  • Shocker Rowing Team

I hope it's OK to post this on this on this forum. I wasn't sure where to post this since the Wichita State Rowing Team is a co-ed team. WSU has very strong and proud tradition in rowing and is very competitive every year in this sport. The athletes work very hard training for this sport.

Shocker rowing is an independent varsity sport and competitive athletes who meet the requirements receive an official varsity sport letter for participating in rowing. The program is funded and has two full-time coaches as well as volunteer staff for rowing.

The team will be competing in the Head of Oklahoma Regatta today in OKC. I will try to post some results later on this thread.

OKC has done a tremendous job with their downtown river area and their rowing facilities are world class. If they do what they say they are going to do in the next couple of years it will be an unbelievable river sports area.

Today was the 2013 Kansas Jamboree in Lawrence. Again the Wichita State Rowing team had a good showing and a nice contingent of Shocker fans were there today to support the team on a beautiful day. I will share the results that I have in the next post, but first I want to share with you an incident that I observed.

I was sitting next to where the WSU rowers were between their races. A lady that I assume was a local resident with a KU jacket came up to one of the WSU Crew athletes and I assume on behalf of her children or friends initiated a conversation with this young man. She asked him if they get scholarships for being on the rowing team. He very politely explained that there was a little bit of scholarship money available to the varsity team, but it wasn't much. She then asked him if WSU was a good school. This young man said, "Oh, I absolutely love it. I am from Overland Park and I researched KU, KState and Wichita State, and WSU was the best choice for me."

Even though the WSU rowing team is not going to make the headlines or be on ESPN, these athletes are representing the university and ShockerNation in a very fine and classy way.

I used to really like watching the crew teams compete. May have to take the grandkids (some of them, at least the ones that can focus) and introduce them to a really neat sport.

Tough conditions for rowing today with the wind. I'm waiting for the official results to be posted online, but the Shocker crew did very well. A WSU team medaled in many of the events that they were entered in. Despite the windy conditions, I really enjoyed the day at the Frostbite Regatta on the banks of the Little Arkansas River. #RowAngry
