I doubt if you will see too many Shocker fans make that trip from Wichita. Support for women's basketball at WSU is very tepid at best even for home games.

Beating LSU on the road would be a big upset for the Shocks. Looking forward to seeing how the Shocks fare on the road against an SEC team but not expecting a win, especially after last Sunday's exhibition performance against Central Oklahoma. I will be very pleased if the Shocks can play LSU within 12 points (and that's not a prediction either).

Popped into practice briefly. Wow Jody is one unhappy coach. Not sure what the girls are supposed to be doing, but between Jody and Dana getting on them, they sure aren't doing anything right. Again this was brief, so maybe it was just my timing. Hopefully they go into LSU with a positive attitude.

Jody going head-to-head against a former teammate in the LSU game probably makes her more intent to make a good showing than if that was not the case.

Sometimes its best not to watch how the sausage is made.

I have no problem with Jody getting being tough on the players as long as it's about basketball and doesn't get personal or demeaning.

You forgot another important one - if it moves the team forward.

Found the article I always think about when the "coaching style" issue comes up. Gary Smith is a great writer and the entire article is certainly worth reading, but the last few paragraphs of page 7 through much of page 8 is what is germane to my point in the previous post.

Thanks, Moose. I remember that article. Jody needs to find her own identity. She is not Pat Summit no more than I was John Wooden when I coached. I like tough, hard nosed coaching. I do think sometimes HCJA beats her team down and then forgets to pick them up. Let's hope for a great game against LSU

I think OTWHC is right. Jody has to be herself and develop her own, unique coaching style, but at this stage in her career you would have to think she is a work-in-progress as a Coach.

I don't know if any of you have listened to Brent Kemnitz' CD: Pitching - The Mental Game but I like a lot of Brent's philosophies. One in particular I liked was his positive-negative-positive approach in dealing with his pitchers. He starts with a positive comment, then takes care of the negative stuff, then finishes with a positive comment. The first positive comment will hopefully make the player more likely to tune in to what criticism you are about to make and the final positive will encourage them take the criticism to heart and to know you are still on their side. Sounds pretty basic, but probably harder to implement than it sounds when you are unhappy as a coach.

Exactly how Coach Wooden did it and the negative never had a foul word, though he was very, very stern. Just heard Ali decker is out with a knee, Nicole out with a knee, but might play. Down to 10 players going into a very large, aggressive LSU. Salute to our Vets!

Who knows Brent may have co-opted that techinque from the Wizard.

I recall reading many years ago that you new Coach Wooden was very upset when he hurled his sternest epipthet at you which was: "Goodness gracious, sakes alive!"

OTOH, some Coaches would not be able to communicate at all if they were unable to cuss. I have had coaches of both ilk that I have respected and liked as coaches. I just don't think regardless of your personal style in communicating, you can be all negative, all the time. (Not implying that is the case with Jody). Since none of us outside of the team and coaches are privy to everything that goes on than we can't assume Jody is anything other that a stern coach with high expectations. Nothing wrong with that in and of itself.

LSU's roster only goes 10 deep and 4 of those are freshman.

However, their starting lineup presents some distinct challenges for the Shockers including 6-5 Jr Theresa Plaisance and 6-4 Jr Shanece Mckinney. They can also bring 6-4 Fr Derreyal Youngblood off the bench.

With the Shocks seemingly perimeter scoring challenged again this year, getting much in the half court offense will be a big problem for the Shocks. Unlikely that they will be able to make up for that with transition points as I don't expect LSU to turn the ball over at anywhere near the rate our exhibition opponents did (65 in two games).

Hope the Shocks play well but not betting on a win here.
