  • Shockers at Missouri State

The Shockers complete the home-and-home with their travel partner when they meet Missouri State in Springfield at 2pm on Saturday.

The Bears enter the weekend with a record of 11-4 in the Valley, trailing Northern Iowa by a half-game. UNI hosts Bradley and Loyola this weekend.

The guard combo of Tyonna Snow and Kenzie Williams lead the offense for Missouri State. Snow averages 16.5 ppg and has been Player of the Week three times. Williams, twice a POW, averages 13.6 ppg. Liza Fruendt now averages 11.1 ppg, and Hilary Chvatal is the leading rebounder at 7.3 rpg (closely followed by Snow). The Bears average 70.5 ppg as a team, but their opponents average 65.6.

The Shocks, 4-11 in the Valley, are led by (conference stats only) Rangie at 15.5 ppg and TaQuandra at 13.0 ppg. Rangie has 7.7 rpg. Their opponents outscore the Shockers by ten per game.

Not a good day for the Lady Shocks as they fall 45-74 at Missouri State.

The Shocks had zero assists on 17 baskets and turned the ball over 20 times. Not the kind of assists to turnover ratio you would like to see.

MSU has 15 assists on 26 baskets and turned the ball over 15 times.

        Sunday Scores

        NORTHERN IOWA 63-52 Loyola

        DRAKE 78-45 Bradley

        Southern Illinois 62-58 INDIANA STATE

        ILLINOIS STATE 65-59 Evansville

Northern Iowa maintains its one-game lead over Drake, Missouri State and Southern Illinois. The Panthers close their regular season on the road against SIU and Evansville as does Drake, their travel partner. Missouri State hosts Indiana State and Illinois State.

The Shockers trail Illinois State for the seventh spot by one game and host them next Thursday night.

Looks like Evansville has locked up the cellar and secured the 10th seed in the Valley Tournament.

The Shocks, Illinois State and Bradley have also locked in a game in the play-in round with seeding still to be determined. My prediction is Bradley will be the #9 seed and we may have to go to the tiebreakers to determine the #7 and #8 seeds between the Shocks and Redbirds.

A 3-way tie for the regular season championship looks very possible. I predict SIU will be the #4 seed and Indiana State and Loyola will finish tied for 5th with the tiebreakers again determining seeding in the tournament.

We'll know for sure next Saturday. I see no clear cut favorite to win the Valley Tournament and the accompanying auto-bid. Missouri State has an RPI of 96, the only sub-100 RPI in the league. 3 teams, Bradley (306), Illinois State (320) and Evansville (328) have 300+ RPI's. Whoever does get the auto-bid will probably be seeded no better than 14th in the NCAA Tournament.

We should own the tiebreaker over Illinois State with our win over Southern Illinois. The Redbirds best win is against Indiana State.
