  • Shocker SB at Demarini Desert Classic (UNLV)

The Shockers head west for their second Classic of the season. (These are not really tournaments, of course, just teams getting together in (hopefully) nice weather to play five games or so.) This one is in Las Vegas, hosted by UNLV, and runs Thursday (just a few games in the evening) through Sunday. There are nineteen teams there, most playing five games, a few playing six.

On Friday, the Shocks meet San Jose State at 330pm (all times CT) and Hawai'i at 8pm. Saturday has the Shockers playing Cal State Northridge at 11am and Oregon State immediately following. The Sunday game is against Boise State with an 11am start time.

The Spartans of San Jose State are picked third in the nine-team Mountain West Conference. Boise State and Colorado State (and three other teams in the tournament) are in the same conference. SJSU started their season at the Kajikawa Classic (Arizona State) where they were 1-5, one of the losses being to Oregon State. The Kajikawa is one of the stronger early tournaments. Jessie Hufstetler and Jessica Madrid are seniors who look to lead the offense. The top returning pitcher is Katelyn Linford.

Hawai'i is a member of the Big West Conference where they are picked third of eight teams. The Rainbow Wahine hosted a true tournament last weekend where they finished 4-1. A loss on Monday moved their record to 4-2. Pitcher Brittany Hitchcock and first baseman Heather Morales were second-team all-conference picks last year. Their coach, Bob Coolen, reached the 900-win milestone this past weekend.

Cal State Northridge, the defending champion in the Big West, is picked fourth. The Matadors return the Player of the Year in catcher Katie Hooper (.392 and 16 home runs). Daphne Pofek is the lone returning pitcher. CSN was 3-2 at the Kajikawa Classic last weekend.

Oregon State finished 4-1 at the Kajikawa, run-ruling #18 Kentucky along the way and also defeating CSUN and SJSU. The Beavers, picked eighth, are one of the nine Pac-12 teams who were not in a preseason poll. Meehra Nelson is already their mainstay in the circle and was Freshman of the Week in the Pac-12 this past week. Infielder McKenna Arriota is the principal offensive threat. She was a member of the gold medal-winning US Junior National Team this past summer.

Boise State was picked last in the Mountain West. They were 0-5 at the Kajikawa including a loss to Bradley. Outfielder Kayla Clausen is the returning leader of the Bronco offense, while transfer Jenna Bassler got the most innings this past weekend.

This weekend could be a gauge of where this team is, although it is very early in the season. The Shockers could go 5-0, or they could have another 2-3 weekend.

Again it is early, but the pitching the first weekend looked much like last year's. Offensively, Cacy got off to a slow start last year after her banner sophomore year, and this past weekend was the same - only .118. PaigeL (1.380 OPS) stepped right in where she left off after being out a year with her ACL injury. Brittany (.859 OPS) was a steady performer as (nearly) always.

The games at this tournament are scheduled 2:15 apart. The two games played last night took 2:20 and 2:25, similar to games played last weekend. With a minimum of twenty minutes between games, the time between start times is closer to 2:45, and that may not be enough.

The upshot of this? The Shockers have the third and fifth time slots today. Their first game is likely to start about 430pm CT, and the second game about 10pm CT.

Host UNLV has the only game in the sixth time slot of the day, scheduled for an 815pm start local time. Ha! They will be on the field after midnight, he predicted lately.

WDIK. The Shocker game against San Jose State will probably start on time. Utah run-ruled Robert Morris in 1:30 to start the day, and at 230pm CT, San Jose State is batting in the top of the sixth and trailing against Utah.

              Game One

Jenni gets the start against San Jose State and Katelyn Linford, who had a few more innings that any of the other three pitchers used by the Spartans last weekend, gets the start for them. SJSU lost to Utah 4-0 in the game just previous to this one. Brittany is not in the lineup with Macklin taking her place and playing in right field, PaigeL moving to left. Brittany has had arm problems recently which may have prevented her from throwing, but she is not even the DP. Who knows. Cassidy Kelsheimer is catching and Mackenzie is at third, just as in the later games at the Aggie Classic.

Freshman Cassidy Kelsheimer (Strong City, KS) puts the Shocks up 1-0 with a solo homer in the top of the 2nd. Pride of the Tallgrass Prairie indeed.

In the bottom of the 3rd a lead off single, stolen base, wild pitch and another single by SJS ties it up at 1. Kelsey Sterneker comes on in relief of Jenni Brooks for the Shocks.

Jenni gives up the earned run on two hits, two walks and a wild pitch in 2+ innings. Not sure if that qualifies as a quick hook or not.

A bit perhaps but Kelsey did a good job getting out of the 3rd. Perhaps they just didn't like what they were seeing from Jenni or perhaps the swings SJS was getting against her.

With 2 outs in the top of the 4th Macklin Hitz walked and Liz Broyles followed with a home run to put the Shocks back on top 3-1.

Based on the way the Auburn staff was handled (I know - different place, different time), I suspect the above.

And is three-up, three-down in the fourth.

Shocks load the bases with no outs and the top of the order up (Kelly Spring in the 2 hole). Need to take advantage.
