WBB: Senior Day 2015 vs UNI at 2:00 pm

Okay, the Lady Shocks revenged their only conference loss of the season with a vengeance. Now they have to come back less than 48 hours later and make sure it counts with a game against 3rd place Northern Iowa on Senior Day.
Alex Harden has played 275 of 280 minutes in the past 7 games but she just seems to be getting stronger. All of our starters log big minutes as our bench has not been very good this year. This Ladies have to be getting worn down a bit. However, Jaleesa Chapel has stepped up the last two games with very solid performances. Hopefully, she has figured it out.
Surely anyone who was at the Shocker game yesterday probably still has some adrenaline they need to work off. Come on out to Koch Arena this afternoon and get behind a very deserving team and 3 outstanding seniors.
A win today will finish off the 1st undefeated home season for WBB in school history.

The Shocks struggled some on the offensive side of the ball but were pretty much there usual self on defense and that was enough to carry them to the win.
UNI's game plan was clearly to take Alex Harden away as much as they could and they packed into a zone and focused on keeping tabs on Alex while daring the rest of the Shocks to beat them. Jamillah Bonner took advantage of the strategy as she lead the Shocks with 23 points although she had to put up 23 shots to get those. Alex was the only other player in double figures with 11 points. Michaela Dapprich had 9 points in the 1st half but failed to score in the 2nd half.
The Shocks were cold from 3-point range as they only made 3-15 for 20%. UNI hit 8-26 (30.8%) on 3-pointers.
However, Michaela grabbed 12 rebounds and Jamillah had 8 rebounds as the Shocks out-boared UNI 45 to 35.
The Shocks free throw defense was particularly good as UNI only hit 6-14 (35.3%) for he game while the Shocks knocked down 13-17 (76.5%) from the line.
Kelsey Jacobs battled foul trouble throughout the game and only played 20 minutes before fouling out with about 7 minutes remaining in the game.
Jaleesa Chapel gave the Shocks her 3rd consecutive good outing off the bench with 7 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists/0 turnovers and blocked shot in 30 minutes of play. Brittany Martin and Moriah Dapprich chipped in 6 points and 2 rebounds in a combined 6 minutes of play.
Michaela and Jamillah each played 37 hard minutes and Alex got a break tonight only playing 39 minutes and 47 seconds.
The Shocks lead 29-23 at halftime but UNI opened the 2nd half on a 7-0 run to take a 30-29 lead with 18:36 remaining. However, the Shocks were able restore order and gradually built a 14 point lead at 59-45 with 6:30 remaining (shortly after Kesley fouled out). At the point the offense went into hibernation and UNI sliced the lead to 5 at 59-54 with 36 seconds remaining. 2 FT's by Jalessa, a coast-to-coast drive by Alex resulting in a 3-point play and a final break away layup by Brittany Martin with 2 seconds remaining provided the final margin of 66-54.
So a little bit of an up and down performance by the Lady Shocks today but they got the job done in the end.
Congratulations to the Lady Shocks on their 3rd consecutive MVC regular season championship. However, I'm sure the Lady Shocks want to make this an outright championship and perhaps just as importantly polish up their NCAA resume so 2 more wins on the road next weekend at Evansville and at Indiana State are still important games.

Again thank you to Alex, Kelsey and Jamillah for choosing the Shocker family. Very nice senior day recognition for these 3 ladies and kudos for Shocker fans hanging around after the game for Senior Day activities and for the net cutting ceremony.
Also a very nice and well attended reception for the Lady Shocks by the High Hoops Club in the Champions room. Just a real nice, down to earth bunch of young Ladies representing Shocker Nation.

The Shocks RPI remained at #44 with the home win over #113 UNI.
Next weekend the Shocks play at #246 Evansville and at #157 Indiana State. Not much help there and they certainly can't absorb a loss against those teams even with them being road games.
Most likely we will open MVC Tournament pay against one of the +300 RPI heavyweights populating the bottom of the Valley standings.

Originally posted by shoxlax View PostI was impressed with UNI, they have some good athletes and long range shooters. Could be very tough the next two years.
6-2 Jr. Hannah Schonhardt lead UNI in rebounding as a sophomore while averaging 8.6 PPG. Her injury came in the pre-season and she has missed the entire year.
6-3 Jr. Jen Keitel lead UNI in scoring as a sophomore averaging 13.4 PPG was a close 2nd in rebounding behind Schonhardt. She led the conference in FG %. She played in the first 7 games of this season before suffering her season ending injury.
If both of these ladies return in good shape UNI will indeed be very tough the next two years. Tanya Warren is a pretty solid coach as well.

50% or less?
The Shocks would be at 28-5 in that scenario with only one bad loss on the year (Eastern Washington) and one high quality loss by 3 at Tennessee.
I think we would get in but it is certainly not a slam dunk. Not sure I like the Shocks chance on anything short of your scenario.Last edited by 1972Shocker; March 1, 2015, 11:03 PM.
