The Lady Shocks (2-6 in AAC play) are at last place ECU (1-8) in AAC play this evening. The Shocks beat ECU in Wichita a couple of weeks ago 70-55.

    Quarter 1

Asia, Jane, Carla, Mariah and Nug starting for the Shocks. Bastion will come of the bench again.

Very slow start for the Shocks as they trailed 5-13 with 2:30 remaining in the quarter. The did, however, close the gap to 10-13 at the end of the quarter.

    Quarter 2

The Shocks opened the quarter on a 7-0 run and closed the quarter on an 8-0 run as the pulled away to a 34-21 halftime lead. The Shocks were 4-5 form threes in the quarter. 1 by Carla, 1 by Mariah and 2 by Nug including a 3 from the left wing to close out the half.

    Quarter 3

A really ugly start to the quarter by both teams. 4:15 into the quarter and ECU has outscored the Shocks 3-2.

Rough quarter for the Shocks. The only manage to hit 2-18 shots and their 13-point half-time lead shrinks to 4 points at 42-38.

    Quarter 4

ECU takes their 1st lead since early in the 2nd quarter at 43-42 with 8:20 to play. The teams went back and forth after that. ECU hit 1 of 2 free throws with 30 seconds left tie it at 51-all. On the ensuing possession Nug hit a 3-pointer with 8 seconds left. Looks like the Shocks plan was to file the ECU player who received the inbounds pass but the ECU player caught the ball and immediately went up for a 3-point attempt. She was fouled by Nug (and probably Jane as well). The ECU player hit all 3-free throws to tie at 54-all. The Shocks had one final possession with 6 seconds left. The Shocks tried their play where the run a post from the left elbow around a screen to the right side at the bottom of the lane and make a lob from the side court. Looks like ECU had that scouted and knocked the ball out of bounds with 3 seconds left. The Shocks inbounding from the baseline got the ball into Seraphine breaking down the left side of the lane but her left hook shot was blocked but went right to Carla who left an open 10 footer just short. Overtime coming up.

    Overtime

In the first 3 minutes of OT ECU hit 5-6 free throws and the Shocks went scoreless as ECU took a 59-54 lead. 2 free throw from Seraphine and a 3-pointer from Mariah with 52 seconds left pulled the Shocks even at 59-all. On the ensuing possession ECU missed an open 17 foot jumper from the key but grabbed the offensive rebound and scored to make it 61-59 with 24 seconds remaining. On the Shockers final possession Seraphine went one-on-one and had a pretty good look on lefty layup but left it short. The ball went off ECU with 3.3 seconds to play. The Shocks did get the ball into Seraphine on the right baseline just outside the lane but she was up against ECU's post player and her shot attempt was blocked as time expired, Shocks lose 61-59.

Pretty physical game by both teams and both teams played pretty tough defensively. ECU's 3/4 court press gave the Shocks a lot of problems. The Shocks had 19 turnovers. The Shocks could just not get going offensively in the 2nd half and OT only scoring 25 points over the 25 minutes after halftime.

After shooting 14-24 (58.3%) including 4-7 (57.1%) on treys the Shocks could only manage 5-38 (13.2%) from the field in the 2nd half.

ECU this year is 9-0 in games where they have scored 60 or more and are 0-15 in games when they score under 60.

Nug tied her career high with 12 points on 4-9 shooting overall and 4-6 on treys but she also had 4 turnovers. Seraphine had 7 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists vs 2 turnovers. Asia and Mariah combined for 25 points but needed 25 shots to do it and the also combined for 9 turnovers, 3 by Asia and 6 by Mariah.

Tough loss for the Shocks against the last place Pirates but they simply struggled to score after halftime.
    This, too, is getting old.

100% agree… it’s time. I’ve been very disappointed with the direction of the women’s program. Unfortunately, I’ve lost interest.

Are we going to be looking for a new Women’s Basketball Coach in a few weeks. I think this is year 5 for Keitha.

I totally understand the sentiment. Some real challenges here apparently. Whether or not WSU can come up with the answers remain to be seen.

I did not watch or follow the Lady Shockers game against SMU this afternoon but I see the Shocks did pull out a 58-47 win. Looking at the box score shows the Shock with a nice balanced scoring attack and the difference in the game was the Shocks were 14-17 from the free throw line vs 4-8 for SMU. I will probably catch a replay of the game somtime this weekend.

Very nice 4th quarter going 22-8. SMU came in 5-2 in conference. This was their first conference road loss in 4 games.

I watched the replay but won't give a real detailed report. It wasn't the prettiest game you will ever see. Both teams running hot and cold. More cold than hot for SMU. SMU only scored 13 points combined in the 2nd and 4th quarters. The Shockers only scored 19 combined in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. SMU led 39-36 after closing out the 3rd quarter on an 11-2 run. After SMU scored the first basket of the 4th quarter to extend their lead to 5 at 41-36 it was all Shockers as they outscored SMU 22-6 to close out the game with a 58-47 win. But the game was closer than the final score might suggest. It was a one possession game with with 1 minute to play with the Shocks leading 50-47.

The biggest statistical anomalies in the game were the previously mentioned free throw advantage for the Shocks plus the Shock outrebounded SMU 43-30 including 14-5 on the offensive boards and the Shocks outscored SMU in the paint 30-10. SMU had a slight advantage in FG% hitting 20-53 (37.7%) to 20-58 (34.5%) for the Shocks. The Shocks actually missed quite a few bunnies.

The Shocks had 4 players in double figures. Mariah McCully with 13, Asia Strong with 12, Trajata Colbert with 11 (9 in the 2nd half), and Jane Asinde with 10 (plus 11 rebounds). Trajata only played 16 minutes so she was very productive when she was on the floor.

The Lady Shocks headed to Orlando to take on league leading UCF this evening. UCF is not a real good offensive team but the live and die by their defense and they do play outstanding defense.
I guess if the Shocks are going to get stranded for an extra day or two Orlando is as good a place as any.

The Shocks actually led at halftime 19-17. Not a typo. That was the halftime score. Things got away from the Shocks in the 3rd quarter as UCF outscored the Shocks 21-6 to take a 38-25 lead heading into the final quarter. Things did not go any better for the Shocks in the 4th quarter as UCF finished of a 43-16 second half to close out a 60-35 win.

I did not watch the game but I see HCKA picked up a technical foul with about a minute left in the game so obviously not a happy camper.

The Shockers turned it over 31 times although UCF also turned it over 24 times in what sounds like a very ugly game. Nug Bosch-Duran was overwhelmed and had 9 turnovers, Mariah McCully with 6, Asia Strong 5, and Seraphine Bastin had 4.. Asia Strong was the only Shocker in double figures with 12 points on 5-11 shooting. No other Shocker had more than 5 points.

In their previous game UCF held 2nd place USF to 33 points in a 54-33 win. IIRC, UCF plays a match-up 3-2 zone pretty much exclusively. Whether that was the case tonight against the Shocks I don't know.

The Lady Shocks are at Memphis this afternoon at 2:00. Memphis defeated the Shocks 50-49 in Wichita in a game where both teams struggled on offense.

Memphis seems to be up and down offensively. They lost at ECU last Sunday 38-68 then beat SMU 72-54 this past Wednesday.

Other than the ECU game Memphis does appear to be playing a liitle better over their past 6 games while going 3-3.

I'm thinking this game will boil down to which Shocker team and which Tiger team shows up today.

Not watching the game live but did just check in on the live stats. Memphis leading at the half 28-25. Sounds like a similar game to what the teams played in Wichita. Both teams shooting in the low 30% area and are a combined 1-15 on three pointers.

Both teams pick it up offensively in the 3rd quarter but the Shocks had the better of it winning the quarter 23-17 take a 48-45 lead heading into the final quarter. McCully, Colbert and Bremaud with 20 of the Shocks 23 points in the 3rd quarter.

With the game tied at 56-all Asia scored in the paint, and then scored on layup off of a Memphis turnover, then Mariah scored off of a layup off of another Memphis turnover and the Shocks found themselves up 62-56 with a minute to play. Seraphine then hits 4 straight free throws to put the Shocks up 10 at 66-56 which pretty much seals the win for the Shocks. Final: WSU 68 - Mem[his 61.

Both teams ended shooting in the low 40's but the Shocks hit 14-17 free throws including to meaningless late misses by Jane Asinde while Memphis only managed to make 12 of their 21 free throw attempts. Memphis turned the ball over 20 times to only 11 for the Shocks.

Mariah led the way with 23 points and Asia added 17 points with each grabbing 5 rebound while each playing 36 minutes. Mariah also had 4 assists and 3 steals. Trajata added 10 points and 7 rebounds in 21 minutes while Sefaphine contributed 6 points, 6 rebounds, 9 assists (with only 1 turnover) and 2 steals.

The UCF women have held its last 4 AAC opponents to 44 (Houston), 33 (2nd place USF), 35 (Wichita State) and 31 (4th place Temple). UCF more than doubled up Temple today beating them 68-31.

The Shocks finished up a 3-game road trip on Tuesday evening taking on the 2nd place USF Bulls in Tampa. USF is the defending AAC champions and are somewhat similar to 1st place UCF in that they rely on their defense as much or more than their offense to wins games. However, they are quite up to UCF's capabilities on either side of the ball.

The Shocks fell behind by 8 at the half trailing 30-22. USF extended their lead to 11 at 37-26 two and a half minutes into the 3rd quarter. At that point the Shocks picked up the pace and outscored USF 14-5 over the final 7 minutes of the quarter to pull to within 2 at 40-42.

The Shocks took their 1st lead of the 2nd half at 47-46 with 6 minutes to play. The teams traded baskets and leads with USF leading 55-54 with 1:43 to play. USF picked up a free throw to go up by 2 with 56 seconds to play and then hit a 3 pointer (a forced 30+ footer with the shot clock expiring) with 14 seconds to play to go up by 5 at 59-54. Carla Bremaud hit a 3 with 9 seconds to play to make it 59-57 but USF got a break away layup against the Shockers press to close out a 61-57 win.

The Shocks had a 54-52 lead with 3 minutes to play after a Mariah McCully three-pointer. After that the Shocks only other points came on Carla's trey with 9 seconds to play. During those final 3 minutes the Shocks. The Shocks were 1-7 from the field in the final 3 minutes.

Mariah McCully, who is finish of her final year as a Shocker with a flourish, led the Shocks with 21 points plus 3 steals. Jane Asinde had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Seraphine Bastin chipped in 9 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 stills. Seraphine is a fantastic rebounder for her size and position. The Shocks only managed 8 assists on 22 baskets vs 16 turnovers. Seraphine (4) and Mariah (3) had 7 of the Shocks 8 assists. USF had 15 assists on 23 baskets vs 18 turnovers. The rebounding was even at 37 each.

The cold spell over the final 3 minutes did the Shocks in. On small bit of good news is the DJ McCarty saw her first game time in a month after an ankle injury. She only played 4 minutes but looked like she was moving okay.

This game was a make-up game from a game postponed on January 9th. The Shocks and South Florida will be back in Wichita on Thursday for the previously scheduled game at Koch Arena. The Shocks are playing better and they are capable of beating USF despite the disparity in records.

Nice article by Paul Suellentrop on the Shockers lone senior (whose has no eligibility left after this season). Kudos to Mariah for getting that degree and Kudos to HCKA, Mariah's parents and the WSU academic support folks who did not give up on Mariah and continued to push her.

It will be a challenge to replace Mariah's skill and productivity on the basketball court next year. One of the better, if not the best, Juco transfers to play for the Shocks.
