Thinking about catching the Tulsa game at 4:30 then grabbing a bite to eat at either the Shocker Sports Grill in RSC or at Shocker Hall then take in the Shocker volleyball match vs Illinois State at 7:00 in the Chuck. I need to get clearance from my better half 1st though.

Shockers knock of Creighton 5-1 behind solid pitching by Katie Malone who went the distance giving up 5 hits and 1 run (unearned I think). I would describe Katie's outing as workmanlike.
Jr. Katie was clearly the key to the win. The Shocks jumped on Andales Sydney Eck who started and went 5 innings for the Bluejays for 3 runs in the bottom of the 1st and that would prove enough for Katie. Kudos also to So. McKenzie Adams (Broken Arrow, OK) who came in as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the 5th and delivered an RBI line drive triple into the RF corner to answer the run Creighton scored in the top of the 5th and then made an excellent running catch to rob Creighton of an extra base RBI hit down the line in RF in the top of the 6th. Jr. Macklin Hitz closed out the scoring with a pinch hit home run to LF in the bottom of the 6th.
All 5 Shocker freshwomen played. I would say they were pretty solid defensively but somewhat overmatched when they were at the plate.
Always nice to put a loss on Creighton even if it doesn't count and even if their starting pitcher was from Andale and their leadoff hitter was a Wichita kid.
Also nice to see Kevin Hooper coaching at 1st base for the Shocks.
Nice crowd including a decent contingent of Creighton fans which probably had a lot to do with Sydney Eck (Andale/Butler CC) and Aujanae McCoy (Wichita West/Butler CC) playing for Creighton.

Creighton 1-5 Shockers
The approach of the new pitching coach - location, location, location - was quite evident in Katie's game. The emphasis was on keeping the ball down with a willingness to miss off the plate. This generated a few walks, a few 3-0 counts. Katie gave up the one run, but I believe it was unearned. Creighton had a runner in scoring position in at least two other innings, but they only five, maybe four hits, none until the fourth.
Sydnee Eck, an Andale product via Butler Juco, pitched the first five innings for the Jays. She doesn't throw particularly hard, but has a lot of movement, especially on her rise ball. The Shocker freshmen had no clue against her, swinging at anything that started letter-high, chasing the pitch as it rose out of the zone.
We started three freshmen I think - catcher, second and short - defensive positions right up the middle. About three others entered the game about the fifth inning, including a new second-short combo. The experienced Shockers had a much better idea about the zone. Macklin Hitz had a homer in the sixth among nine hits by the Shocks. Paige Luellen is back from sitting out last year with a leg injury.
If one or two of the freshmen can hit, the Shockers will be a handful in the Valley (he said after seeing one fall game :) ).

I did want to see Katie pitch under the new guidance of Coach Stefankiewicz.

After falling behind 0-3 in the 1st inning the Shocks came back to lead Tulsa 7-4 heading into the bottom of the 5th with Tulsa being the home team in this game.
Jenni Brooks started but did not have much luck. Kelsey Sterneker came on in relief in the 2nd inning with the Shocks trailing 4-1 and got out of a jam on a line drive double play SS to 1B.
I left Wilkins Stadium to walk over to Koch Arena for the Volleyball match. Does anyone know the final result of this game?
The game got started 30 minutes late and it wasn't exactly a very crisply played game. I couldn't tell for sure from my vantage point but it appeared that a small strike zone may have contribute to that alghtough it did not rally favor either team.

The box scores for yesterday's games are now up on goShockers.com.
Kesley Sterneker gave up her only run in her 4.2 innings of work in the bottom of the 5th inning to reduce the Shocks lead to 7-5 but So. Page Luellen answered with a 2-run homer in the top of the 6th to stretch the lead to 4 at 9-5. Kelsey pitched a scoreless 6th and Ashlynne Neil a scoreless 7th to finish of the game.
An interesting contrast in how the game was approached. Tulsa played only 10 players making no substitutions in the game while the Shocks played 17 players. The Shocks used 16 players in the game with Creighton.
