I think she must have separation anxiety issues.

      Game 3:

Shocks complete the sweep with a 5-inning run rule game

      Shocks..... 10R, 13H, 1E, 5LOB
      Sycamores...1R, 5H, 0E, 5LOB

Katie Malone went the full 5 innings for the Shocks.

9 Shockers contributed hits lead by Liz Broyles' 3-4 with 2 doubles, 2 runs scored and 2 RBI, Paige Luellen at 2-2 (both doubles) plus a walk with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI and Melaine Jaegers who 2-3 with a triple, 2 runs scored and an RBI.

Nice job Ladies. Important to beat the teams you should beat.

Shocks improve to 18-11 overall and 5-1 in Valley play.

        Game 3

        Shockers
        10-1(5) Indiana State

Katie got the start in this game for the Shocks with Lockwood in the circle again for Indiana State.

The Shockers struck early in this game. After Kelli drew a one-out walk, Liz, PaigeL and Brittany doubled to the gaps on three consecutive pitches to score three runs. A ball to PaigeM, and Alvarez was on in relief for the Sycamores. A double play off a soft liner to the second baseman ended the inning.

Indiana State got a run on the board in the second. A single was followed by a sac bunt attempt that resulted in a force out. However, we failed to continue to cover second and the bunter stole the base. A single then scored her.

The Shocks got the run back in the top of the third. Cacy walked, advanced on a ground out and scored on a double by Liz to the left field corner. A walk set up another soft-line-drive double play to end the inning. Just really bad base running. For the Sycamores, an error by the Shocks, sac bunt and single put runners at the corners, but a fly out ended the threat. Shocks, 4-1 after three.

In the Shocker fourth, Melanie's triple to center scored PaigeM who had led off the inning with an infield single. A sac fly by Ali then brought Melanie home.

The Sycamores brought on Humphrey to start the fifth, her third relief appearance of the series. Liz opened the inning with a single and PaigeL's double brought home Layne, a pinch runner. After advancing on a ground out, PaigeL scored on PaigeM's sac fly to deep left. Melanie, Ali and Ashley followed with singles to score another run to bring the score to 9-1, setting up a runs-ahead rule game. A walk to Cacy loaded the bases, and Kelli did not disappoint, dumping a single into left for another run. The Shocks lead 10-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth.

Indiana State had a single and a walk but did not score in the fifth. Shockers take the series, three games to none.

Katie gave up the one run on five hits with two strike outs and no walks. The Shocker had thirteen hits, headed by two doubles by both Liz and PaigeL.

Need to work on reacting on the bases to those soft liners.

Wonder when the last time the Shocks swept a doubleheader with two freshman pitching complete games?

Probably a long time, if ever. It would be rare for two freshmen to start both ends of a doubleheader. But that may say more than we want to know about the state of our pitching.

We are obviously off to a good start with a 5-1 record in conference. But we also need to show we can beat teams in the upper echelons of the conference. Next up are Bradley, picked just above us in seventh, and Evansville, picked ninth, so it will be a few weeks before we really know where we stand vis a vis the higher preseason picks. Kansas comes to town on Wednesday, and they will be a good test.

We need to bank as many wins early on as possible because our Valley schedule obviously is back end loaded and wins are going to become much harder to come by. I still think if we finish at 0.500 in Valley play that will be decent step in the right direction.
