  • Shocker SB v Oklahoma State

The Shockers entertain the Cowgirls today in a single game whose start time has been moved to 4pm to avoid incoming weather.

There are only seven teams playing softball in the Big 12 with Oklahoma State picked fifth in the preseason poll. They opened their conference season last weekend, taking two of three from Texas Tech. They are 24-14 overall. Among their results are losses to Florida, UCLA, Nebraska(2) and Tulsa and a win over Stanford, all ranked teams. They also have a 1-0 victory over Northern Iowa.

Their team OPS (not including the weekend games) is .760, led by Tarah Ettinger and Tamara Brown. The Cowgirls have only used two pitchers, Kat Espinosa (ERA of 1.51 and WHIP of 0.89) and Simone Freeman (2.05 and 0.97).

Last year, it took O-State eight innings to beat us in Stillwater. Hopefully, we will have another well-played, tightly-contested game today.

A doubleheader with the Cowgirls is scheduled for Thursday, April 25, beginning at 5pm to make up for the cancellations of the two single games we originally had scheduled with them. I suppose the best thing is to get back out there in the circle and see if adjustments can be made after such a bad night against the Bears.

Oklahoma State has a record of 26-22 with a mark of 4-8 in the Big 12.

Kat Espinosa has an ERA of 2.40 and a WHIP of 1.15, and Simone Freeman's numbers are 2.43 and 1.09. Their offensive leaders are Tarah Ettinger, Samantha Chrisman, Tamara Brown and Tiffany Mikkelson, all with OPS above .800. Ettinger has nine HRs and Chrisman, seven.

OSU takes Game 1 by a 9-4 score.

Sloan continues to grind as she allows 9 earned runs on 17 hits and 2 walks.

Shocks were held to 4 hits, 3 of them solo homers by Erin Carney, Ali Vandever and Laura Vickers.

Interesting. Hunter Stohlmeyer going in Game 2 for the Shocks. Hope Katie is not injured and perhaps just needs a rest. Or maybe HCKB is counting on rain and just wants to get the Freshman some experience.

Hunter throws 8 balls in her first 9 pitches of the game and gives up 3 runs on 2 hits and 3 walks in the 1st.

The outcome to this game would seem to be a fait accompli.

Katie is OK. She comes on in relief of Hunter in the 3rd with the bases loaded and no outs and with the Shocks trailing 6-0.

An E-8 and and E-6 clear the bases making it 9-0 and followed by a single to make the score 10-0 before Katie can get out of the inning.

Shocks have committed 5 errors in 3 innings. 5 of OSU's 10 runs are unearned.

Shocks pick up their 1st hit of the game on a homer by Abby Furstenberg in the 3rd. Their 4th solo homer of the DH.

                  Game 2 Final: Cowgirls 11 - Lady Shocks 3 (6 innings)

Shocks had a great opportunity to do some damage in 5th with only 1 out. However, after the OSU pitcher walked in a run Erin and Hayley struck out to end the inning and leave the bases loaded.

One somewhat bright spot was that Katie went 4 innings allowing only 2 runs (1 earned).

Need to hit some of those with ducks on the pond. Had 3 AB's in the 5th with the bases loaded and could only come up with a walk and 2 stirke outs.

That was great. Had never seen that before.

Nevertheless, to paraphrase the old golf saying: Homer for show, pitch for dough.

I like to have both, but if I have to choose between the two I'll take the pitching. I think HCKB would agree at this point.
