I don't know when Melissa was signed by Morehead State, if this is the case. No mention on their website and not yet listed on the MSU WBB 2022-23 basket ball roster. However, it has been known for some time that she was not returning to the Shockers' WBB team. Seemed like a nice young lady but her leaving the program was probably not that significant of a move.Originally posted by mjbaker84 View Post
Of course, Morehead State and Wichita State do have some history on the gridiron and hopefully this does turnout to be similar result to the last meeting between the schools in September 1986.

Morehead State’s Adrian Breen threw two touchdown passes in the final 1:54 and then ran for the winning two-point conversion himself with 27 seconds to play.
“I’ve been coaching for 30 years and I have never, ever, ever lost a ball game like this, “ said WSU coach Ron Chismar, whose team fell to 1-2. “… It’s a disgrace.”
One team’s disgrace, though, is another team’s triumph.
“This is the biggest win in the history of Morehead State football,” said MSU coach Bill Baldridge, whose Eagles are 3-0, their best start since 1964. It was the first victory for Morehead State, a Division I-AA, over a Division I-A program.
Perhaps that was just a harbinger of what was to come. The Shockers shut down the football program at the end of that year.
And, yes, I was at that game. As you can see Morehead State doesn't carry fond memories for Shocker fans.

That approach has worked reasonably well for South Florida but not so much for Wichita State. Looks like the first season Morehead State has gone heavily foreign so will have to see how it turns out for them.Comment

I just saw the Melissa news/info on a shocker instagram page, her tagging them and saying she would be there in a few weeks. I figured with the lack of playing time/impact as a freshman she would bounce.Comment

Shockers Reveal 2022-23 Non-Conference Opponents
I think this is a bit of an upgrade from previous years non-conference schedules under HCKA, although home portion of the non-conference schedule is a lot weaker than the away schedule. But overall I think a better schedule to get them prepared for AAC play than in recent years.

League Coaches Pick Shockers to Finish 10th
Wichita State women's basketball has been picked to finish 10th in the American Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, it was announced Wednesday morning.
The Shockers received 32 total votes from the league's coaches, just two behind ninth place pick Cincinnati. South Florida enters the season as the conference favorites - 99 points and nine of the 11 first place votes. Houston, SMU, Tulsa, Tulane and Memphis round out the top five.

This is not at all surprising considering the Shockers are replacing 4 starters as Mariah McCully, Seraphine Bastin, Carla Bremaud and Asia Strong have either exhausted theri eligibility or otherwise moved on.
I thought the Shocks had a chance to outperform their expectations the last two years but that did not happen and now the core of that team is gone.
I also think this year's team has a chance to outperform the above expectations primarily because the expectations are so low.

And here I thought that once UConn left, we'd have an opportunity to challenge in the top 3rd of the conference. Very disappointed in Coach's lack of success given her 1st year here, her UTEP success, JUCO success, bringing her top assistant with her, and "hometown" ties (Oxford). HCKA's first year she inherited a very senior laden team (8 seniors including 3 5th year seniors plus 3 juniors). I think this proved to be more of a curse than a blessing in structuring a more balanced roster thereafter.Originally posted by ShockTalk View PostComment

No question. My point was that how she fared in her first year was somewhat irrelevant as she had none of her players and the vast majority of the playing time and stats from that team were gone at the end of that season. I agree that she has not done a great job in gradually building a sustainable program. Lot's of turnover, especially among her international recruits. Shockers Edge Missouri Southern in Overtime
Wichita State needed five more minutes to pull out a 72-70 exhibition overtime win over Missouri Southern State Tuesday night in Charles Koch Arena. MSSU missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer at the end of OT that would have won the game. The games was tied at 61-all at the end of regulation.
Missouri Southern State is ranked No. 19 in the preseason DII poll and returns an All-American in point guard Lacy Stokes.
The Shockers defeated the Lions, 89-61 in 2021, 80-33 in 2019 and 62-49 in 2018.
Curtessia Dean poured in a game-high 24 points on 10-of-20 shooting to go with six rebounds in her Wichita State debut. Jane Asinde did most of her damage in the first half, finishing with 15 points, 17 rebounds, four assists and four steals. Trajata Colbert added a double-double in 14 points and 11 boards.
The Shockers may have a depth problem. The 5 starters played between 30 and 38 minutes including OT for a total of 163 minutes (72.5% of the total). That is quite a lot especially for an exhibition game. The other 7 players who played combined to shoot 2-16 (12.5% from the field including 0-6 on 3 pointers) and 5-10 from the free throw line with Ella Anciaux going 2-5 from the field and 1-3 from the line in only 6 minutes of playing time. This group had 2 assists vs 7 turnovers. Returner Carla Budane plus newcomers Raissa Nsabua and Daniela Abies did not play. I believe Nsabua is injured.
I guess you can hope this is the women's Augusta State exhibition ( a very good Shocker men's team had trouble with D-II Augusta State in 2016 before winning 73-67) but there are signs this could be a (another) long year especially if injuries or foul problems with the starters come in to play. I find it very difficult to be too optimistic at this point but we will see.

RH: "We’ve Got A Lot Of Work To Do"
The Shockers needed a last-second basket to force overtime, where they didn't lead until 1:32 remained. Missouri Southern missed a three-pointer in the final seconds and the Shockers survived against a team ranked No. 19 in NCAA Division II.
"No question we've got a lot of work to do," Wichita State coach Keitha Adams said. "We're going to take this film and this is going to be great for us to be back in the gym."
The Lions shot poorly (27 of 81) but made 11 three-pointers and grabbed 16 offensive rebounds to score 15 second-chance points. They made 6 of 12 threes in the third quarter to erase Wichita State's 30-20 first-half lead.
Many of those shots came when the Shockers lost track of their assignments and allowed dribble penetration to lead to open shots.
"We've got to get better at defending," Adams said. "Too many drive-bys. Then you're having to help and then you're having to rotate."
"They got way too many offensive rebounds," Adams said. "I'm looking forward to practice. Our boxing out and being more physical team is something we've got to improve on. We let a lot of people drive by us. We were chasing the ball."
The Shockers avoided the upset when Colbert scored on an inbound play called "home run." In 2020, she scored in the final seconds on the same play to beat Temple 72-70.
"We've run this play for years and years," she said. "It's a very good play. I just have to be willing and determined to finish."
In the overtime, Colbert's layup gave the Shockers a 67-65 lead. DJ McCarty made three of four foul shots in the final 23 seconds to hold off the Lions.
Those points allowed the Shockers to leave Koch Arena feeling better about a win and knowing they came through when they had to get a score. That is a better feeling than losing.
"We knew what to dial up," Adams said. "Tonight's a great night for them to go home with confidence about what we do. We executed and look what happened."
So what Coach Adams is really saying is her team played lousy on the defensive end, did not shoot great and needed some very good fortune to escape with an exhibtion win. I guess that is better than losing but not sure about building any confidence.
