  • Shocker SB v Northern Iowa

This weekend the Shockers, currently atop the MVC with a 9-3 record, host Northern Iowa who resides in second place in the Valley with an 8-3 mark. The games begin at noon on Saturday and Sunday. After playing almost half of the conference season against teams picked to be in the bottom half of the league, the Shocks begin their games against teams picked higher than them, beginning with the Panthers who were a unanimous preseason pick for first place. The Shocker Web site article for the series is here.

In the Valley, Northern Iowa took two of two from Southern Illinois with a game being cancelled, one of three from Illinois State, two of three from Evansville and all three from Indiana State. So their schedule has been split equally between upper-picks and lower-picks. Their overall mark is 21-10. Games against notable teams and common opponents include wins over North Carolina and Texas and losses to Louisiana-Lafayette, North Texas(2) and UCSB(2).

Jamie Fisher has about sixty percent of the Panther starts. She was on the 2013 Valley All-Tournament team and on this year's Preseason All-Conference Team. She has twice been Pitcher of the Week this year. Her ERA is 2.34 with a WHIP of 1.13. Chelsea Ross (4.00 and 1.41) has the rest of the starts.

Rikki Alvarez leads the offense for UNI. She has a BA of .337 and an OPS of 1.007. Gina Brown (BA of .307) and Nicole Fisher (OPS of .979, five homers) are other offensive contributors.

Cacy (.390 and 1.215) and PaigeL (.383 and 1.115) continue to pace the Shocker offense. In the circle, Sloan's marks are now 3.99 and 1.35 while Katie's are 4.63 and 1.87.

Jenni's numbers are 7.16 and 2.28. You wouldn't think that would engender a lot of confidence from the Coaches but the seem to be hanging with Jenni. Jenni did had one very good outing and one pretty poor outing in the 2 mid-week games with OU. It will be interesting to see how HCKB utilizes her pitching this weekend against the league favorites.

It's Shocker Freshman Katie Malone facing off against UNI's Senior All-Conference pitcher Jamie Fisher in Game 1.

The Shocks small-ball their way to big 5-run outburst in the bottom of the 3rd to take a 5-0 lead. Now can Katie keep her focus and protect that lead.

She does the last thing you want to do after your teammates spot you to a big lead and walks the 1st batter she faces in the 4th.

Whoever is keeping the live stats is throwing me a few curves. The leadoff batter for UNI in the 4th walked. The she is shown as out at second by the Shocker 2B unassisted. Can't quite figure that one out. Hopefully, flyingMoose is at the game and will be able to splain that one. In any case, Katie only facers 3 batters in the 4th.

Northern Iowa score an unearned run in the 6th on a throwing error at the end of a double steal and a 2nd run in the top of the 6th on a SOLO homer to pull to within 5-2.

The Shocks got their small-ball game in gear again in the bottom of the 6th loading the bases on a single, walk and bunt single with 2-outs. Brittany Fortner decided enough with the small-ball game and unloaded a grand slam home run to push the Shocks lead to 9-2 after 6 complete.

I guess just to irritate me (and her coaches) Katie walked the 1st batter leading off the 7th.

Katie struggled some finding the strike zone in the 7th and UNI did score 2 unearned runs on an error at 3B by Ali Vandever but she had enough to finish of the complete game 4-hitter as the Shocks take Game 1 by a 9-4 score. Only 1 of UNI's 4 runs was earned. Nice job by the Shocker offense playing small-ball to perfection in the 3rd and 6th with on final big assist from Brittany's slam.

              Game 1 Line Score:
              Panthers...4R, 4H, 0E, 4LOB
Shockers..9R, 10H, 2E, 4 LOB (both of the Shockers errors came with 2-outs and allowed 3 runs to score).

Great start to the series Ladies. Let's clean up those costly errors and keep it going.

In Game 2 it's Sloan Anderson in the circle for the Shocks vs Chelsea Ross for UNI.

Nice game day article by Sully. It speaks of the emphasis in finding hitters for a program, thinking the pitchers will follow. HCKB's comment is a little surprising, since her Emporia State teams always seemed to have solid pitching. As is evident by the time stamp, I am unfortunately not at the park today. :(

That is an interesting approach. Hopefully, improved pitching will follow, although today Katie and Sloan have been pretty solid.

The Lady Shocks keep the whoopin' sticks hot in Game 2 and combine that with a 6-inning, 3-hit shut-out by Sloan Anderson as they win Game 2 in an 8-0 run rule effort.

Very happy for Sloan. Pitching a shout-out with the way the wind was howling today is a great effort, especially when you tend to give up a lot big flies under normal circumstances.

                      Game 2 Line Score:

                      Panthers...0R, 3H, 2E, 2LOB
                      Shockers...8R, 9H, 0E, 3LOB

Terrific work Ladies. Let's keep the bats covered with an electric blanket tonight.

And if you had pitching and not hitting, maybe the described approach would be exactly the opposite. :) But I could be convinced that hitting is easier to project to the next level than pitching.

I could be convinced that maybe our pitching is a little better than I give it credit for. Allowing only 1 earned run in two games in today's conditions against the unanimous pick to win the league shows some nice competitive toughness.
