WESTERN KENTUCKY (6-0) vs. WICHITA STATE (2-6) - D-1 Game Only
    Sunday, Dec. 8, 2024 | 1:00 p.m. CT
Wichita, Kan. | Charles Koch Arena
TV: ESPN+ with Shane Dennis and Tracy Anderson
    Radio: GoShockers.com/Listen with Pat Strathman

    SCOUTING THE TOPPERS
Western Kentucky enters the matchup undefeated, starting the season 6-0 against a SOS ranked at 249.
WKU was picked fourth of 10 teams in the Conference USA Preseason Poll.

Western Kentucky's Alexis Mead was selected to the C-USA Preseason Team and leads the Toppers with 14 points per game. She has finished in double figures in each of the last five games and has scored over 1,000 career points. Mead ranks 67th in the NCAA in free throw percentage (.864). The Toppers' Acacia Hayes leads the C-USA in field goal percentage (.615) but did not play in the most recent game. Zsofia Telegdy is the team's leading rebounder, averaging 6.1 rebounds per game with double digit rebounds in two of the last three games.

Western Kentucky comes in averaging 76 points in their 6 D-1 games behind a balanced scoring attack. WKU plays a high pressure style of defense and have turned their D-1 opponents and average of 23.3 times per game including 14.3 steals per game.
The Lady Shocks picked up their 3rd D-1 win the season hand Western Kentucky their first loss of the season 64-59 holding WKU 17 points below their season scoring averaged. (20 points if you don't count the banked in 3 pointer).

I think the Lady Shocks have figured out they are going to have to hang their hats primarily on defense and rebounding to be successful. WKU shot 45.7% from the field incuding 34.6% on 3-pointers. Against the Shocks WKU onl managed 28.4% overall and 25.0% on 3-pointers (which included one banked in 3). WKU missed more shots (53) from the field then the took (51) in their previous game, a 79-60 win over Miami (OH). The Shocks hit 40.0% from the field including 33.3% on 3 pointers, both above their season averages.

    The Shocks outrebounded WKU 52-42.
    .
The Shocks did have mixed success dealing with WKU's pressure defenses turning the ball of 20 times which was a little better than most WKU foes have done so far but only 7 of these turnovers were WKU steals which is a season low for WKU and about half of what they were averaging coming into the game.

WKU made 10-12 free throws but the Shocks could only managed 6-11 as their yo-yo free throw shooting for the season continues.

All-in-all though this was a good win for the Shocks and shows continued improvement.

Salese Blow led the Shocks with 13 points but need 16 FG and 2 FT attempts to get that. She did makes some key baskets at a few critical points in the game. She added 6 rebounds, 3 assists and had only 1 turnover.

Jayla Murray scored 12 points on 6-11 shooting but only grabbed 3 rebounds. She did have 3 turnovers but she also had 2 assists, 1 block and 1 steal.

Taylor Jameson scored 10 points including 3 of 5 3-pointers and only had 2 turnovers as the primary ball handler against WKU's pressing and trapping defenses.

The player of the game for the Shocks was probably Bre'Yon White who had her best game as a Shocker with 12 points on 6-8 shooting while grabbing a game high 11 rebounds. Bre also had 2 assists, one off of an offensive rebound in the 4th quarter that she kicked out to Salese for one of the Shocks 6 made 3-pointers to extend the Shockers lead to 7 after WKU had cut the Shocker lead to 4.

The Shocks took control of the game in the 2nd quarter holding WKU to only 4 points as they finished the final 8 minutes of the half on a 14-2 run to take a 28-19 lead into the locker room. However, WKU did pull to within 2 points at 52-50 on a banked-in 3-pointer with 5 minutes to play. An offensive rebound and put back by Bre White made 54-50 with WKU answering to make it 54-52. Bre responded with a nice pullup jumper in the lane to make it 56-52. Jayla Murray scored after an offensivee rebound to make it 58-52. With agout 1:30 to play KP Parr jumped the passing lane for steal that she took all the way for a layup to give the Shocks a 60-52 lead and restore a little breathing room as the Shock held on for the win.

Aicha Ndour started but only played 4 minutes and Ella Anciaux only played 11 minutes. But this game, despite the relatively low score, was probably a little bit too hectic for them (although Ella did grab 7 rebounds scored 6 points in her 11 minutes). But the Shocks best success game with playing a smaller lineup.

There was some bad news at the end of the game. With about 10 seconds to play Taylor Jameson rolled her ankle and had to be carried off the court. Bre White literally picked Taylor up and carried her off the court. That had no impact on this game but will be a huge loss for the Shocks if Taylor is out for an extended period of time.

Interestingly, the Shocks only suited up 10 of their 15 players for this game with all 10 playing. Jasmine Peaks, Kyleigh Ortiz, Maimouna Sissoko, Carla
Budane and Fiona Diamonde were on the bench but not suited up. Kyleigh I think is injured. Fiona hasn't played this year so may be redshirring plus she is wearing a knee brace on her right knee. Not sure what is going on with Jasmine. Maimouna has played sparingly and I am not sure Carla has played at all.

RH: Wichita State's Goal: Protect the Paint First

Seven games in, Wichita State coach Terry Nooner had watched enough layups. His team needed to dial back its aggressive defense and make opponents work for baskets.

Three games in with a new defensive approach, Nooner wants to see more and more.

The Shockers defeated previously unbeaten Western Kentucky 64-59 on Sunday at Koch Arena by holding the Hilltoppers to a season-low 28.4-percent shooting and far off their 80-point average entering the game.

Wichita State (4-6) started the season pressuring on defense, trapping, denying passes and trying to wear opponents down. Opponents shot 46.7 percent in the first seven games and averaged 75.4 points. The Shockers, trying to speed teams up and force turnovers, found themselves out of position and chasing.

"We were giving up a bunch of layups and a bunch of points in the paint," Nooner said.

After an 85-57 loss to Missouri, the Shockers changed their approach to building a wall around the basket and switching assignments to stay in front of ball-handlers. If an opponent is going to score, it's going to be over a hand.

"Protect the paint first," Nooner said. "We're being more solid, containing penetration and then being able to still build out to shooters."

The results over three games are exactly what Nooner hoped to see.

The Shockers held Prairie View A&M to 27.1 percent shooting and Kansas to 34.9. On Sunday, Western Kentucky (7-1) took a 15-11 lead in the first quarter. In the second, WSU held the Hilltoppers to 1-of-17 shooting to take a 28-19 halftime lead.

"Us being able to switch – anybody can guard anybody on this team," forward Bre'Yon White said. "The versatility throughout the team makes it good for this team."

The Shockers held the Hilltoppers to a season-low 21 baskets and a season-low 59 points. Guard Destiny Salary, who entered the game averaging 11.1 points, finished with six on 1-of-15 shooting. Acacia Hayes, averaging 12.9 points, scored seven on 3-of-12 shooting.

Protecting the paint paid off late in the game when Salary drove toward the basket and found two Shockers in her way. She jumped in the air and threw a pass that guard KP Parr picked off. Her layup gave the Shockers a 60-52 lead.

"As long as we're communicating, I really don't see teams scoring that many points," Parr said.

The new defense also benefits the Shockers by keeping them in good position to box out and rebound. They out-rebounded Western Kentucky 52-42 after beating Kansas on the boards by five and Prairie View A&M by 15.

"I know we're athletic and I know we've got good individual defenders, so if we can just keep people in front of us, then we don't have to help as much and scramble," Nooner said.

I assume this is finals week after which the Shockers unburdened by what has been will have 3 roads games on tab to close out the non-con season. If their new defensive approach holds up and if they can generate enough offense the could win all three of these games: @ Loyola Marymount on December 15th, @ winless Cal State Bakersfield on December 18th and @ Oral Roberts on December 21st.

Cal State Bakersfield should be a slam dunk they are 0-8 against a schedule ranked 269 with a NET ranking of 354. So one of the bottom feeders in D-1 WBB.

Marymount 4-1 in D-1 games has a NET ranking of 125 against schedule ranked 207th while ORU is 5-2 in D-1 games with a NET ranking of 74 vs a SOS ranked 39th. ORU has tough road games against OU and Missouri leading into their game with the Shocks.

If the Shocks, who have improved their NET ranking to 200 against a SOS now ranked 26th can win these 3 games they would get to .500 in the non-con (D-1 games only) after a poor start and I would consider that somewhat of a success considering that poor start.

The will open up AAC play at home vs North Texas on Sunday, December 29th, following the Christmas break.

Things looked pretty bleak to start the season. This has been a very nice turnaround.

If nothing else, you have to give Nooner some props for being willing and open to changing things up. I love the defensive philosophy he tried to start the season with, but if you can't execute, it's an absolute disaster.

              SCOUTING THE LIONS
LMU is on a six-game win streak after dropping its season opener to reigning Mountain West Conference champion, UNLV.

LMU is 4-1 vs D-1 opponents with a schedule ranked at 250th. The 4 wins are against opponets with an average NET ranking of 260.

LMU was picked 10th of 11 teams in the West Coast Conference Preseason Poll.

Three Lions are averaging double figures with 5-6 GS guard Naudia Evans leading the team with 15.6 points per game. Evans also ranks second in the NCAA in assists per game with 7.7, leading the WCC. 6-0 So. forward Maya Hernandez leads the Lions in rebounding with 6.7 per game, blocks with 1.0 per game and steals with 2.3 per game and ranks second in the WCC in field goal percentage (55.1). 5-6 GS guard Brandi Williams is also averaging double figures for the Lions with 12.6 points per game.

I haven't seen a WarrenNolan.com prediction yet with a Confidence level other than Low. Perhap that is due to early season small sample sizes.

The Shocks who are coming off their 3 best performances of the season should, at least on paper, have a shot at this one. Injuries may have an impact on the Shockers chances in this win. By far the biggest is the ankle sprain suffered by Taylor Jameson with 10 seconds left in the Shocks most recent game against Western Kentucky. Coach Nooner made no mention of of Taylor in his Monday radio show. In addition, the Shocks had 5 players on the bench against WKU who did not suit up. The most significant of those being guard Jasmine Peaks. I am assuming an injury but am not certain about that. If Taylor can't go Jasmine along with KP Parr would be the usual suspects to handle the point guard duties.

If both Taylor and Jasmine can't go I guess Princess Anderson would be the nest most likely to fill in. Kyleigh Ortiz another of the injured plays has not played since her injury in 1 minute of play in the season opener. I suppose, Coach Nooner could also press Salese Blow into point guard duty if needed.

I guess will find out what's what at game time on Sunday.

The Shocks of to good start leading LMU 22-13 after one quarter although the did have a 22-9 lead with around 2:20 left in the quarter and missed their last 5 shots, 4 of which were 3 point attempts which is not exactly a strength of this team.

The Shocks finish of what may be their best half of the season outscoring LMU 18-10 in the 2nd quarter to take a 40-23 lead into the locker room at the half.

The Shocks shot 50% from the field including 4-10 from three led by Salese Blow with 9 points and Princess Anderson with 8 points. Perhaps more impressively all 11 Shockers who saw the court scored. LMU only shooting 29% from the field including 11% on three pointers.

While LMU only committed 6 turnovers the Shockers only turned it over 3 times (for a team averaging 18 turnovers per game coming in).

Now the Shocks need to show they can react to whatever adjustments LMU makes and keep the pedal to the metal. Hopefully, the stellar defense continues.

The Shocks extended their lead to 25 at 50-25 4 minutes into the 2nd half and apparently decided the game was over. LMU outscored the Shocks 16-5 over the final 6 minutes of the 3rd quarter to give them selves a chance trailing 55-41 heading into the final quarter.

Not the strongest finish for the Shocks losing the final 16 minutes 18-31 but they had built a good enough cushion to walk a way with a double digit won on the road against a team that was a slight favorite.

The Shocks shot 24-59 (46%)/6-17 (35%)/8-13 (62%) vs LMU at 23-68 (34%)/6-24 (25/%)/4-5 (80%). The Shocks outrebounded LMU 40-37 and both teams only turned it over 8 times. A season low for the Shocks. LMU game into the game averaging 20 points of turnovers. They only got 4 vs the Shocks.

Solid offensive games from Jayla Murray with 14 points on 7-14 FG plus 6 rebounds and 4 assists with no turnovers, Salese Blow with 14 points on 6-11/2-7 FG plus 4 rebounds and 4 assists also with no turnovers, and 11 points from Princess Anderson on 4-6/3-3 FG off the bench.

Ornella Niankan had a solid game defensively and while she only made 1-6 FGs she contributed 9 points as she was 7-8 from the the free throw line (with here teammates only hitting 1-5 from the line) plus 6 rebounds and 4 assists with only 1 turnover.

The Shocks continue to use defense as their calling card holding LMU to a season low 56 points.

Next up for the Shocks is a trip to 0-10 Cal State Bakersfield and their net ranking of 355 out of 362 D-1 WBB teams on Wednesday. That should set the Shocks up with a chance to finish the non-con at 6-6 in D-1 games at ORU on December 21st. ORU lost by 40 points (54-94 today at OU). The Shocks lost to OU by 30 (49-79) earlier in the season when they weren't playing as well as the are know. ORU plays at Missouri on Wednesday. The Shocks lost by 28 (57-85) earlier this season. I think ORU will be the favorite in that game but the Shocks have shot if they can continue to play fundamentally sound tough defense.
