  • 2013 Shocker Women's Cross Country

Impressive performance today at Nebraska ... http://www.goshockers.com/ViewArticl...CLID=209264807

After losing to K-State at home 2 weeks ago, WSU got some revenge today beating KSU by 16 points. Today's race was 6k (the normal NCAA distance) compared to the 4k they ran at the RAFT. It was a large meet with the Shocks winning the 26-team field of mostly smaller schools. They also easily defeated Nebraska and UNI. This is a young team that got picked 4th in the MVC pre-season poll. Hopefully this shows they will be in the mix later in the year. Good job ladies!

    Cross Country update ...

The Shockers competed in the Bill Dellinger Inv at Oregon Saturday with solid results in the 5k race.
    Shukla 17:44
    Hirsch 17:53
    McLeod 17:55
    Nyandwi 17:59
    Hornbeck 18:33
    Wright 18:42
    Deighan 18:44

As you can see the top 4 girls ran pretty much together and there was a big gap back to their 5th (5 girls score). The Shocker women placed 5th overall, beaten by Oregon, Washington, Boise St, and Portland St - all very good cross country programs. If there are to contend for a top finish at MVC's they will need someone to step up as a 5th runner.

Interesting. I used to run XC with the Wrights.

Savannah improved a bunch last year as a redshirt and Sarah looks like a talented runner as well.

They have a little sister that is more talented than both of them.

The Shocker women competed at Bradley Saturday and saw some of their MVC competition in the process. Here are the results for the MVC teams:
            2. Bradley 81
            4. Wichita St 131
            8. Drake 306
            13. UNI 343
            20. Illinois St "B" 547

            Individually for the Shockers:
            6. Shukla 21:12
            10. Nyandwi 21:24
            16. Hirsch 21:35
            37. Deighan 21:55
            62. McLeod 22:21
            63. Sav. Wright 22:22
            104. Burke 22:42

            In comparison Bradley placed: 1-3-12-29-36-42-65

One of WSU's normal top 7, Emily Hornbeck, didn't run - not sure why but I'm assuming an injury. Bradley is definitely one of the MVC favorites and they were running at home which is an advantage for them. The MVC meet is at Drake. WSU ran decent but of their normal top runners, McLeod, had a rough day and if she was towards the front of our pack, WSU would have been very close to beating Bradley. Shukla, Nyandwi, and Hirsch were all solid and Deighan ran well to be the 4th runner.

You could look at it two ways: The Shocks, on their best day, can run with the top teams in the MVC or their inconsistency from week to week can make you nervous for the one day that really counts.

            Go Shocks!
