  • Shocker SB v Tulsa

The Shockers meet Tulsa for a single game at 6pm Wednesday.

The Golden Hurricane (24-7, 8-1) are currently in first place in the nine-team C-USA. They have had three different hitters claim Hitter of the Week honors and two different pitchers be Pitcher of the Week. They have eight hitters at .300 or better and two over .400. Their two primary pitchers both have ERAs uner 3.00. Their team SLOB is .874 with an opponents' mark of .667. The Shocker equivalents are .614 and .990.

Tulsa have defeated North Texas and Loyola of Chicago twice each and lost to Oklahoma State.

This game clearly will be a challenge, perhaps even a challenge to get it in.

Game notes from the Shockers site and the Tulsa site.

I cannot watch the game today, but I sure hope that the coach coaches the game to win. The schedule may be front loaded. I have seen near wins swept away, too many times by home runs. After the tough losses last weekend, I noted that Sloan is 3-17 all season, 0-6 in conference, 97.2 innings pitched. 18 starts/21 appearances. Has given up 29 home runs. Cannot find a player anywhere else in D-1 softball getting so much playing time with stats like that.

Sloan's stats are not pretty, especially the 29 home runs allowed.

On the other hand I'm not sure Sloan is that worthy of being singled out considering she has the lowest ERA on the Shocker staff at 5.30, not that that is very good. Katie has an ERA of 5.91 and Katherine has an ERA of 6.39.

We knew coming into the year that it would be a real challenge and we knew that our pitch-to-contact pitching staff was not exactly our strong suit.

It is what it is though and, so far, no one on our pitching staff has been able to show they can consistently get the opposition out. Unfortunately, we may have a staff full of one-time through the lineup middle relief type pitchers.

Tulsa, a least on paper, does not look like a good match-up for the Lady Shocks.

And this eventually gets you to the Shockers Live Stats, but I am still unable to find them via the Shocker Web site. Can anyone help or are you having the same problem I am?

Sloan gets the start in the circle. Still no Sammie or Layne in the starting lineup.

Not looking very promising right now. Doubt that they get this in.

Live stats link (clickable image) is in the upper left hand corner of the goshockers.com home page within the "Shocker Quick Links" box. 1st image on your left - looks like a mini bar graph.

Not surprisingly the game has been cancelled.

No wonder I could not find it - and was never going to find it. I have softball and volleyball and women's basketball pages bookmarked, but I never go to the home page. Plus that "approach" is so incredibly dumb - not my opinion this time, just a fact. On the "nearby" schedule on the softball page, there is a Coverage heading but never anything beneath it. There are other places on the softball page and its "underpages" where a LiveStats link could be placed - at least other schools easily find a place. Oh well. Thanks again for the info.

And we were going to get Tulsa's #3. Oh well again.

Seriously I don't know any coach who doesn't coach to win. Coach B is a VERY competetive person who hates to lose. If one of the other pitchers was better, that person would be pitching more. The fact is that although Sloan is not a typical #1 pitcher at this level, she is the best that we have. So she will take the lumps trying to pitch a team to victory every day without the help of several of the teams top hitters in the lineup due to injuries. As the great Secretary of Defense Don Rumsfeld once said, "You go to battle with the weapons you have, not the ones you wish you had." Ok so maybe he didn't say it exactly like that, but you get the point.
