  • Shocker Women's Basektball 2016-17 Nonconference Games

The Shocks open their season today with a tough home game against former Valley foe Creighton.

Creighton is picked to win the Big East this season. However, the Bluejays did lose their opener 63-56 at South Dakota State. The Bluejays shot only 28% from the floor during the 1st three quarters and trailed 48-32. They did rally in the 4th quarter but had simpy dug too deep of a hole. Bottom line is they can be had.

Creighton has always stressed offense and Jody's Shocker teams have always leaned on their defense so this game is usually a game of contrasting style and which style can win out.

Shocks get Taquandra Mike back for tody's game. She missed both exhibition games due to a concussion. Not sure about Jyar Francis' availabiliy but Taquandra, along with Rangie Bessard, are probably the key to the Shocks this year.

This game will be a good measuring stick for where the Shocks currently stand. Not sure what to expect.

    Shockers 62-54 Creighton

The Shocks built an early lead (40-22 at the half, 53-36 at 3Q) and then held on to beat the Jays. It's hard for me to judge, but I do not think these are the Jays of the recent past. We seemed to run out of gas midway through the third quarter.

Some of the newbies will contribute: Tompkins on the inside, Thompson at the point.

Rangie led the scoring with 17. Tompkins and Thompson each had 11.

The Shocks had 16 TOs to 19 for Creighton. Neither team could shoot the three. Without the three-ball, the Shockers were 18 of 30 for 60% and 47% overall. Creighton was 33%.

        WSU Win over Creighton

Looking at the stats, things look fairly even except WSU made 23 baskets to CU's 16.

Where is WSU's Jiar Francis? She didn't play in either exhibition game or this game today either. She was highly touted by HCJAB before the season.

In looking at Creighton's 56-63 loss on the road to South Dakota State, the game today had a similar trajectory. Creighton does not shoot well from the field and falls far behind, and then has a nice rally in Q4 (using their press?) to make the game respectable.

The Shockers were bothered by the press today and never attacked it when they broke it. We had a couple of players that got lost pretty easily on defense. There is work to be done, but it's early.

I think we have a nice team. Lot's to improve on, but a nice team. Well done!

Yes, very nice win for the Shocks. There may be some ups and downs but the Shocks seem to have some good pieces to work with and should be a tough out in the Valley this year.

                        UMKC 56 - 54 WSU

Shocks trailed 44-32 after 3 quarters. Rallied to tie the game at 54-all but lost on a UMKC basket in the paint with 1.5 seconds in the game.

Rangie Bessard led the Shockers with 20 points on 8-18 shooting, Freshman Kayla Williams had a standout game as she added 17 points on 6-11 shooting incuding 4-9 treys.
Andra Stovall added 8 points hitting all 3 of her FG's incuding 1 trey.

No one else did much offensively. Mike (1-8), Lockhart (0-3), Thompson (1-6), Lee (0-1), and Tompkins (1-3) were a combined 3-21 (14.3%).

The Shocks looked like they were going to pull it out late as UMKC went cold and passive but the Shocks just couldn't quite get it done.

1-1 is kind of where I thought they would be but I thought the would lose to Creighton and beat UMKC. Still not exacty sure where this team is. Kayla Williams performance tonight is encouraging though.

UMKC played a 2-3 matchup for all but maybe one possession, and we never solved it - could not get the ball inside and could not shoot it from the outside. Our defensive intensity picked up in Q4 and created some offense, and as noted, Kayla got hot.

For most of the game, the Roos scoring came from two guards and we could not defend either one of them. They seemed to get a shot anytime they wanted one - at least until Q4. The pair ended the game 13-19 from the field, 4-8 from behind the arc (just one player had those shots) and had 36 of the UMKC 56 points. Only one other player took more than five shots, the rest of the team being 8-26 from the field. Just two of them. *Sigh*

                            Jiar Francis

The TV announcers last night said Jiar Francis is out with a concussion. They didn't say when she would be back. HCJAB touted her before the season started.

It sounds like the Shox need to learn how to play Vs a 2-3 Zone, eh!

A 3rd player did take 9 shots for UMKC hitting 5 of them plus a free throw for 11 points. So 3 UMKC players had 47 of their 56 points on 18-28 (64.3%) with the rest of the team shooitng 3-17 (17.6%) OTOH, Rangie, Kayla and Aundra scored 45 of the Shocks 54 points on 17-32 (56.3%) with the rest of the team hitting 3-21 (14.3%). So the Roos were just enough more efficient with their trio to overcome the Shocks trio and the Shocks 34-28 rebound advantage.

Personally, I think the Shocker's rest of the team is better than UMKC's rest of the team but they weren't last night and I suppose that is the rest of the story.
