  • USBC Intercollegiate Team Bowling Championship

The Lady Shocks qualified as the #1 seed and then were promptly dumped 4-2 in their first match by #16 West Texas to fall into the Loser's Bracket in the double elimination tournament.

The knocked off #8 seed Kutztown 4-1 Thursday afternnon to advance against #12 seed Newman University this morning. They defeated Newman 4-0 to stay alive.

Up next is #5 Maryland-Eastern Shore who eliminated West Texas.

Maryland-Eastern Shore is currently up 2-1 (193-191, 205-215. 243-168). Clearly MD-ES has the momentum after that beatdown in Game 3. Hopefully, the Ladies can snap back from that.

Lady Shocks pull even at 2-2 in their match against MD-ES with a close 174-171 win in Game 4.

MD-ES jumps back on top 3-2 with a 192-182 win. Lady Shocks now with their backs against the wall. They must win the next two games or be eliminated.

The Shocks tie it back up 3-3 with a dominating 253-177 performance in game 6. On to a match deciding game 7. Hopefully, the Shocks figured some things out that will carryover to game 7.

The Lady Shocks complete the comeback with a solid 221-197 win in Game 7 to survive and advance to face #4 Midland in Round 5.

FWIW, this is the format they use in the team championships:

      Baker
      - The Baker tournament format is unique. Typically found in Collegiate tournaments, the Baker format comprises of a team of bowlers (usually 5), who rotate bowling in each frame in a game. This is much different than a normal team event in which each bowler will bowl for their own individual scores. In a Baker format a higher emphasis is put on bowling as a team as each shot is absolutely crucial to your team's success.

The teams bowled 24 games to determine seedings. Here are those scores: http://scores.bowl.com/2012-itc/2012_itc_round_1-24.pdf

Then they are seeded into two 8-team double elimination brackets where they play best 4 of 7 Baker games per match. The finals on Saturday, which are televised, are a best 2 of 3 Baker match.

Lady Shocks in deep trouble as they trails Midland 3-1 in Round 5.

The must win 3 consecutive games over Midland or the show is over for them.

Update: No additional scores posted by they show Midland has advanced to the Semi-finals which would indicate that the Lady Shocks were eliminated.

The Lady Shocks finish tied for 5th place. Just a tough way to go when you fall into the loser's bracket with a 1st round loss.

That first round loss was very unexpected. Through the 24 seeding games, the Lady Shocks averaged over 206 per game compared to the 2nd seed which had a 195 average, and their 16th seed opponent which averaged only 173 per game. The Ladies may have been a little over confident dropping the first 3 games of the best of 7 and couldn't pull it back together. Great season never the less.

While the Lady Shocks did not make the semifinals of the team championship, Sophomore Jazreel Tan, the female Amateur Bowler of the Year, is in the Semi-finals of the Intercollegiate singles championship. The singles semis and final are also being played today.

              Good luck Jaz.

Jaz loses 207-226 in the semi-finals. No hardware for the Shocker Ladies this year. Good effort though.

She didn't make it to the finals, but at least a local player, Georgia Drewes, won the title. Georgia went to Bishop Carroll high school.

Newman's Georgia Drewes overcame the pressure of bowling under the lights of national television to win the USBC National Women's Singles Championship Saturday at the 2012 United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Singles Championships in Lincoln, Neb.
Oh, and with a last name of Wiggins (before she got married), maybe she should have gone to WSU.
