The Lady Shocks (20-4, 11-1) begin the home stretch of the Valley conference race with a trip to Illinois this weekend.
Tonight at 7:00 pm the Shocks take on Illinois State (1-23, 1-12) in what should be a warm-up to the main event of the weekend when the Shocks drop down to Carbondale on Sunday for a 2:00 pm contest with perhaps the hottest team in the league Southern Illinois.
Hopefully, the Shocks are sufficiently focused on tonight's task to take care of business against the Valley's worst team. A loss to the Redbirds would quite frankly be a disaster. But I there is a reason they play the games.
The Shocks and Drake are currently deadlocked at the top of the Valley at 11-1. Drake is home this weekend against Evansville (6-7) and Indiana State (6-7).
SIU (15-9, 8-5) and the winner of 6 straight including wins over Drake (11-1) and UNI (8-4) tangles with Missouri State tonight. A triple-overtime in that game would not hurt my feelings one bit.
The Shocks defeated SIU in Wichita 80-61 on January 25th. However, SIU was missing their leading scorer, 5-5 RSo. Rishonda Napier who averages 17.3 PPG for the Salukis. SIU has not lost since that trip to Wichita.
SIU also has a big size advantage inside with 6-2 Jr. post who is a strong, athletic player average a double-double at 14.9 PPG and 11.8 RPG. Azia Washington is an athletic 6-0 forward averaging 10.3 PPG and 7.1 RPG.
The SIU lineup is rounded out with lighting quick Cartaesha Macklin, a 5-6 RJr, who is averaging 9.7 PPG and 4.6 RPG and has improved her assist to turnover ration tremendously under Coach Cindy Stein and with 6-1 Fr G Kylie Giebelhausen who roams the perimeter looking for the 3-point shot (70% of her shots).
SIU is perhaps the one team in the Valley who can not only can match Wichita State's athleticism but they probably exceed it overall.
I am expecting a very, very difficult game with SIU on Sunday.
