  • Women's Outdoor Track and Field Thread

Last week the Shocker women heptathletes officially opened the 2012 outdoor season but this week the rest of the team will get into action at Arkansas and Emporia State. Should be a meet with some great competition and good weather - the Arkansas track is generally regarded as very fast as well! After the narrow loss to Missouri State indoor I'm sure these ladies have been training hard and ready to avenge that defeat. BTW Missouri State is competing in this meet as well. Go Shocks!

Report on the Shockers results at Arkansas and Emporia State.

    http://www.goshockers.com/ViewArticl...CLID=205406954\

Natalie Morerod set the WSU record in the women's 400-meter hurdles at John McDonnell Field in Fayetteville, Ark. Saturday. She finished second in the event, but her time of 59.12 broke the Wichita State record of 59.14 set in 2002 by Natasha Foreman. Morerod's time ranked tied for 10th-fastest in the nation this season Saturday night.
Really nice when you have a sophomore putting up school record numbers and top 10 national numbers. Kudos to Natalie.

A couple of Shocker coach and staff member did alright also:
Wichita State academic coordinator and former Shocker student-athlete Chandra Andrews took the top spot in the women's hammer (198-4), while WSU assistant coach John Hetzendorf won the men's javelin (220-6). Andrews and Hetzendorf competed unattached Saturday.

A year or so ago I watched Chandra working out on the south side of Koch Arena before a basketball game. Very impressive, strong young woman.

The Shocker track team heads west this week. Most to Albuquerque and a few to Stanford:

WICHITA, Kan. ? Wichita State track & field student-athletes will split up this weekend to compete in the New Mexico Don Kirby Tailwind Invitational at Albuquerque, N.M., and the Stanford Invitational at Palo Alto, Calif.

Natalie Morerod was certainly excited about her PR and WSU record 400-meter performance in Arkansas and said she surprised her self with her storng finish of the final 200.

Not sure what there is not to like about the Shocker track program right now.

More quality performances by Shocker athletes at the prestigious Standord Invitaional:

STANFORD, Calif. -- Wichita State junior Aliphine Tuliamuk broke Missouri Valley Conference and Wichita State outdoor school records with her performance late Friday night in the women's 10,000 meters at the Stanford Invitational.

Aliphine Tuliamuk finished fifth overall in section one of the event with a time of 32:39.35. She broke Tonya Nero's conference and school-record 10K time of 33:11.71, which Nero set as a senior last season at the 2011 Stanford Invitational, by 22 seconds. Tuliamuk's time ranks among the top-five women's 10K times in the nation this season.

Tonya's little sister, Shocker senior Scarla Nero competed in section two of the women's 10K Friday, and finished with a personal best 35:07.18. She finished 33rd in her section, but her time moved her up to fourth on the Shockers' all-time top-10 list in the event.

Shocks continue their good spring work at New Mexico: http://www.goshockers.com/ViewArticl...DB_OEM_ID=7500

Natalie Morerod, in particular, continues her storng spring winning the women's 100-meter hurdles in 13.69 -- a personal best time that moved her up to fourth on the Shockers' all-time top-10 list in the event. She also finished second in the 400-meter hurdles (59.56) Saturday after setting the school record last week in the 400-meter hurdles with her time of 59.12 at Arkansas.
The Shockers' 4x400-meter women's relay team of Kristina Taylor, Morerod, Kiara Moore and Kiara Giles won the event in 3:48.22.

J'Lynn Ledesma finished second in the women's high jump with a mark of 5-9 ¾ -- moving her into a tie for fourth on WSU's top-10 list.

Another ouststanding race by Aliphine: http://www.goshockers.com/ViewArticl...DB_OEM_ID=7500

Aliphine smashed her own Missouri Valley Conference and school records in the outdoor women's 5,000 meters Friday night at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, CA beaingt her 5K conference and school record by more than 25 seconds, finishing the event Friday in 15:26.07. She finished seventh overall in the invitational elite 5K race with one of the nation's top collegiate times this season.
Tuliamuk set outdoor conference and school marks in the 5K last season when she finished in 15:51.37 at the NCAA Finals June 10, 2011. She set the MVC outdoor mark in the 10K earlier this season.

Thought I'd drop by and give my thoughts on the women's outdoor season so far ... it's been a good one!

Gotta start with Aliphine Tuliamuk. She is running at a level never seen before at WSU or the MVC for that matter. She's currently ranked 3rd in the NCAA in the 10k and 4th in the 5k with incredible times of 15:26 and 32:39. The best distance runner in the history of the MVC and she's only a junior. I think it's not any stretch at all to say by the time she graduates (as a 14-time all-American) she will be the best female athlete in WSU history in any sport. Hey folks, she runs twice in the next 3 weeks ON WSU'S CAMPUS. Come watch her run Saturday night or at the MVC meet. You won't be disappointed.

After Aliphine, the Shockers are showing some great depth. You can always count on Audacia Moore to be at the top of the conference in the sprints. Tanya Friesen keeps improving in the heptathlon as well as the hurdles and jumps. Sophomore Natalie Morerod has given the Shocks a major shot in the arm in the hurdles where she ranks #1 in the 400h and #2 in the 100h in the Valley. Danielle Walker has continued her good running in the 800m from indoor. Megan Fuller has broken the school record in the discus twice in the past two weeks. J'Lynn Ledesma has been very steady in the high jump all year long.

This weekend there will be a great meet at Cessna Stadium on Saturday night! The Track-It Buster Invitational brings together some of the top non-BCS teams in the country, most notably Stephen F Austin, who came in and beat the Shocks by a couple points last year. The featured schedule runs from 6-9pm so come out and support this great Shocker team! It's only $3!

                  Shocker Spring Sports Presser #10:

Coach Wise talking about the performances from last weekend in particular Aliphine's oustanding 5K race one of the Top 20 times in the history of the NCAA. She ran 4:58 pace per mile for the 3.1 miles. Runnigs as well or better than anyone in Shocker history. Aliphine will be running this Friday at Cessna Stadium and agains two weeks later at the MVC Championships in Cessna Stadium.

Here is the schedule for this weekends Track-it Buster Invitational: https://admin.xosn.com/fls/7500/pdf/...DB_OEM_ID=7500

The 2011-12 Shocker sports calendar is almost over but not quite. We still have a few Shocker athletes competing in the NCAA track and filed championships.

First and foremost Aliphine Tuliamuk finished 1st in the West Regional 10K at Austin, Texas finishing 15.5 seconds ahead of the the 2nd place finisher and she moves on to the NCAA Championships at Drake.

Aliphine will also be competing in the 5K on Saturday around 8:45 pm.

Tanya Friesen failed to qualify for Drake in the long jump finishing 18th at Austin but she did record a personal best of 19'11.5". Tanya has already qualified for Drake in the pentathlon. Maybe she can squeeze another half inch out of her long jump and hit the 20 foot mark in the pentathlon at Nationals.

Also still alive in Austin regional are:

Senior Danielle Chapman who ran 2:07.82 in the women's 800 meters to finish fourth in her heat and 20th overall in the first round (but 14th fastest time). She advances to run in the event quarterfinals at 7:15 p.m. Friday.

Sophomore Natalie Morerod advanced to Friday's quarterfinals of the women's 400-meter hurdles. She finished 12th overall in the event preliminaries Thursday in 59.28 to qualify to run again at 7:45 p.m. Friday.

Senior Audacia Moore (Wichita Heights) and Junior Shamoya Pruitt (Wichita South) failed to advance in the 100m dash. Audacia is scheduled to also run the 200m dash with the first round is at 8:25 p.m. Friday and the quarterfinals at 7:50 p.m. Saturday. Audacia does have a stress fracture in her foot so how she does may be very well dependent on how her foot is feeling.

Senior Cassie Craig, who won the 2012 MVC title in the women's pole vault with a personal best mark of 13-4 1/2, will participate in the event at 1 p.m. Friday in Austin.

Also yet to compete in Austin are J'Lynn Ledesma (high jump), Courtney Reinke (triple jump) and Megan Fuller (discus).

Shocker senior Cassie Craig was unable to advance in the pole vault as she could only clear 12'4.5" this afternoon which is foot lower than her PR set in winning he MVC pole vaulting championship.

Another Shocker closes out a very good career. Cassie, we thank you and wish you the best.

Natalie Morerod qualifies for Nationals in the 400m hurdles finishing 3rd in her heat with a clocking of 57.88. Congratulations Natalie.

Natalie goes for a double tomorrow in the 100m hurdles, although I believe the 400 is her stronger event.

Audacia Moore failed to get out of the first round of the 200m dash. She was well off of her best time this year which would have easily qualified. I have to believe the stress fracture in her foot is finally catching up to Audacia. I really admire her for battling through that pain this year as she definitely made positive contributions to the team this year despite fighting the injury.

J'Lynn Ledesma finished in a tie for 10th in the high jump with a leap of 5'9.25" which was just good enough for J'Lynn to advance to Drake.

                              Congratulations J'Lynn.
