The updated numbers are .310 for batting average with an OPS of .895. The opponent's corresponding numbers are .302 and .833. Looking at pitching stats, our team ERA is 4.34 versus 5.33 with a WHIP of 1.62 versus 1.80.

I know little to nothing about softball (except I know the rover can carry a can of beer) anyway was watching a segment on the sports and it looked like the batter slapped at the ball as she was starting to take off down towards first. Does the batter have to remain in the box before contact or not?

The batter has to be in the box when contact is made. And what limits a rover to just one can of beer??
If you haven't seen a game I suggest you attend. Softball is much more entertaining than baseball ever thought of being and has a lot more action in half the time it takes to play a baseball game. And I like baseball.

To add a bit to Hovpen's post, one foot completely outside the batter's box and on the ground constitutes being outside. A heel on the chalk, and you are inside the batter's box. A foot in the air outside the batter's box, but not yet touching the ground, and you are inside. And the contacted ball can become either fair or foul - in either case, if you are outside the batter's box, you are out.

Another point. If you are touching home plate when you make contact with the ball, you are out even if some part of the foot is still inside the batter's box.

Who are the Shocker players this year that rely heavily on being slappers?

I think only Ashley Johnson, a freshman from Arizona who has played some center field.

Thanks to both for the explanation and I do plan on attending a game or three this year.
