  • Shocker SB at Lady Techster Invitational (Louisiana Tech)

The Shockers open their 2014 season in Ruston, Louisiana, at the Lady Techster Invitational hosted by Louisiana Tech.

The Shocks play two games on Friday. The first is scheduled for a 345pm start against the Huskies of Houston Baptist, a member of the Southland Conference. They are a preseason pick for eighth of the ten teams in the conference after finishing ninth last year. However, they do have three players on the Preseason All-Conference team including the Schwirtlich sisters, one of which was the conference Newcomer of the Year and the other, the Freshman of the Year last year.

Then the Shockers follow that game with a contest against Jackson State. The Lady Tigers are members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference and are a pick for second in the Eastern Division of the conference. Their pitcher, Breaa Jamerson, is the Preseason Pitcher of the Year.

The Shockers play two more games on Saturday, the first at 130pm against UT-Martin, members of the Ohio Valley Conference. The Skyhawks are picked to finish third of the six teams in the West Division.

The Shocks follow this game with a match-up with the host team, LA Tech. The Lady Techsters move this year from the WAC to Conference USA where they are preseason pick for eighth among the thirteen teams. One of their pitchers, Anna Cross, was Freshman of the Year in the WAC last year.

The Shockers close out the tournament on Sunday at 9am with a game against the St. Louis Billikens of the Atlantic 10 Conference. They are picked fifth among the ten (naturally) teams.

LA Tech games only - $9.95 for a month's worth, and you have to cancel as it auto-renews. So, no, not particularly useful.

Today's schedule has been modified due to weather. The Shocks now play Jackson State at 430pm, the third and final game of the day. The game against Houston Baptist will not be played.

Scores of the early Friday games:

              UT-Martin 3-8 LA Tech
The Techsters took a 3-0 lead in the first and coasted to this win.

              Houston Baptist 6-7 St. Louis
The Huskies never trailed, taking a 6-4 lead into the bottom of the seventh. But three runs scored for the Billikens on a run-scoring single and what appears to be a wild throw by the catcher to the outfield fence after the play at the plate, a wild throw that scored two more runs.

Sloan has the start - with temps in the 30s. Breea Jamerson has the start for Jackson State and will be a strong test for the Shocks.

After two complete innings, the Shockers lead 1-0. With two outs in the first, a walk to Liz Broyles, a transfer from UMKC, was followed by a triple by Caitlin Williams, a transfer from Emporia State.

Off to the WBB game. I will have to catch up later.

Was hoping to make the 4 hour trip up to support the girls tomorrow, but work had other plans.

                      Go Shox!

                        Jackson State 3-6 Shockers

After the Shockers scored in the first with a walk and a triple, the Lady Tigers countered with three in the third. A walk, error and walk loaded the bases. Then after two strikeouts by Sloan, a wild pitch and a two-run double cleared the bases.

The Shocks got two one-out singles in the fourth inning but could not score. But they broke through in the fifth. After a single and two ground outs, Liz Broyles doubled to score a run, Caitlin Williams singled, Layne Greenlee, out last year with a knee injury, doubled to score one, Paige Luellen singled to score two and the last run of the inning scored on a throwing error.

In the complete game victory, Sloan gave up no earned runs, three hits, two walks and struck out six.

The Shockers are scheduled to play tomorrow at 130pm and 345pm.

                            Earlier Saturday scores:

                            Houston Baptist 24-1(5) Jackson State
Either we should be glad we had our game with HBU cancelled, or more likely, JSU has only one passable pitcher. Six Lady Tiger errors led to fifteen unearned runs for the Huskies.

                            UT-Martin 4-2 Houston Baptist
The Skyhawks scored one in the sixth and two in the top of the seventh to come from behind for the win.

I'm still trying to figure out how that one was canceled when all the others are being played. And of course, trying to find game tracker for todays game which I haven't been able to do yet.
