Shocker SB at Getterman Classic (Baylor)

The Shockers open the 2015 season at the Getterman Classic hosted by Baylor in Waco. The other two teams at the tournament are Stephen F. Austin and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

Baylor was 2-2 at the WCWS last year. The Bears are picked second behind Oklahoma in the Big 12 this year and are #10 in the Preseason NFCA Top 25. They return six starters and will be led by Heather Stearns in the circle.

The Ladyjacks (from Lumberjacks) of SFA are picked fourth(Coaches) and fifth(SID) in the preseason polls for the twelve-team Southland Conference. First baseman Shalie Day was named to the preseason all-conference team. The returning pitching appears to be a question mark.

The Islanders of TAMU-CC are also members of the Southland Conference. They were picked ninth/tenth in the two preseason polls.

The Shockers open the tournament on Friday against the Islanders at 10am. Their other Friday game is at 3pm against Baylor. They close out the round-robin portion of the tournament against SFA on Saturday at 10am. (GT links provided.) There is a second game on Saturday at either 3pm or 530pm based on the results of the round-robin with 1/4 and 2/3 match-ups. On Sunday, losers play at 930am and winners play at 12pm.

Katie Malone with a complete game 4 hitter with 7 K's and 0 BB. Katie's pitching was certainly the highlight.

Three of the four hits Katie gave up were in the third inning when the Islanders scored their runs. After two Shockers opened the bottom of the third by reaching on errors, three of the Shock's hits followed with RBI singles from Brittany and Paige sandwiched around a run-scoring wild pitch. Cacy and Brittany had doubles elsewhere in the game.

After the 1st two TAM-CC hitter struck out as well. At that point it was infield single, single, error on CF, and single before the inning ended on what was described as a line out to LF. Sounds like Katie may have relaxed a little after the 2 K's leading off the inning and perhaps lost a little focus.

SFA scored 3 in the 6th to pull even with TAM-CC and they are now in the 8th playing with the tiebreaker in effect tied at 3-3.

Mackenzie Wright was 0 for 2 at short with a walk while hitting in the three hole. She had an error in the field. CoachB seems high on some of them - have to wait and see I think. Ali was the only graduate with significant time, although PaigeL is out for the season with a leg injury and Brittany is a DP only while her throwing arm heals. So there are some "windows of opportunity."
