  • Lady Shockers Golf - NCAA Regional at Baton Rouge

The Lady Shocker Golf team will play in the Baton Rouge regional on May 5-7 hosted by LSU.

The Lady Shocks are seeded 17th out of the 18 teams in the regional.

The top 6 teams advance to the NCAA Championships plus the top 3 individuals not on those teams will advance.

It is not really reasonable to expect the Lady Shocks to advance. I think a reasonable goal for the Lady Shocks would be to outperform their seed by 2 or 3 spots.

    Good luck Ladies.

Is the MVC that bad in ladies golf that the AQ is a 17 seed?

It would appear so. Comparable to the lack of parity in women's basketball I guess.

Shockers are in 14th after the 1st first round of the Baton Rouge Regional at 24 over par.

Taryn Torgerson lead the way with a 3-over par 75 which on the individual leaderboard ties her for 32nd out of 96 golfers.

As I mentioned above very unlikely that the Lady Shocks will advance out of the regional. Their goal is to try to finish as much as possible above their 17th seed (out of 18 teams).

Teams sitting in 11th through 16th are pretty tightly bunched after Round 1.

The Shocks improved their team score slightly from yesterday with a +20 effort vs +24 in Round 1 despite a 13-over 85 carded by Meghan Schuetz Jack (which was fortunately the throw away score). Meghan's round turned South fairly quickly. Starting on the 10th hole she initiated her round with a double-bogey and four holes later had an Ernie Els moment as she carded 12 on the 448 yard par 5 14th hole. That pretty much left it up to her 4 teammates. Maria Alejandra Villalobos lead the way today with a 2-over 74 followed closely by Bryce Schroeder with a 3-over 75. After 11 holes Bryce was at 1 under but she bogeyed 4 of her final 7 holes.

However, that improvement really did not improve the Shocks position as they are 15th after today's round. North Florida and New Mexico are 2 shots behind the Shocks. The Shocks trail 12th place Augusta by 8, 13th place North Carolina State by 6 and 14th place Denver by 1. The Shocks will probably need to shoot around 10-over in Round 3 to move up.

Individually, Taryn and Bryce are +10 over 2 rounds and in a 8-way tie for 55th.

South Carolina tore it up today with their Top 4 golfers shooting -6, -3, -3, +1 for a team total of 11 under par as they move from 4 back of Round 1 leader Washington to take the lead 8 shots clear of Washington at the end of Round 2.

in Golfstat's Relative Ranking System the Shocks were ranked #110. Note that 72 teams made the tournament, of which 28 are AQ's so there are a good number of teams ranked ahead of the Shocks who did not make the Tournament. Shocks are only in because the Valley has an AQ.

The Lady Shocks played to their seed as they finished 17th. I suspect they are a bit disappointed with that as it looked like they had a good shot to finish 14th until things kind of fell apart towards the end of today's 3rd round. Taryn Torgerson was at even par with 7 holes remaining but she was +8 over those final 7 holes. Maria Alejandra Villalobos bogeyed her final 5 holes, Gavrilla Arya was +4 on her final 3 holes, Meghan Schuetz Jack was even on her first 9 but 7-over on her final 9 holes. Only Bryce Schroeder was able to keep it together as she shot 1-over on her final 9 and +4 on the day.

Florida roared back from a 13 stroke deficit at the end of Round 2 with an 11-under effort in the final round to match the 11-under South Carolina put up in Round 2 as the Gators and Gamecocks tied for first.
