If I am reading the standings correctly.......If SIU could take 2 of 3 at home against UNI and Drake, who is in a big slump, drops the 3rd game of their series at Illinois State, then WSU would need just 1 more win out of 4 to clinch the regular season title.

Their are 4 teams still in the race mathematically. WSU with 4 games remaining, UNI with 6 games, DU with 4 games and SIU with 7 games. If all scheduled games are played the Shocks will have played 25 Valley games and the other three teams will have played 26. Therefore, the Shocks will have to finish with a higher winning percentage to claim the regular season title.

Based on my calculations the Shocks magic numbers are 3 vs UNI and 2 vs DU and SIU. Any combination of Shocker wins and UNI losses totaling 3 will clinch for the Shocks and any combination of 2 with either DU or SIU will eliminate those teams chances.

In your scenario the magic number totals would be met 3 for UNI, and 2 for SIU and DU and the Shockers would be the regular season Champs. I like calculating the magic numbers because it makes it easy to track where the Shocks will sit from game to game.

SIU has a single game remaining at Evansville on Wednesday which could be tough especially if Evansville pitches Fr. Morgan Florey and her 1.97 ERA which is very likely.

As for the Shocks the big issue is the status and availability of Jenni Brooks.

UNI beat SIU 1-0 in Game 1 of their DH today. SIU 1 Shocker win or 1 SIU loss away from be eliminating from the regular season title chase.

Impressive day by the Saluki pitching staff, allowing only one run to the Panthers who came into the weekend with the highest team OPS in conference games at 1.008. Maybe this an example of the old adage that good pitching beats good hitting. SIU had a team ERA of 2.03, the lowest in the Valley.

But giving up only one run to the best offense (although the Shocks are not far behind) in the Valley is very, very impressive. Next weekend should be quite interesting. Having a hot pitching staff at Tournament time is a wonderful thing, and SIU seems to have one.
