AAC Indoor Championships - Final Team Scores

    Women’s Teams Scores

    1. Charlotte – 107
    2. Rice – 105
    3. South Florida – 75
    4. Tulsa – 57
    5. Wichita State – 48.5
    6. SMU – 48
    7. East Carolina – 47
    8. Tulane – 44
    9. North Texas – 35
    10. Memphis – 34
    11. UTSA – 31
    12. Temple 21.5
    13. Florida Atlantic – 8
    14. UAB - 2

The Lady Shocks underperformed my estimated total score but did finish 5th as predicted by the Shocker coaches thanks to the 1 final point they eeked out in the 4x400 relay.

As predicted two newbies, Charlotte and Rice battle to the very end with Rice leading 103 to 99 heading into the final event, the 4x400 relay. Charlotte finished second for 8 points and Rice finished 7th for 2 points as Charlotte was able to edge ahead of Rice by the final 2 point margin.
Destiny Masters earned the Women's Most Valuable Female Performer Award scoring 21 points for the Shocks. 10 in the high jump, 8 in the pentathlon, 2 in the long jump and 1 in the 60m hurdles.

Destiny won All-Conference Honors in the pentathlon and the high jump and Farrah Miller won All-Conference Honors in the 800m run.

Destiny Masters tying the school record with a leap of 6-1.25 in winning the AAC High Jump. I think she really wanted that one.

Looks like Destiny actually had a little bit of room to spare on that jump.

Destiny currently sits at #9 in the pentathlon which as far as I know should get her into the NCAA Championships.

The above long jump move Destiny into 11th place nationally in the high jump. She will go to the NCAA West Region Preliminaries with a chance to earn her way into the NCAA Championships in the high jump as well.

Destiny has been an amazing success story and she's come such a long way from her HS days to where she is now; one of the best to ever do it at Wichita State and a future Shocker Hall of Famer!

Masters Qualifies for NCAA Indoor Championships

Destiny Masters advanced to the NCAA Indoor Championships in the high jump and pentathlon, the NCAA announced Tuesday evening.

The junior from El Dorado, Kan. is the first female Shocker since Breanne Borman and Nikki Larch-Miller in 2017 to qualify to the NCAA Indoor Championships and is the 18th female Shocker overall to advance.

The top 16 athletes on the NCAA performance list in each event earn a spot at the championship meet. Masters ranks ninth in the nation in the pentathlon with her school record mark of 4,211 points and ties for 11th in the nation in the high jump, clearing 1.86m/6'1.25" to win the American Athletic Conference title and tie the Wichita State record on Feb. 24.

She joins Borman (2016, 17), Larch-Miller (2017), Tanya Friesen (2013) and Koya Webb (2004) as the fifth Shocker to advance in the pentathlon and is the third-ever female to make it in the high jump after J'Lynn Ledesma (2013) and Connie Long (1986, 89).

Masters is one of four female athletes in Wichita State history to qualify to the NCAA Indoor Championships in multiple events in the same year, joining Aliphine Tuliamuk (2012, 13: 3,000 meters/5,000 meters), Desiraye Osburn (2006: mile/3,000 meters) and Ineta Radevica (2002: long jump/triple jump).

The NCAA Indoor Championship pentathlon will take place on Friday, March 8, beginning at 8:50 a.m. CT, and the high jump will be contested the following day at noon CT in Boston, Mass.

There are only 16 athletes selected for each event (except for relays) and First Team All-America status is awarded to finishers 1-8 in each event and Second Team All-America status is awarded to finishers 9-16 in each event. Accordingly, Destiny will earn at least 2nd-Team All-American honors in both the pentathlon and in the high jump to go along with her 2nd team All-American honor in the high jump in last year's NCAA Outdoor Championships.

It will be tough, but not impossible, for Destiny to earn First Team All-America honors. She will need to be at the very top of her game in the high jump and in the 5 pentathlon events (60m hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump and 800m run) to make the happen.

Good luck Destiny. Hopefully, this meet lives up to your name for you.

                  NCAA Indoor Pentathlon Championship:

60m Hurdles: Destiny with a nice start finishing 3rd with a new PB of 8.32 seconds to open her scoring with 1,057 points.

High Jump: Destiny clears 6-.05 to win the high jump portion of the pentathlon adding 1,029 points to her total giving her 2,086 points after 2 events and putting Destiny in the top spot. However, keep in mind these two events are by far Destiny's strongest events in her arsenal. Destiny was the only competitor to clear 6' and I think that may be the fist time she as cleared 6' in a pentathlon competition. Rice's Eliza Kraule, who won the AAC Pentathlon over Destiny two weeks go is currently in 2nd trailing Destiny by 142 points.

The challenge for Destiny will now be to max out her scores in the final three events. I have no expectations that Destiny can win the pentathlon but she has positioned herself about has well as she could for a shot at a Top 8 finish and 1st Team All-American Honors.

Shot Put: Generally not a strong event for multi-event athletes and that holds true for Destiny. Destiny's PB is 12.47m/40'11" and she needs to challenge that. Coming in that PB ranks 7th in the field of 16. Destiny's first attempt is 36-2.75. Now that she has a mark on the books she needs to go for it on her final 2 attempts. Destiny is in 11th in this event after 1 attempt. Destiny is unable to improve on her mark with her 2nd attempt. Badly needs a good effort on her final attempt. On her 3rd attempt Destiny puts it 38-1.25. That will help although she will lose quite a bit of ground to the field after this event as she finished tied for the 10th best mark. She sits at 2,721 points after 3 events that is tightly bunched at the top of the leaderboard.

Long Jump: Destiny's PB in this event is 5.78m/19.75. Destiny's PB is 9th best in the field. However, this seems to be one of Destiny's less consistent events and its one that is very easy to foul on. So she needs a really good jump on her first of three attempts so that she can really go for on her final 2 attempts. The long jump is being conducted in 2 flights. Destiny is in flight 1. Destiny fouled on her 1st attempt. She may have to play it a little safe on her 2nd attempt to make sure she gets a mark on the books. On her 2nd attempt Destiny jumps 19-.05 which is okay. Needs a big jump on her final attempt. Clutch final jump by Destiny as she sets a new PR jumping 19-10.75 which 8th best in a strong long jump field. Heading into the final event Destiny is still holding on to 2nd with the top of the leaderboard getting even tighter.

800m Run: An event Destiny hates and, to an extent, fears. Her PB is 2:30.42. She easily has the slowest 800 time in the field. This event is truly her achilles heel but perhaps this strong field can pull her along to allow her to set a new PB. I have no idea what she will need to run to hang on for a Top 8 finish. Hopefully, she can steel herself for the hurting legs and burning lungs to put up a new PB in this event. Schedule to start at 2:40 CT. Looks like all 15 competitors remaining will be on the track at the same time. The bad news is Destiny finished 14th. However, the good news is Destiny set a new PB at 2:25.62 as she finished the pentathlon with a new Wichita State record of 4,338 points to finish 6th in the nation and to earn 1st Team All-America honors.

Congratulations Destiny. You've come a long way from Blue Stem High School. That was a damn good effort. Setting 3 PB's in the 5 events.

Now let's hope Destiny is flying high tomorrow in the open high jump.

Destiny back to work today in the open high jump. Destiny tied 3 otther jumpers for 9th place clearing 6-0.75 but finished 12 based on number of misses. Destiny cleared this height on her 3rd and final attempt.

Rachel Glenn of Arkansas set a new PB, NCAA Indoor Championship record and tied the NCAA record clearing 6-6.75 to win the event. Lamara Distin of Texax A&M who set the NCAA reccord that Glenn tied early this year finished 2nd with a clearance of 6-5.5.

Outstanding finish to the indoor season for Destiny as she adds 2nd Team All-American honors in the high jump to her 1st Team All-American honors in the Pentathlon.
