Tulane Classic - Round 1

Things did not go well for the Lady Shockers today as they find themselves tied for last place with North Carolina A&T at 31-under par, 8 strokes behind the next lowest spot and 28 strokes behind leader Notre Dame. Fellow AAC members Memphis and Tulane are 15-over and 17-over, respectively.

Kate Tilma (78, +6), Mackenzie Wilson (78, +6) and Lauren Thiele (78,+6) "led" the Shockers and Sarah Lawson had the Shocks only birdie on the day on the par 3, 17th hole to salvage a 13-over par 85. Even if Sarah had matched her teammates 78's, the Shockers would still have in 16th place in the 17 team field.

Brooklyn Benn had the throw away score at 14-over 86. She made the turn in 8-over par but was able to par 7 of the final 9 holes. Unfortunately, she had triple bogeys on the other 2 holes.

None of the Shockers are in the top half of the individual leaderboard.

Tulane Classic - Round 2

The Shocks ere a little bit better in Round 2 although on a relative basis they lost a little ground. The finished round 2 at 24-over par and are now alone 17th (last place) at 55-over for the tournament, 6 shot behind North Carolina A&T.

Mizzou has moved into the lead at 13-over with Colorado State close behind at 15-over.

Tulane is in 5th place at 24-over and Memphis is in 12th place at 38-over par.

Kate Tilma (76, +4), Brooklyn Benn (78, +6), Mackenzie Wilson (79, +7) and Lauren Thiele (79, +7) were the scoring marks for he Shocks.

Sarah Lawson had the throw away score at 10-over 82.

Tulane Classic - Round 3

The Shockers were a bit better in Round 3 coming in at 19-over 307 which, combined with poor play from Princeton and North Carolina A&T allowed the Shocks to move up from 17th to 15th at 74-over for the Tournament.. Tulane was 5th at 33-over and Memphis was 8th at 46-over as the Shocks still seem to be a long way from being competitive in the AAC.

The one bright spot for the Shockers was the even-par 72 recorded by Mackenzie Wilson today. Kate Tilma finished up with a 77 while Lauren Thiele and Sarah Lawson both came in at 79.

Broolyn Been had today' throw away score at 80.

Mackenzie ended up in a 4-way tie for 40th on the individual leaderboard. Kate Tilma was in a 6-way tie for 47th.

Women’s Golf Wraps Up Play at Red Rocks Invitational

The Wichita State women's golf team finished up their third tournament of the spring season in the Red Rocks Invitational on Sunday afternoon finishing 14th in the 20 tream mid-major field. Host Northern Arizona and Seattle shared the team trophy with a score of 881, 17 strokes over par.

For some reason Mackenzie Wilson seems to be struggling a little bit so far this spring compared to last year.

The Shocker women's golf team will conclude their spring regular season in the ORU Spring Invitational, beginning on April 8th and 9tj at The Club at Indian Springs.

Monday - Round 1

The Shocks finish round 1 with an 18-over par team score putting then in 10th place in the 15 team field 11 strokes behind the leader UT Arlington.

Kate Tilma shot 74 (+2), Lauren Thiele 75 (+3), Brooklyn Benn 78 (+6), and Madison Slayton 79 (+7). Mackenzie Wilson had that thowaway score at 8-over 80.

Not sure what is going on with Mackenzie Wilson this season. Seems like she has taken a step backwards as a sophomore.

The big news of the round, however, may have been Incarnate Word. The were only playing with 4 players but it appears the solar eclipse must have really rattled them as they records a team score of 77 (+5) + 109 (+37) + 109 (+37) + 123 (+51) = 418 (+130). I don't know if there is a story behind that but can't say I have ever seen anything close to that at this level.

Monday - Round 2

The Shocks came in at 22-over par in round 2 putting them at 40-over par for the tournament while maintaining a 10th place position. Abilene Christian leads at 13-over par.

Brooklyn Benn and Madison Slayton both carded 5-over par 77's while Lauren Thiele and Mackenzie Wilson both finished at 6-over par 78. Kate Tilma had the throw away score at 7-over 79.

Incarnate Word improved its round 1 score from 130-over par to 129-over par in round 2. I looked around the interweb a little but didn't really found out what might be going on there. Their 4 players include 1 senior who appears to be a solid player and 3 freshman who play like they may not have played golf before. The Senior is 8-over after 2 rounds while the 3 freshman are 251-over par with the stroke average per round at about 114.

Tuesday - Round 3

The Shocks put together their low round of the tournament with an 11-under par 299 to close out in a tie for 9th place with Drake at 51-over which was 29 strokes behind the winner, Abllene Christian.

Mackenzie got it today with a 3-bogey, 3-birdie even par 72, followed by Kate (75, +3), and Lauren and Madison (both at 76, +4). Brooklyn had the high score on the round at 6-over 78.

None of the Shocks finished in the top 25 on the individual leaderboard.

And, bless their hearts, Incarnate Word finished with their worst round at 153-over despite their senior shooting a 1-over par 73 as they finished the tournament at 412-over par. While I kind of feel for them (I think) not sure it would have been very much fun to be paired with them plus it would probably be quite distracting. Perhaps they played without being paired with other teams.

When you put it that way, yikes!

Perhaps not unusual for the Northern most team and perhaps one of the youngest teams in the field to be on the Southern end of the rankings.

AAC Championship - Round 1

The Shocks with a pretty decent showing for them in Round 1 putting up a 6-over par 294 on a course that appears susceptible to low scoring. That puts the Shocks in 8 place 4 shots behind FAU and 3 shots ahead of Tulane. SMU leads at 10-under followed by ECU at 9-under and host USF at 7-under.

Brooklyn Benn led the Shocks with an even par 72, Kate Tilma and Lauren Thiele both carded 1-over 73, and Mackenzie Wilson and Madison Slayton both came in at 4-over 76.

Let's hope they can continue to play well enough to beat expectations.

AAC Championship -Round 2

Some good and some not so good in today's 2nd round. The Shocks, who started the round on the 10th hole, posted a 10-over par to put the at 16-over for the tournament which allowed them to hang on to 8th place 6 shots behind North Texas and s shots ahead of Charlotte. Hosts South Florida killed it today with an 11-under total that puts them somewhat comfortably in the lead at 18-under and a 6 shot lead over Tulsa who was 7-under in round 2 and is 12-under for the tournament. SMU is 3rd place at 9-under for the tournament.

On the plus side for the Shockers was Kate Tilma and Lauren Thiele who each posted a 1-under 71 today. Kate was actually at 3-under after 17 holes but unfortunately closed her round with a double bogey.

Unfortunately, none of the other Shocks could get it going today. Mackenzie Wilson carded a 5-over 77 and Madison Slayton rounded out the Shocker scoring with a 7-over 79.

Brooklyn Benn who had the Shockers best score at even par 72 in round 1 could only muster a 8-over 80 in round 2. Brooklyn played her first 9 holes (the back 9) in 7-over as she only managed 2 pars. To her credit she was able to gather herself to play her final nine holes in 1-over with 8 pars and 1 late bogey but the damage had been done.

AAC Championship -Round 2

AAC Championship - Round 3

The Lady Shocks played like the bottom seed in round 3. In fact, their 20-over 308 was the worst team scored of the day and tied for the worst team round in the tournament. The Shocks had built enough of a cushion in the first 2 rounds to hand on to 9th place, 3 shots ahead of Tulane at they finished at 36-over

SMU, Tulsa and USF battled for the championship win with SMU taking it at 21-under for the tournament who rallied from 9-shots behind USF and 3 shots behind Tulsa. Tulsa finished 2nd at 19-under and USF was 3rd at 14-under.

Kate Tilma and Lauren Thiele who had led the Shockers in the first 2 rounds with even par totals of 144 lost it in round 3. Kate shot a 7-over par 79 and Lauren ballooned to an 11-over par 83 which was the throw away round for the the day.

The Shocks best score of the final round was Brooklyn Benn with a 3-over 75. Madison Slayton came in at 4-over 76 and Mackenzie Wilson at 6-over 78.

Brooklyn was 1-under but finished bogey, par, bogey, double bogey

Kate and Lauren just did not have it today, Kate had 8 bogeys and 1 birdie in her 7-over round and Lauren had 11 bogies and no birdies in her round.

The lack of consistency and quality depth has plagued the Shockers for quite some time. On a positive note So. Kate shows that she has the ability to be a solid player. So. Mackenzie is solid but did not show much, if any, improvement as a sophomore. The two freshmen, Lauren and Brooklyn, actually showed a decent amount of improvement during the course of the year I think.

Not sure what was behind the loss of Takahashi and Currier mentioned in my previous post.

Fortunately, the performance of the golf teams has very little bearing on the finances of the athletic department. The teams do hold up their end of the bargain in the class room and do represent WSU and the community well.
