oh Brother, Shock falling apart. A passed ball (on not really a very good pitch) puts runners on 2nd and 3rd. Then Bailey boots a little one hooper back to the circle with the runner from 3rd going home.

This pitching change has been a disaster. OU now up 5-3. Not sure what HCKB was thinking there.

Bailey escapes without further damange. Shocks still in the game.

Bailey started tehe 6th pretty good then a bit of bad luck struck. A 3-Dudette (to paraphrase Brent Kemnitz) bloop to right center results in a 2-out double. That was follwoed by a walk, wild-pitch and a triple to plate 2 more OU runs.

OU now leads 7-3. Probably too much real estate to make up against Paige Parker.

I'm not sure who is doing the color commentary on the WSU-OU ESPN3 stream but she is very good.

                    Final OU 7 - Shockers 3

Didn't like the pitching change but the Shockers probably lose anyway as they were pretty much shut down by Paige Parker after they took their 3-2 lead in the 4th.

You won't beat a team like OU very often when you allow 4 unearned runs. You have to make them earn everything they get and otherwise play well to beat them.

Bailey made some nice pitches. Hopefully, this proves to be a good learning experience for her. We will definitely need her this year and I think she can be an effective pitcher by the time Valley play comes around.

There was once a video (Shocker web site probably) where Jamie was giving a guided video tour of the new softball facilities. She went through the three-minute or so take with nary a hitch - didn't have to redo any of it. And it was very good - no "This is where we chill" and nothing else while the camera pans the room.
