  • WBB - Ericka Mattingly decommits

    Tony Adame @t_adame
South senior/All-State point guard Ericka Mattingly has decommitted from Wichita State. EM 3 straight 6A titles. Story soon
Interesting that this comes on the same day WSU announces a new assistant coach.

My guess is that it is just a coincidence. Actually, I think Jody has done pretty well retaining the commitments she had in hand prior to the recent negative publicity. It is likely though that the recent negative publicity had an impact on Ericka's decision to decommit, although it seems to me that the kids who commit very early like Ericka did are also more likely to decommit before singing an LOI especially if their games continue to improve and they perhaps draw more attention and interest from other schools.

Being a local kid it could be Ericka was more exposed to the controversy around Jody's program than the out-of-state recruits would have been.

Of some interest is that Ericka's South High classmate, 6-2 Center Kendrian Elliott, who committed to Kansas State a few weeks after Ericka committed to Wichita State in the spring of 2014 has also changed her mind as she decommitted from K-State in May and is now verbally committed to Tulsa.

I believe Ericka and Kendrian are pretty close so it's possible Kendrian's change of heart may have influenced Ericka's change of heart to some degree.

I can't say this is a big surprise with all that has happened. Maybe the surprise was that she ever committed in the first place considering the continuous exodus of local talent.
Where oh where is our T. Boone Pickens.

This really sucks, getting some local talent always makes it a little more fun to watch.
