The Shocker Women have been installed as the pre-meet favorite (as are the Shocker Men) to win the Valley Outdoor Track and Field Championship this coming Friday, Saturday and Sunday (May 13-15) in Terre Haute.

ST. LOUIS- The Wichita State men's and women's teams received top votes from the conference rankings going into the 2016 Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Wichita Eagle article focusing on Breanne Broman. For those who believe today's athletes are soft and fragile, especially female athletes, this article would seem to dispel that notion at least with respect to Breanne.

Hopefully, Breanne can get through the Valley Championship and maybe even contribute a few points here and there.

The Shocker women are off to a strong start in the Heptathlon. It helps when 7 of the 14 entrants in the event are Shockers. UNI's Rachel Peth will probably be the strongest challenger in the Heptathlon. Shocker Gavyn Yetter has the best seasonal mark coming in at 5,447. The form chart has the Shocks picking up a whopping 33 points in the heptathlon. A nice head start heading into the individual events.

      100m Dash: 2. Jr. Marteisha Caines 978, 3. Jr. Breanne Borman 967, 4. Jr. Gavyn Yetter 950, 5. Jr. Emily Doffing 946, 6. Fr. Cluadia Rojo 909, 7. Sr. Sierra Hays 882, 10. Fr. Carlea Holt 852

      Update:

      High Jump: 1. Caines 891, 3. Borman 783, 4. Rojo 747, 7T. Holt 678, 7T. Yetter 678, 10. Hays 610, 12 Doffing 544

      Great start for Marteisha Caines.

Shocker Jr. picked up 6 points with her 3rd place finish in the Women's Hammer Throw with a toss of 192-04. SIU picked up 15 points in this event followed closely by UNI with 14 points. Jamesia's score was in line with the form chart and SIU and UNI socred more or less in line with the form chart.

In the Heptathlon shot put the Shockers scored as follows:

          1. Yetter 702, 2. Hays 692, 3. Borman 673, 4. Holt 616, 6. Rojo 583, 8. Caines 536, 9. Doffing 533

The 200m dash remains today with the Long Jump, Javelin and 800m run tomorrow. At this point I can't find the cumulative scores but after 3 events I believe UNI's Rachel Peth is leading with a score of 2,441. The Shocks top 4 are Breanne Borman 2,423, Marteisha Caines 2,330, Gavyn Yetter 2,330 and Claudia Rojo 2,239. I expect both Rachel Peth and Gavyn Yetter to have strong 200m races. With Breanne it all depnds on how her foot and knee hold up.

          Update:

          1. Yetter 908, 2T. Doffing 862, 4. Caines 855, 6. Borman 847, 7. Hays 817, 8. Rojo 802, 9. Holt 800

I have UNI's Rachel Peth at 3,289 points, WSU's Breanne Borman at 3,270, Gavyn Yetter 3,238, Marteisha Caines 3,185, and Claudia Rojo at 3,041.

It will be interesting to see how Breanne's injuries will respond tomorrow. Based on the article in the Eagle regarding Breanne's injuries Coach Rainbolt will be happy with just about any points she can contribute.

Shocker heptatletes Breanne Borman, Gavyin Yetter, Carlea Holt and Sierra Hays are done for the day. Those 4 are entered in the open javelin throw along with fellow Shockers Sr. Rachel Shearrer, So. Kesley Tenbrink, Sr. Madelyn Haltead, and So. Andrea Navarro.

As with the Heptathlon the Shocks have a numbers advantage in the javelin with 8 of the 17 competitors. Shocker Fr. Carlea Holt has the top throw coming in at 47.14m (154-8). If this event goes according to form the Shocks should do very well. Perhaps as many as 28 points.

Much like the men, the WSU women had a very solid day.

Through 4 events scored, they lead SIU 49-27.

That being said, WSU needs to be way ahead come Sunday, when their weaker events are contested.

Kelsey Slawson gets a little surprising 6th in the shot put and the Shocks pick up a +2 points on form while SIU and UNI lose 2 and 5, respectively.

Shocks didn't score in the long jump as expected. No stunning form differences.

Shocks qualify none in the 400 (expected), 1 in the 110H (neither Larch-MIller twins running, fortunate for the rest of the Valley) as expected and didn't qualify anyone in the 800, again, as expected.

Waiting on full results on the high jump, but they just announced that Ashley Peterson from WSU is the champion.

Shocks go 1, 2 and tie for 4th for 22.5 points beating form by 10.5 points. It's been a great meet so far for the women and the men.
