        Shockers 12-9 Florida A&M

Kaitlyn started this game. The Shocks struck for two runs in the first on a double by Cacy, sac bunt, and four consecutive singles by Liz (RBI), Brittany, PaigeM and PaigeL (RBI).

They tallied seven more in the third. Singles by Brittany and PaigeM preceded a two-run triple by PaigeL. After a pitching change, a bunt single by Michelle Dixon, a freshman from Lincoln, scored PaigeL. Melanie reached on an error and after a wild pitch, Layne scored Michelle with a single. Melanie scored on a ground out by Cacy, the first out of the inning. Kelli then drove in Layne with a single. After Kelli stole second, Brittany scored her with yet another single. Thirteen hits for the game for the Shocks at this point. Whew!

In the bottom of the third, two doubles and a single scored two runs for the Rattlers.

After a scoreless top of the fourth, Hunter came on to start the bottom half in relief of Kaitlyn, actually Katie, I think. Single, single, sac fly, single, single, throwing error on a steal and FAMU scored three runs, one earned. 9-5 after four.

In the fifth, two Rattler errors with a single in the mix led to two Shocker runs. Katie came back in to start the bottom of the fifth. An error, run-scoring double and a second error by PaigeM brought Ali in to play third. After a caught stealing, a double, single and single scored three more runs for FAMU with the last out of the inning made at second as the singler tried to advance on the throw to the plate. Two of the three outs made were running the bases. 11-9 after five. Four errors for each team. What an ugly game.

In the sixth, three up, three down for both teams. Amazing.

The Shocks scored an insurance run in the seven when Kelli tripled and scored on a passed ball. Another three-up, three-down Rattler seventh, and this one is over.

The Shockers had sixteen hits, led by four hits including a double and triple by Kelli and three singles by Brittany. PaigeL had three RBI. Katie and Hunter allowed three earned runs between them, while the Shocks had seven earned runs. (NOTE: GT does a sketchy job of calculating earned runs, so take that with a grain of salt.)

UNI has an ace in Jamie Fisher, a passable second pitcher (it appears), but not a third pitcher worth running out there (again, it appears). (But then, neither do we yet.) So depending on the pitching match-ups ...

To be more specific, in the top of the seventh of our game with FAMU, GT said that out-out-triple-passed ball was an unearned run. Well, maybe, you cannot know yet. In this case, the next batter singled making the run earned - it would have scored without the aid of the passed ball. If the next batter had made an out, then yes, the run is unearned. So earned runs may be under-calculated by GT. Knew you would want to know that. :)

              Charleston Southern 3-2 Shockers

Sloan started this game, and we get the #1b pitcher (innings about equal) from the Buccaneers who started #1a yesterday. Sloan went two innings against this team yesterday.

The Shocks scored in the second on a double by PaigeL, sac bunt and single by Melanie.

The Buccaneers tied the game in third with a solo homer, the tenth(!) home run Sloan has given up this year. CSU threatened in the fourth with a lead-off double and sac bunt, but Sloan escaped with no runs scoring.

In the CSU seventh, after a single and sac bunt, guess what? Bingo! A two-run homer.

Ali led off the Shocker seventh with a double and, after a strikeout, was doubled home by Melanie. An infield single by Cacy advanced her to third, and Kelli walked to load the bases. But the Shocks could not push the tying run across as the inning ended with a force at home and a ground out.

This was actually another fine outing by Sloan - you would hope giving up three runs would get a win most days - but the offense is not doing enough. The Shocks had six hits with Melanie getting both RBI.

                Other Saturday games

Northern Iowa 2-3(8) UC Santa Barbara
Jamie Fisher, the Panther ace, held the Gauchos to one hit until the bottom of the seventh when UCSB tied the game with two runs. The Gauchos then won in the eighth without benefit of the ITB. UNI managed only four hits. The teams played last night, and UCSB pitched their #2 today.

UC Santa Barbara 2-5 Florida State
In a matchup of probably the two best pitchers at the tournament (Shelby Wisdom and Lacey Waldrop, respectively) two two-run homers in the second gave the Seminoles all the runs they would need.

                Northern Iowa 9-4 Charleston Southern
CSU was out to an early lead, 4-0 after two, but UNI came storming back for the win, scoring six runs in the fifth.

The Shockers and UNI close out the tournament tomorrow with games against host Florida State.

Florida A&M played just two games in this tournament - against UNI yesterday and us today. That gives the Panthers and the Shockers five games in the tournament with others playing four games.
